Anybody Still Running XP?

Apparently so.  This from 2015 says about 250 million users.

https://redmondmag.com/articles/2015/04/08/windows-xp-usage.aspx

This from 2016 says about 11% of current windows users.

https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2016/04/11/millions-of-people-are-still-running-windows-xp/

But the microsoft push of win 10 is reduced the percentages of both win xp and win 7. The diminishing use of win 7 correlates very closely with the increasing use of win 10.

http://gs.statcounter.com/#os-ww-monthly-201503-201603

A quick Startpage search shows tons of writeups, mostly in two camps.  One camp says XP'ers are living on borrowed time, Luddites or dinosaurs with diminished IQ's; the other says that the first are flibbertigibbets, spreading FUD or stumping for microsoft.

The predictions of catastrophic consequences have yet to materialize.

I call XP "The Little OS That Could"  :)  Others might disagree.

The CCleaner SLIM version is always released a bit after any new version; when it is it will be HERE :-)

I still use it.

If I needed a different OS I would seriously try out Linux before ever "upgrading" to Win10 - I do not like Win10 at all and I don't see that ever changing.

Same.

I have spent literally days figuring out how to keep win 7 from becoming win 10.

It does that every full moon, you know.

I have this huge list of updates which must be hidden.  It is just about complete now, and there are third party softwares that may ?? automate the process, so in the next week or so i may fire up the win 7 desktop, image it, and begin the update battle.

I'm gettin too old for this.  :(

I love XP :) It just does what I tell it to do.

I also like Win 7 and 10 :)

I don't really hide anything on my Win 7 machine, I just won't upgrade that one so I just keep saying no, and don't do optional updates.

XP was a one off, I doubt there will be another Windows OS like it that you could use and it didn't use you :)

My 92 year old in-laws still use their old XP machine.  They are beginning to forget things they used to know how to do on it.  I maintain the machine remotely.  There is no way I would/could expect these two elderly people to learn a new OS.

Both my PCs are Win7 and I'm leaving them there, declining all the Win10 optional updates.  I like Win7.

- According to my (reliable ???) information, Microsoft has removed all related XP software, including all those hundreds of updates. Can anyone confirm this ?

- It's a REAL pity XP isn't supported anymore. I hate I must do without my XP laptop, which I used for so many years. (Sob, sob, ............... ).

Usually Microsoft doesn't kill off all the old updates to unsupported OSes.

People are too quick to throw old OSes under the bus because of what Microsoft states or so-called "security experts." A very old OS such as even Win98 can make a very good offline computer for very basic stuff, such as really old video games that newer OSes can't seem to play anymore, and even use one just as a big glorified MP3 player.

I too still have and still occasionaly use a Win98 PC, mainly because it has Autocad 2000i installed (The full version of Autocad is not cheap and that old version still does everything I need).

Looking through my old CD's recently I found one from 1995, the old game 'Lemmings'.

I remember enjoying that game so just for fun I stuck it into my Windows 10 laptop to see what would happen; to my surprise it works perfectly, not bad for a 20 year old game.

I am 99.99% sure xp will still download updates for a new installation.

That is not 100% because I have not done it in a long time, but i have done it since support stopped.

Might try it myself soon eventually if time permits.

I bet Tasgandy would already know . . . ??

FYI:  Two days ago I manually downloaded and ran the Malicious Software Removal Tool on this xp desktop, just to see it it would work.  I had read where someone said it was no longer possible for xp, but it worked OK.

Also, last year this xp machine began to have problems shutting down, removing USB drives, and starting Powershadow.

To make a long story short, the problem stopped when I turned off windows update as trium described.

There are 2 topics about it on this forum.

Supposedly they'll offer that tool for a bit longer on XP - not that I rely upon it though, I've never liked it, and I have other anti-malware that gets updated daily.

Oh yeah that version you got two days ago should be updated again today to the April 2016 version.
