LuLu
Has anyone ever used this site? Is it safe to download the programs they offer? I'm here. What are your other two wishes?
Moderators hazelnut Posted July 11, 2010 Moderators Share Posted July 11, 2010 It a good idea to read the comments on each days download. To do this just click on 'proceed to download page'' and then scroll down the page to the comments. It's usually a good indicator of what the software is like that day. Registering and installing the days product is okay as long as you follow the instructions given and read any install tips in the comments section. I have had one or two things from there, a lot not great but now and again a good one comes along. The last one I got from there was Inpaint http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=26093&st=0&p=157623&hl=inpaint&fromsearch=1entry157623 Support contact https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general or support@ccleaner.com
Moderators Andavari Posted July 11, 2010 Moderators Share Posted July 11, 2010 I used to visit there and try some of the stuff but honestly I've never kept any of it installed all that long. Also if you format your computer that "giveaway" is gone for good unless they run it again! So if you download something from there you can't live without you'd better image your hard disk with something like Macrium Reflect Free Edition, etc., so it can be fully restored along with Windows if your computer needs restoring. Aethec
I think too many giveaways are for useless software, or yet another video converter nobody has ever heard of. Piriform French translator
Moderators Nergal Posted July 12, 2010 Moderators Share Posted July 12, 2010 while I follow GOTD via RSS, i too rarely find anything I want so far I've only kept 3-4 softwares at most ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF. Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark) ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T. JDPower
I've followed it via it's RSS feed for years now. Does have the occasional decent program but I'd say were probably talking 20 or 30 duffers for every decent one. Also if you format your computer that "giveaway" is gone for good unless they run it again! Unless of course you track the install and make note of the reg key storing the software registration entry and export it for reinstall (admittedly doesn't work with all programs)
Ishi
So if you download something from there you can't live without you'd better image your hard disk with something like Macrium Reflect Free Edition, etc., so it can be fully restored along with Windows if your computer needs restoring. Wow.. you have become a patron of Macrium, Andavari.... you are the leading guy who patronizes it here, come on there are other recovery tools out there. And hey, guys, before trying any one of these "giveaway" apps, make a restore point or make sure you have backup copies of your important files somewhere where they can be re-obtained. I love computer maintenance tasks. Some of my favorite programs: Wordpad -basic word processing Notepad - temporary clipboard and basic scripting module Windows Media Player 12- video, music and online radio player Windows Media Center - live TV, local FM radio CCleaner- handy computer maintenance tool If something fails to work after using the registry cleaner, use SYSTEM RESTORE. Since I'm "patronizing" a freeware program it's no foul, if you don't like it don't read my posts - it's literally that dead simple. Obviously there are other recovery tools out there, I'm just stating one that I use myself and that works.
Moderators hazelnut Posted July 12, 2010 Moderators Share Posted July 12, 2010 Thank goodness someone keeps mentioning about backup programs and images. If it encourages people to use them then it's worth the effort. Moderators Nergal Posted July 12, 2010 Moderators Share Posted July 12, 2010 Backup and Recovery are the ones I get mostly. I don't find any conflict of interest in the moderator (or any one here) have many programs that "do the same thing" as Recuva. As we all know Recuva can get somethings and not others, the same is true for Macrium; of the recovery programs I have Multistage Recovery 4, icare format recovery EASEUS Data recovery wizard(all three of which I got from GOTD), Disk Digger, restoration MFC application, and Recuva, it is the last (from our dear Piriform software) that I use first and most but that doesn't negate the need for the others at times. JDPower
Speaking of Inpaint, version 2.4 is being offered today at Giveaway of the Day.. I've got a couple of versions old version of that they gave away a while back and a nice little program (one of the few keepers I've had from GAOTD). Last version (also given away on GAOTD) was a backwards step IMO in usability terms so will certainly give this version a try out
