Also, behavioural analysis engines can get a bit suspicious of a tool that wants to change registry entries, delete files, etc, etc - which is all, of course, intended behaviour for a cleaner.

Different approach and different philosophical underpinnings, but with a similar outcome for the user.

For this reason, we strongly recommend against using old CCleaner versions prior to 5.46 on Windows 10. Indeed, Microsoft has already disabled older versions of CCleaner (prior to version 5.35) with Windows 10 updates, and is expected to extend this up to CCleaner 5.45 at some point in the future, requiring users to upgrade their CCleaner to a "safe" version.

As Augeas mentioned previously, Recuva will faithfully recover what is there - but alas cannot recover what has already been overwritten. Historically I found that WordPad would let me at least retrieve most of the text from partially recovered DOC files, for example. In the Adobe forums, staff have previously recommended the third party PDF Repair Toolbox to repair damaged or corrupted PDF files (that are not password-protected or encrypted) to the point where they can at least be opened. I have had no personal experience with this tool and cannot comment if it merely fixes corrupted headers or will also allow files with partially wiped content to also be opened.

This is not actually a thing. Blocking CCleaner from talking to the internet only helps users who are trying to install pirated keygen serial keys and makes no difference to anyone else. That said, rolling back to the version that you initially bought and declining to update to any version released after your period of included updates expired is an admirable adherence to the principle of version-based purchasing. If you are on Windows 7 you can go forward as far as CCleaner version 5.42 and shouldn't receive any additional notifications that your service component has expired. Note, however, that CCleaner versions prior to version 5.46 are not recommended for users on Windows 10. Customer support only covers the latest version, but if your support has expired then this should not be an issue either way.

From your description it sounds like you missed the installation offer screen - which has been there in one form or another since 2010. Although we do get reports of customers telling us that they did not see an offer screen, this is usually because no offer was made. Reports of installer errors where no offer appears but an offered installation still occurs are extremely rare - if this happened to you it would be a bug, and your assistance would be appreciated in helping us diagnose what happened to prevent it happening in the future.
