  1. Thanks for the report. I hadn't looked at it before but just gave it a go. On Windows 10 here it found 8 out of 10 files (sounds like a commercial) to delete in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates\Backup" But as you say running a clean did not actually delete any of them. If I try to delete one maunally in File Explorer it asks for elevated 'System' permission to delete it. (I am already admin). I've flagged it up to the staff for the developers to look at.
  2. They are fine here, (2 different computers, one CCleaner Pro one CCleaner Free). It looks like yours is trying to display 2 different icons side by side and of course the column is only meant for one icon so you are seeing half of each. eg. half of the the Thunderbird icon and half of the Internet icon; half of the Chrome icon and half of the Applications icon. I'm not sure what the one with Firefox is? That's an odd one. What do the Internet and Applications icons look like in your CCleaner? Is the Windows Tab also showing double icons or is it just the Applications tab? To rule out it being a Windows glitch I'd do a 'Restart' (not Shutdown) of Windows to see if your Windows icon cache needs a refresh. If a Restart doesn't fix it then you can delete the icon cache files and Windows will then rebuild them: https://www.makeuseof.com/windows-rebuild-icon-cache/ Let us know if that doesn't put it right.
  3. I think that all us old timers know that one. I have this laptop set to hibernate when I close the lid so it restarts very quickly, it does mean that when I boot my other laptop from shut down it feels like it's taking an age to start.
  4. Please note that only Piriform Staff are permitted to use the CCleaner logo as their avatar. In fact they have to use it to show that they are staff members. The use of 'CCleaner' in the username is also restricted to staff members. These restrictions are stated at paragraph 3 in the forum guidelines which can be found in the menu bar above the forum. https://community.ccleaner.com/guidelines/ On this ocassion - Please feel free to re-register with a new username that does not breach the guidelines.
  5. Good to hear that it's working for you now. So the problem was a disc error/fault preventing Windows defrag from reading the disc, and the Disc Error check has fixed it. TBH I had thought that you might have replied that you'd already run CHKDSK when doing SFC and DISM. Hopefully fixing a disc error will have also improved your startup speed. Sometimes it's better to give a list of things to check all at once rather than one at once which takes longer as posts go back and forth. Your answers are good, not much at startup, plenty of disc space, you don't say what the PUP was but fair enough if it was unwanted. Something to note is that using more than one defragmenter isn't going to improve defragmentation. Every one of them uses their own algorithm, there's no set standard, so will just reorder things as it wants regardless of what the one before did. You could spend hours defragmenting and ordering the files one way with one app, and then another way with another app, and then ....., PS. I know what you mean about the removal of the drive map from Windows Optimize and Defrag, watching a defragmenter drive map is a bit like watching someone play Tetris and you can still watch it in Defraggler and others. But it doesn't really have any function it's just a pretty graphic and maybe reassurance that something is happening. But for all you know the app could just be moving coloured brocks round and not even touching your drive It also gives it's own issue of people trying to get their drives 'perfect' - everything in a solid block at the start and nothing fragmented. It's a Holy Grail, only going to happen on an external drive not on a system drive, But that doesn't stop people trying and then complaining about the defragmenter when they can't achieve what can't be achieved. (Well maybe very very rarely). Probably that's one of the reasons why Microsoft removed it. PPS. I must have saved hours since I switched both my laptops internal drives to SSD's. No defragging of those just a trim which takes seconds. Of course I still have the old spinners as external drives, so still Defraggler for those.
  6. The CCleaner user interface is written in English, so it doesn't need a seperate .dll for English. Just go to Options>Settings and change the language to English.
  7. All I can say at this moment is that both Windows defragmenter and Defraggler work fine here, I can launch and run either one as I choose. Uninstalling my Defraggler does not affect Windows defrag in the slightest. Neither does reinstalling it. You seem to have 2 seperate isssues here, the slowish startup, and then the Windows defragmenter not launching. They are probably not related, but might be. 3 minutes for startup can seem a long time these days, but even only 5 years ago was often considered reasonable. "Why is my computer slow to start" is one of the top questions asked online, and that's because there can be a multitude of reasons. From a simple setting, through to too much bloat loading, system or hardware problems, up to even malware. Have you had a look at just what is strating when you startup? For example do you maybe have Edge pre-loading, even though you may never use it? What about other background apps and bloatware? I'd suggest running AdwCleaner from Malwarebytes to start with, it can quickly get rid of that junk/bloatware, adware, etc. https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner In windows Settings go to Apps>Startup and see what is turned on there that could be slowing things. If you have things that you don't use turned on then turn them off. You could then also look at Tools>Startup in CCleaner to see just what else is loading at startup, there are 4 tabs there. You can also disable and enable them there if you are sure that you don't want them running at startup. (Don't use 'Delete' all it does is remove them from that list it doesn't delete them). Next to the defragmenter. As Hazelnut asked what type of drive is it? What size is it? How full is it? Right-clicking the drive in File Explorer and selecting Properties will tell you the Capacity and the used/free space on the General tab, the Hardware tab will give you the model number of the drive from which we should be able to tell what type it is. While you are in the Properties go to the Tools tab and see if the defragmenter will launch from there. (And maybe run the Error checker too, it can take a while depending on the size of the disc, but would rule out another potential cause of problems). You said that you were not happy with the Windows Defragmenter for various reasons, can you expand on those reasons just it case they might be relevant here? Step by step, do you normally launch the Windows defragmenter? You mentioned from File Explorer above? What do you see when it fails to load? And finally for now, have you tried booting into safe mode and seeing if it runs there?
  8. Mmm, next time before you clean do an Analyze and if it skips Zoom then before cleaning look in Task Manager and see if there is anything Zoom related still running. Although I do have Zoom on this machine I've only ever used it once, to attend a funeral service remotely, so I'm not very clued up on what kinds of processes it runs. One thought though, are you logging in with a Zoom account or are you using your Google or Facebook account to log in to it?
  9. My Speccy reopens as I last left it, but I have had the problem with other apps. (My Malwarebytes used to be a #### for it and was often half off the screen). It can be pretty common, and annoying, often it's only one or two apps who's windows get affected and the rest open as you want. No one seems to know just what causes it, but it seems like the position/size parameters that Windows should save when you close an apps window get scrambled in an odd way and it can't fix it without help. Windows sometimes just needs a shake to help it, so try the following: Get the Speccy window to the size and position that you want then click the Maximize/restore button a few times. (Maybe throw in a couple of minimize/restores as well for good measure?) Then close Speccy and see if it now reopens as you want it. Another similar option I've read is once you have the window as you want it double-click the logo at the top left (in this case the Speccy logo). The window should close, but Windows should now remember where/how you want it to open. (With that one it seems to be that closing the window in that different way is what gives Windows a poke and does the trick). If it's still not working then the 'FancyZones' utility in Microsoft PowerToys should do what you want by snapping/restricting Speccy's window to a custom zone. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/ https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/fancyzones (That's probably a good utility to have for a dual monitor setup anyway). Or you could use a 3rd party window resizer such as: http://www.southbaypc.com/AutoSizer/
  10. Just to note that when you choose to install CCleaner at a custom location, it will create a new 'CCleaner' folder at that location if needed. So say you browsed to something like 'F:\my_installs' then the installer would create 'F:\my_installs\CCleaner' to install the CCleaner files into. (But if you had already created a 'F:\my_installs\CCleaner' folder yourself to install to, and browse to that, then it's smart enough not to create another one inside that).
  11. Is it saying that Zoom has been Skipped? When an item is 'Skipped' in Custom Clean it's generally because it has files open, CCleaner needs apps/files to be closed so that it can clean them. Sometimes when you think an app has been closed it will still be running in the background. And sometimes that can be simply because it's taking a while to fully close, and you are trying to clean before it has finished closing. So it may simply be that your Zoom is taking a while to fully close for some reason (maybe there is even still an open connection until disconnected at the other end?), then once it has closed CCleaner can clean it By default when an app is open and so preventing cleaning Custom Clean will show you this message asking if you want to close the open app: but if at any time you have ticked "Do not show me this message again" when you get that message for an open app then in future, if it's open again, CCleaner will just Skip the cleaning of that particular open app without asking. eg. Here I had both Firefox and Zoom open when I ran a clean, and as you can see both have been Skipped: Once I closed Zoom then CCleaner could clean it (but Firefox was still open so was still skipped):
  12. Use the Advanced options in the installer: Click through to this screen and set your required location:
  13. Slow starting and apps unable to launch sounds like you have a Windows System issue. (not something that defragmenting files would cause). Have you run sfc /scannow to check and repair the System files? If you have and sfc hasn't worked to fix your issues then run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. (And then sfc /scannow again). See this for how to run those commands to repair your Windows System files: https://www.howtogeek.com/222532/how-to-repair-corrupted-windows-system-files-with-the-sfc-and-dism-commands/

  15. OK you have a storage full issue. TBH it probably means that you need a bigger Hard Drive, or a second hard drive But let's see what can be done before that. The first thing to say is untick 'System Files' in Duplicate Finder. The system often needs certain files to be duplicated to work properly, if you delete those system duplicates then if you are lucky Windows will put them straight back. Following on from that, have a read of the second part of this about files that come back after cleaning: Personally though I think that you just don't have enough free space left on your storage drive(s), so whatever you clean and get back to free space will just quickly fill up again. Can you tell us how much free space you have on your drive(s)? In File Explorer right-click on the drive and select 'Properties' to see how much is used and how much still free.
  16. I guess that it was the 'Recent Files' list then. Good to hear it's now as you want it. Just for general info: Health Check doesn't clear the Wordpad recents list, Custom Clean will clear it if you have it ticked there.
  17. Please give more details. Is it finding any drivers to update? If it is finding some to update then what is happening when you try to update them? What Windows version are you using? What antivirus are you using if not Windows Defender?
  18. Just a quick test, but it always defaults to "Documents" on opening, regardless of where it had last opened from or saved to the last time you closed it.
  19. Wordpad is a single document application, you can only have one document open at once in Wordpad. You save Wordpad documents if you want to keep them, if you haven't saved then when you close wordpad it asks if you want to save your work. If you close it without saving then the work is lost. So where are you saving your recipe, etc. files to that they are dissapearing from? CCleaner wouldn't normally remove wordpad files unless they are saved in a location where they shouldn't really be saved. Or do you mean something else, and not files dissapearing?
  20. I did some testing, but I cannot replicate your issue here. I installed an old version of Irfanview, and the previous version of Recuva Software Updater was then showing me Zoom, Irfanview, and Recuva as having updates available. I unticked Zoom and Irfanview, leaving just Recuva ticked. (The button changes from 'Update all' to just 'Update'). I clicked Update and only Recuva was updated. Close and reopen CCleaner, back to Software Updater. I unticked Zoom, leaving just Irfanview ticked, I clicked Update and only Irfanview was updated. To finish I ticked Zoom, clicked Update (it was 'Update All' as Zoom was now the only one left) and it updated without problem. So all behaved for me as it should do. Your situation does seem odd though, you say that: I can understand if Software Updater is not able to update something because of connection or permission issues. But it shouldn't try to update things that are unticked. Unless I am misunderstanding what you are saying? Is it actually trying to update the unticked softwares? or is it only trying to update one or more others that you still have ticked?
  21. Ah, so it is Software Updater that you are using and not Health Check. That '60 days' would have been v6.09 (February) when 50 more softwares were added to what it can update. https://www.ccleaner.com/knowledge/ccleaner-v6-09-10300 I know what you mean about ignore, but I'd guess that unticking it, or not running Software Updater at all, would be considered the ignore option. Are you saying that as well as unticking those 5 there are others that you do want to update, and so you are clicking on the 'Update' button? And then it tries to update even the unticked ones too? I only have Zoom of those on your list, and it is showing an available update here. I might see later if I can roll something else back and do some testing with the ticks/unticks in Software Updater.
  22. That's a generic message that you still see in some parts of CCleaner, and it's inaccurate. It doesn't actually mean that you are 'not connected' but simply that a connection to the target server could not be made for whatever reason. Being offline is only one of the possible reasons. It's also possible that the server itself is down, or it could possibly be that your AV/Firewall is blocking that particular connection. They have changed that generic message in various places in CCleaner to say that it's a particular server that can't be contacted, but they haven't changed them all yet. For example they have changed it in the Health Check software updater, but not in the stand alone Software Updater yet:
  23. I assume that you are talking about Health Check which in the Pro version automatically runs a software update check. (There's also a seperate Software Updater in Tools, if you don't touch it won't run). I'm not sure just which boxes you are unticking? If Health Check Pro automatically finds software to be updated then you have to click on 'Security' in the scan results and untick the boxes there if you don't want any update that has been found. And yes, occasionally a software update will hang if it needs an extra input from the user which Health Check can't give it. The most common one is if you are not running CCleaner in a Windows Administrator account and so Windows asks for extra permission to install the update which CCleaner can't give it. The simple solution is to use Custom Clean and not Health Check. Custom Clean does not do an automatic software update, so it won't bother you unless you run Health Check Pro or the Software Updater in Tools. To set Custom Clean as the default that CCleaner shows you change Options>Settings>CCleaner Home Screen PS. What software is it that CCleaner is trying to update for you? If we know that then someone can double check that there isn't a problem with the update itself.
  24. Fair enough, and good that there is no issue there. It was worth checking from what you described with Windows startup hanging if the external drives are connected. That hanging on startup usually indicates an issue with the computers Boot configuration, (or possibly with the drive itself, or maybe with certain files in the drives root directory). This explains more, be aware that the 2 main checks/fixes involve accessing the BIOS/UEFI and making changes in there. https://helpdeskgeek.com/help-desk/unable-to-boot-windows-with-external-hard-drive-attached/ That doesn't realy explain though why CCleaner would also hang but only if/when the external drive is connected, although I suspect that's just a symptom of a wider issue? As far as I know the only thing that CCleaner would normally access to clean on an external drive is the Recycle bin on the drive. And even a corrupted recycle bin doesn't prevent Windows from booting. For the CCleaner the next thing I would try is, with the external drive connected, run Custom Clean rather than Health Check. Do an Analyze first, if that completes then 'Run CCleaner'. If Custom Clean also freezes then it should say at the top of the results window what it was scanning/cleaning when it froze. That information could help point to where the issue lies. You could also try the Windows built in Disc Clean-up, being sure to select the external drive to clean. If CCleaner is getting stuck on clearing a particular file then Disc Clean-up can often delete that file and clear the blockage. Then try Health Check again. However as I say i think that it's a wider issue and not CCleaner itself. Of course it could also be 2 seperate issues that just happen to look similar because each only happens if/when a drive is connected by USB. PS Is there anything out of the ordinary about the external drives?
