To verify the Empty Recycle Bin status, click on the Cleaner icon (not the Options icon) on the left side of the CCleaner window. Make sure the Windows tab is selected. Scroll down to the System group (category). Empty Recycle Bin should be the first checkbox in the list.
I have one little-used Yahoo account and my in-laws still actively use their very old Yahoo account. I changed passwords on both yesterday, just to be sure. Made them longer and used random characters.
The change is explained on the mvps website: http://msmvps.com/blogs/hostsnews/archive/2013/12/06/1872125.aspx

My Dad (God rest his soul) would laugh to tears when he heard this song at Christmas. Our family is Swedish which may have something to do with it. Merry Christmas, Dad!
(sorry if I broke a serious mood)
I should have mentioned that this was on the Win7 laptop. Anyway, running it as Admin fixed the problem (oops). I was able to download & replace the file with no issue, ignoring the DNS warning. Thanks, Nergal for pointing me in the right direction.
Thanks for the heads-up.
I've used the mvps hosts file for several years. A couple months ago I installed HostsXpert but continued updating the hosts file manually. Today, I tried to use the update function of HostsXpert to get the update, but it didn't work. I get a couple messages, but always end up with "HostsXpert Cannot connect to the website."
Before that I also get a message about the DNSClient Service is running, but I just clicked on OK to proceed.
Has anyone else used HostsXpert to successfully update the mvps hosts file?
Me--> also arms, eyes, toes...
Whatever caused the problem, the result seemed to have mainly affected IE8. The other symptoms were a result of IE8 becoming flummoxed. Bizarre.
Ran a full Norton scan this morning - 0 problems found. Turned the PC back over to my wife for her to use. Watch & wait. Going to hold off installing any pending software updates (FF, MS Critical, Adobe Flash, Defraggler, Speccy, etc.).
Ran full scans of MBAM and SAS last night - 0 problems found.
The system seemed to boot normally this morning. I'm running a full Norton scan right now. So far, so good.
