  1. Wow. Seems like winamp has been around forever. Shame.
  2. Yeah, exactly. My wife will let me know the minute something goes screwy. She uses it primarily, I'm just her tech support. She was trying to follow a link in an email and nothing happened. That's what first made us aware there was a problem.
  3. I'll certainly keep your suggestions in mind. After finishing the image restore, I booted into WinXP and the first & only thing I did was to set another chkdsk to run and rebooted. The chkdsk ran with these results: Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. A disk check has been scheduled. Windows will now check the disk. Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive. Cleaning up 2364 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9. Cleaning up 2364 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9. Cleaning up 2364 unused security descriptors. CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal... Usn Journal verification completed. CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap. Windows has finished checking your disk. Please wait while your computer restarts. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. The system appears to be back to normal: 1. IE8 starts & runs normally. 2. The Internet Options icon is back in Control Panel and functions. 3. Right-clicking on the IE Desktop icon brings up the expected context menu and it functions. 4. Clicking on a webpage link in an email opens the webpage in a new tab in FF (my default browser). 5. Malwarebytes now loads & runs. Restoring a 2-week old image put back some older program versions which I am going to leave alone for the time being: FF v24.0, Defraggler v2.15 & Speccy v1.23 plus the last group of MS critical updates. I'm going to attempt to just use the system as normal to see if it holds up.
  4. For fun, I booted into Safe Mode. IE8 still doesn't start. Right-clicking on the IE icon on the Desktop and selecting Properties does nothing. I opened Control Panel to select Internet Options and Internet Options is gone. I'm going to re-image now.
  5. I started a new topic here: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=39892
  6. This topic continues from my posts here: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=39841 Does the same thing happen if you start in safe mode - I didn't start in Safe Mode before restoring the image. Have you tried running SFC - Yes, I ran SFC /scannow. I inserted the Win CD, had to click on Retry many times, but it went to completion with no errors displayed. ''I think I know what I did'' - I started Defraggler v2.15, did an Analyze & started a File Defrag. The program crashed, first time I had ever seen Defraggler crash, and it displayed a popup window asking if I wanted to send information to Piriform - I clicked yes. Knowing this was an older version, I updated to the current version, 2.16, updated Speccy to version 1.24 and updated another program (not Piriform). I then ran the new Defraggler (File Defrag) which ran to completion. I use FF (25.0.1) as my default browser, but of course, IE8 is also installed. The first problem I noticed is that if I click on a web link in an email, the web page would no longer open in FF. I rarely use IE8 but when I tried to start it, I found it would not start (no error msg). I right-clicked on the IE shortcut on the Desktop and selected Properties to look at the Option settings - nothing happened. I went into Control Panel and tried to start Internet Options from there - nothing happened. It was at this point yesterday, that I re-imaged the drive (Seagate). I again updated Defraggler, Speccy and the other program. Everything seemed fine to the point where I powered it off last night. Then, this morning as I said, it took a very long time to boot up and my original problems are back. This morning, I scheduled a chkdsk and rebooted to let it run. This was the result: Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. A disk check has been scheduled. Windows will now check the disk. Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive. Cleaning up 2391 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9. Cleaning up 2391 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9. Cleaning up 2391 unused security descriptors. Windows has finished checking your disk. Please wait while your computer restarts. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft....link/events.asp. I just finished running the Seagate diagnostic program SeaTools. Both the short & long tests ran to completion without error. I am about to re-image the drive again back to an earlier date.
  7. It occurred to me, hazelnut, after my last post, that what started as a direct response to a post, I've turned into hijacking the OP's topic, which I didn't mean to do. Maybe I should start a new topic in the 'hardware' forum. What do you think?
  8. Well, this is weird. I restored the PC (WinXP desktop in my signature), no problem. The problems I was experiencing were gone and I used the PC for the rest of the day. I powered off the PC last night as usual. When I powered it up this morning, it took waaay longer to boot up (much HDD activity). When it finally came up, my same problems were back. I just ran a full virus scan (Norton) and it found no problems. Next I'm going to run MB & SAS to check for any malware. If that all comes back clean, I'll restore an older image. This is NOT what I had planned to do today. Futz time. Edit: One of the problems I am experiencing is that IE will no longer start. No errors, it just won't start. I just tried to start MB which was already installed and got this error: Run-time error '339': Component 'ieframe.dll' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid. Sounds to me like MB depends on IE and since there is something wrong with it, MB can't run. I may just have to restore the older image and start over. Grrr
  9. +1 The only problem I had was the Macrium Rescue disk wouldn't boot & I know I tested it after I created it in Aug. Since the PC wasn't totally dead, I was able to burn another one. That was scary.
  10. I've never trusted the Windows restore function. I make weekly disk images with Macrium and backup my user data files every day. My main desktop PC just went flaky this morning with several weird problems (I think I know what I did , and it wasn't the Registry). I decided to restore my last image and user data. Took a couple hours but I am back running without the bugs and lost no data. It was the shorter of trying to troubleshoot the several problems. Image... backup... image... backup... image... well, you get the point.
  11. Just tried it on my Win7 x64 laptop. Said there was 6.31GB to remove, so I did. I ran Cleanup again and there was still 2.04GB left. I ran it a 2nd time but the 2.04GB remains!?! Maybe by stating it removes "old" updates, the "new" updates are intentionally left... until they become "old"
  12. Maybe my memory is fading, but I just don't remember having to reboot the PC after updating Speccy. Rebooting was not the 1st thing that popped into my mind, but it worked. I have a Win7 laptop and upgrading Speccy on that machine has never required a reboot to work properly. It must just be something unusual about that older technology AGP video card and/or WinXP. Now, if I can just remember this the next time I install a Speccy update.
  13. Well, [bleep]! Read some other topics on this problem & saw the magic word... REBOOT. With v1.20 still installed, I rebooted the PC & no more error. I installed v1.23 over the top, ran Speccy & got the error. I rebooted, ran Speccy v1.23 & didn't get the error!?! Never mind... apparently I don't have a problem. [sigh] Have a great Sunday!
  14. I just installed v1.23.569 on my WinXP Pro SP3 desktop and under the graphics section I get the message, "The specified service has been marked for deletion." The graphics card is an EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 6200 512MB AGP 8X. I went back to speccy v1.20.446 and it is reporting the same error. I upgraded to this video card July 30, and I think this is the 1st time I ran Speccy since the upgrade, so I didn't realize the error was being reported. The Speccy link in my signature for this PC will be with the previous video card which didn't have a problem with Speccy - XFX NVIDIA GeForce 6200 256MB AGP 8X Oops, that statement is wrong. That Speccy link DOES show the current video card reporting correctly with Speccy v1.22.536. The only changes to this system would be MS updates. I am running the same NVIDIA driver version - 307.83 - http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-307.83-whql-driver.html which is the latest version for this "old" product. Any idea how I should troubleshoot this?
  15. I can view the mac address on the Paper White. No problem there. That's how I got it in the first place to enter it in the router as an allowed device. But this is what happens after establishing a successful Wi-Fi connection: Put the Paper White in Airplane mode (turns off Wi-Fi) Turn off SSID broadcast in the router Take the Paper White out of Airplane mode (turns on Wi-Fi) The Paper white no longer sees my network and finds nothing to connect to Put the Paper White back in Airplane mode (turns off Wi-Fi) Turn on SSID broadcast in the router Take the Paper White out of Airplane mode (turns on Wi-Fi) The Paper White sees my Wi-Fi network and connects Because of the way the Paper White operates, I have to leave SSID broadcast enabled in my router.
  16. Wow, great link - thanks. I do have one old P3 machine that belongs to my in-laws that I maintain. I'm surprised the HDD hasn't quit yet. When it does, now I've got an option.
  17. I have much the same router setup as you, but with one difference. When I was setting up my wife's new Kindle Paper White, it would not connect unless I changed the option to broadcast the SSID, which I had turned off. It was a while ago, but if I remember correctly, when I tried to setup the Wi-Fi connection in the Paper White, there was no place to manually enter the SSID. It relied only on the networks it detected on it's own. Maybe there is a difference between the Kindle Tablet and the Paper White.
  18. Fat-fingered. I meant HostXpert.
  19. I may give that a try. I haven't had Homer installed long enough to play around with all it's options & features. The "video" I am trying to watch is live broadcasts, not a movie or stored video like on YouTube. There may only be a live broadcast once every few days, so it will take me awhile to actually try it. I'll have to wait for a live feed to be scheduled.
  20. No, I do not see an edit and new link to Homer. The only link I see is the one back to the older topic that you originally pointed me to. So, no, you are not "losing it."
  21. Thanks, Nergal. I'll check it out. EDIT: Installed Homer & ran it while loading the webpage with the video that won't play. 13 blocked sites! I don't go to that website often to watch videos so I'll just be happy with using HostsXpert to temporarily swap hosts files when needed. Thanks for the help guys!
  22. WOW! Reading the topic you linked to was about what I expected - a hassle to find the culprit. But, there were some good suggestions in there as well. The screenshot in Nergal's post #4 - what program did that come from? That looks like it will point to the possible culprits pretty quick.
  23. I went ahead & installed HostsXpert and I am trying to figure out the interface & functions. At least I can backup the current MVPS hosts file, restore the native Windows hosts file to watch videos, and then restore the MVPS backup. It's also easier to make the hosts file read only. Next, I'll be trying the Download & update MVPS hosts file the next time I see an update posted here.
  24. I've got a problem similar to Winapp2.ini as posted at the top of this page. I've been trying to go to http://www.nascar.com/presspass to watch their live news coverage and I found out today that MVPS is blocking the video. I put back the original HOSTS file during today's live broadcast & the video played. My question is - how do I find out which entry is blocking the video so I can comment it out? I get no error message, just a blank, black video window. Does HostsXpert have any provision to determine which HOSTS entry is blocking this video? I've never used HostsXpert but would consider installing it if it would pinpoint the entry doing the blocking. Thanks! Edit: I did find 4 entries with the word 'nascar' in them and commented them out, but it didn't work for being able to view the video.
  25. The folder/file structure of Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail (WLM) are different. I use Windows Live Mail but would consider using CCleaner to empty my "Deleted" box a little risky, if I got it wrong. The folder structure may also be different depending on the OS you are using. I am running WLM on WinXP Pro SP3. I have always used WLM's own option setting to empty the "Deleted" folder every time I close WLM. Tools-->Options-->Advanced tab-->Maintenance button and check the first box labeled Empty messages from the 'Deleted Items' folder on exit.
