  1. Although if they actually are dead links there's not much point keeping them (unless you are reinstalling something that the shortcuts are needed for)
  2. After you run the cleaner does analyze show anything left to be cleaned? It may have just analyzed incorrectly. If there is a significant amount uncleaned try runnng it in safe mode - keep tapping F8 when you turn on the PC and you will get a menu where you can select safe mode, use the arrow keys to select 'Safe mode', then press enter and the PC will boot in safe mode then just run CCleaner as usual That is just the same as the 'Add/Remove programs' list with a few important extra programs that Windows hides to protect them. Its just an added extra to CCleaner, not something that has to be cleaned. (And I can't see anything in that list to worry about ). PS: Check the beginners guide if you need further info: CCleaner Beginners Guide

    Restore

Thats certainly enough room for restore points. Are you running low on hard drive space? Have you run virus and malware scans? Also it may be worth turning off system restore, rebooting and turning system restore back on as this apparently sometimes fixes restore problems (you will lose all your current restore points by doing this but one will be created when you turn restore back on). A quick Google also found that some anti-virus software deletes old restore points, though I think that's unlikely it may be worth checking Just some suggestions

    Restore

CCleaner doesn't touch system restore points. Have you reduced the amount of disk space to use for system restore (in Start>Control Panel>System>System Restore), if you have made that too small it will only allow one or two restore points. Perhaps check there anyway and make sure it is set to at least 1000MB.
  5. Perhaps ask what version they are using, then if they tell you an old version you can take great pleasure in pointing this out
  6. Have you tried a system restore point? As far as I know CCleaner doesn't touch anything that could have caused this, did you use anything else around the same time?
  7. Are you saying that just opening add/remove causes this, you'r not actually removing any programs? I've just done as you said a few times and it doesn't happen here. Perhaps help by letting us know what version of CCleaner and what Windows version you're using
  8. Correct, its Control Panel>Java, click the update tab, tick the 'Check for updates automatically' click ok and you're done. Personally I have no problems NOT having it checking for updates, as soon as I visit a site that needs a newer version it soon lets me know then I update it (plus its one less unnecessary thing running at startup).
  9. I notice all the affected icons are web links. What happens when you click on them, do they open your browser and go to the page as they should? Does Real Player open? Also, I'm not famliar with Windows ME so this may be useless but can you right click them and select 'Open with', then 'Choose program'. If so do that then select your browser and tick the box to 'Always use the selected program'. (Apologies if this isn't possible in Windows ME)
  10. What browser are you using? Have you tried downloading with a different browser? (Long shot I know but may be relevant)
  11. LOL, I resisted the comment. I knew someone else would come along with one though

    Ver 1.33.382

Personally I would uninstall the standard version first to remove the additional language files (the slim version only has english). Also she may have installed the Yahoo toolbar which comes with the standard CCleaner install, if so (and she has no use for it) you could uninstall that too (Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs). Either way if you are just trying to save space the difference in size between the builds is so small it's really not worth worrying about. Mine is 1.31Mb too
  13. Stick to the second alternative (Firefox). Don't install a crappy toolbar
  14. Also, as this is related to Nortons protected recycle bin, I would suggest trying unticking the 'Empty Recycle Bin' under the Windows tab of CCleaner (though I have no knowledge of this particular Norton function)
  15. Thats not right. This has been suggested a few times before and different progress bars have been suggested, Fire... is right though, it would take twice as long as it would have to analyse how much there is to remove before scanning. There have been some alternatives suggested though which may or may not implemented. Check this topic for more: http://forum.CCleaner.com/index.php?showto...hl=progress+bar
  16. Extensions I use that haven't already been mentioned are: Shazou: Find the server location of any website you're browsing. Toolbar Control: Allows greater control and configuration of toolbars. Open Selected Links: Highlight several links and open them all at once from the right click context menu. Session Manager: Saves and restores the state of all windows - either when you want it or automatically at startup and after crashes allowing you to resume a previous browsing session from where you left off. Additionally it offers you to reopen (accidentally) closed windows and tabs. Fission: Puts the progress bar in the address bar, making the progress bar more visible and allowing for a nice visual effect. Options Menu: Provides quick access to the options dialogs of installed extensions via an 'Extension Options' cascade menu in the Tools menu or by a toolbar button. eBay Negs: Right click an eBay users name and select eBay Negs from context menu to see only a users negative and neutral feedback comments. FEBE (Firefox Extension Backup Extension): FEBE backs up your extensions, themes, and (optionally) your bookmarks, preferences, passwords, cookies and just about everything else Firefox offers. Duplicate Tab: Allows you to clone a tab along with its history. Google Preview: Shows a preview image alongside Google search results. Disable Targets for Downloads: Stops blank tabs/windows being opened when you download a file. Only theme I use is Glassier, a really smart simple theme. (Also use Adblock, Site Advisor, Cute Menus, Restart Firefox, BB Code, Fasterfox, DownThemAll, Download Manager Tweak, Customize Google)
  17. Yes there is and it sounds to me like you may have disabled some startup items that it turns out you actually need.
  18. Have you tried running CCleaner more than once? Some issues require more than one scan and fix. Also Zone Alarm may just be recreating the key regardless of how many times you remove it. If that is the case the ultimate fix would be an 'exclude' option in CCleaners issues scanner but this doesn't currently exist.
  19. Um, 95 people looked at it so far You only had one reply but you only posted it yesterday
  20. That Avira Unerase program is pretty good, just tried it and much prefer it to Restoration. Why does it complain about it being dangerous to restore files to the same volume though???

    how safe?

Same here, never even use the backup option anymore unless I see something suspicious (which I never have).
  22. There you go, there is a way, just ask Eldmannen Welcome to the forum
  23. I actually deleted the ones I knew I didn't need, then put that edited winapp2 in CCleaner folder, opened CCleaner to see which ones showed up (as it detects which are needed), then removed the winapp2 entries that didn't show up in CCleaner. It was quite surprising putting the whole thing in actually. CCleaner showed an entry for TuneUp utilities which I only used for the trial period a while back, so went into registry to remove TuneUp keys (though only the ones I was certain could be removed). Also showed Shockwave Player 8 which I don't have, left that alone though in case I broke version 10 which I do have. I checked the Downloaded installations folder before cleaning it and it only had iTunes (which I don't have any more) and Quicktime install files
  24. To be fair I can see where he's coming from as I never use the Tools section (startup and uninstall), prefer to use msconfig and Add/Remove. Though CCleaner is so small I doubt there would be much advantage to removing elements anyway. Adding Gutmann method cleaning would cripple the speed of CCleaner, I get fed up waiting for 3x overwrite, having been used to the speed of CCleaner but still use it. Certainly wouldn't use Gutmann (35x overwrite).
