  1. I don't think defrag is relevant to what CCleaner is aimed for. Plus I would suggest the active-x issue you are experiencing is a permissions issue, not a CCleaner issue. Check this link and try the Dial-a-fix permissions fix: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix_tips#CCleaner
  2. If you like that try PageStyle2Tab, gives the tabs the same colour or design as the page. Very useful for telling tabs apart and looks good too IMO (you'll need to temporarily disable Colorful Tabs if you try it though)
  3. Thanks for that, very helpful. BUT... (dumb questions coming up ) I entered my model number on the Crucial sute it said I had one memory slot with 512Mb currently installed. I tried their system scanner, it said I had 2 slots, each with 256Mb. The manual states: "512Mb(256+256)" and that "PC2100 256Mb or 512Mb or 1024Mb memory modules can be installed in the expansion memory slot for a maximum of 1.5Gb with the onboard memory and the expansion memory" This confused me (I've not had any experience of upgrading computers), so I took the RAM cover panel off to have a look and there is one memory stick there with a sticker on each side stating 256 Mb. Dumb questions are: Is the RAM stick 512Mb with 256Mb on each side (or 256Mb just with two stickers)? OR as I suspect from the manual description, is the stick 256Mb (and this is the expansion slot described) with the other 256Mb installed permanently within the laptop, or on the motherboard? (meaning I could put in a 512Mb stick and have 768Mb, or 1Gb and have 1280Mb) BTW The laptop is a Toshiba Equium A60 (and apologies for the dumb questions )
  4. A feature I would find useful would be to add a 'Secure Clean' button next to the 'Run cleaner' button so that I could click 'Run Cleaner' for a quick clean, or click 'Secure clean' if I want to do a secure clean (rather than having to go into the options, change the settings, go back to cleaner page then click 'Run Cleaner', then back into options to change it back)
  5. Yeah, I'd read that but it was all a bit jibberish to me (the update Knowledge Base articles used to be a lot more straightforward than that). Just didn't know if anything in it was still needed, or as it was a cumulative update will I already have the updates included in it (I assume this is just a tidy up of previous updates?)
  6. Thanks. One question though, as it is included in a cumulative update is there anything else in that update that is needed?
  7. I know how simple it is to do and I know exactly where and how on my laptop. Its not having a clue about what type of ram to put in and what it can handle that is my problem.
  8. Hmmm, if I had half a clue of what I was doing, maybe Not really, like I said just illustrating a point.
  9. It may be quite a modest computer for desktop users but for those of us who use laptops that is pretty high end, especially when you add in the necessity for a high end video card. I would guess that would rule out about 90% of laptop users. BTW I have a pretty new laptop (less than a year old), and I consider it to be pretty high spec by laptop standards but I couldn't run Vista (3GHz CPU, 40Gb hard drive with 70% free space but only 512Mb RAM and 64Mb graphics card) For the record I'm not anti Vista and am not too interested upgrading to it, just trying to illustrate a point.
  10. This from PCPitstop.com, usually very reliable and unbiased in their comments:
  11. Thanks for the warning

    Touchpad

I've had this problem a few times and its always been caused by a little bit of dirt or something stuck at the edge of the pad (ie between the pad and case round the edge of the pad). Try running a cotton bud or similar round the edge of the pad (or if you can see a bit of dirt VERY gently try to dislodge it with a pin or something).

If you try Eraser, use version 5.7. I found 5.8 to be buggy (and it's now listed as beta which I'm sure it wasn't when they released it)
  14. Yes it is possible and relatively simple once you get your head around the basics of the userChrome file. Click the link and go to the Chrome section and it gives a basic idea of how to use it and a great list of modifications you can add to the userChrome file to change the look of Firefox: http://www.linnhe.net/firefox/ Did a search of Mozilla forum and found your post with plenty of help so you shouldn't have any trouble getting it sorted (you'll get far more help there but thought the above link was useful enough to post).

    Office 2007

Probably not a good idea to add cleaning for beta software, could be done using winapp2 I assume. I'm sure someone will be along to tell you how at some point
  16. Isn't the i386 folder specific to WinXP(sp2)?
  17. Sounds more likely, part of my bank login is stored as a cookie. I would suggest going into CCleaner, click options>cookies, select the cookie with your bank name in it and click the > arrow to move it to the 'Cookies to keep' box.
  18. Try the advice posted HERE, seems to have become a very common problem at the moment.
  19. Also try using the relevant Symantec removal program for whatever version of NIS you have uninstalled - find the list of removal tools HERE
  20. However many you select in Options>Settings
  21. I would recommend the older version (5.7) as the new 5.8 version seems to be a little buggy at the moment, whereas I've never had any problems with 5.7 (and am still using it after briefly trying 5.8)
  22. Seems ok so far. One slight irritation though, it causes the Google Preview extension to show TWO preview windows for every search result - one for the result site itself and one for site advisor advice page on the result. Got round it by adding the Site Advisor preview windows as a filter in Adblock. One other minor thing, the status bar advice button could do with being a bit more colourful as there isn't much difference between the grey and green on this laptop screen.
  23. I don't have them, just three files in AVG application data totalling 37k Thats the AVG7QT DAT file, it creates that every time you run a scan. Its supposed to make scans faster IIRC but it can be safely deleted. I have it added as a custom file to remove in CCleaner and I've never noticed any difference in scanning times. Slightly clumsy programming IMO having that file created where it is though.
  24. I sometimes find that runnng CCleaner whilst browser was open would stop Java applications working but was always fixed by closing and reopening my browser.
  25. Better reserve a space in your thread for when it goes wrong
