  1. It could have been a macro virus however that's just speculation.
  2. I just wanted to say that's a darn good tip!
  3. We'll have to wait and see, this last week of waiting is really driving me more crazy than anything - it's the anticipation that's getting me. I'm really interested in the new 8 cylinder engines since they were reporting last season that some were in the 20,000 RPM range.
  4. I'll be wide awake Friday morning at 5AM CST watching Speed Channel to enjoy a live practice session for the 2006 GP of Bahrain. I just love F1 to the point I think I'm obsessed with anything Formula 1!
  5. Good. Yeah similarly they have allot of security updates, pun intended. The only thing though is after using sfc /scannow it's a good ideal to reboot.
  6. That's how I got to where I'm at today, I would royally f'up my Win98 computer back in 1998 only to learn how to fix it.
  7. It doesn't make much sense that CCleaner would detect it and not be able to remove it, and I think it's redundant to tell you to "make sure your using an admin account" because you most likely already know that. What's really strange is using RegEdit you can't see it. When you stated that RegSeeker can't find it were you talking about using its registry cleaning portion, or its search registry function. You may want to try Sysinternals RootkitRevealer, hence it will find some malformed registry entries rather they are rootkit based or not, getting rid of what it finds is a whole other matter.
  8. Formula 1 fans rejoice, F1 returns to televised coverage later this week! I'll be watching.
  9. Hopefully sfc /scannow works the same on Win2k.
  10. Yeah MrG stated that a some code was changed, and I sure hope it isn't a month or two down the road, it's enough of a problem that a minor bugfix release should be uploaded pronto so that it doesn't keep causing problems.

    Help!

Yeah all good suggestions. After you install CCleaner: 1. Click the big Cleaner button and Run Cleaner. 2. Click the big Issues button and Scan for issues and fix them all, I'd recommend keeping a backup in a good location such as the My Documents folder. Keep running the Issues scan until it no longer finds anything. 3. Reboot. If you're still having problems let us know. We can also tell you what security software to download to make that WinMe computer relatively safe for online usage for your kids so you don't have to constantly keep checking it - e.g.; with the proper software the computer can take care of itself with only a little manual intervention from you every now and then.
  12. Yeah they posted info about it in the thread I started on the Arovax Forums about there being an update that fixed it. So all is well. And thanks for posting on here so people know it's now fixed.
  13. For anyone wondering if they're hotfixes are actually installed correctly visit Microsoft Update and click the link Review your update history. Anything with a or on it should be re-downloaded and re-installed. BTW that's the only way you'll find out if you're missing a hotfix when Microsoft Update doesn't detect them.
  14. Perhaps you need to make a new user profile? I'm unsure about this on Windows 2000 since I've never used it! However I definately know that on Windows XP sometimes something can go kaput in HKEY_CURRENT_USER and the usual fix is to create a new user profile and copy all the personal documents from the kaput profile to the new one. Of course this isn't going to help if the problem is in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE which will effect any profile old or new.
  15. I have to agree with you about that! I only used it for a few days and removed it. Arovax Shield however seems promising, although some stupid things like when manually downloading some Windows Updates it pops up a security alert about the changing of the default download directory which is silly and on the verge of annoying. Some default behaviours of IE aren't necessarily a potential risk or malware related such as where files are to be downloaded. However since I don't use IE but maybe 1-3 times a month I can put up with it.
  16. Most of those files have nothing but gibberish in them that looks like some encrypted data. If they won't delete you can always use Unlocker to remove them.
  17. And if you link to the download link to the clean non-adware versions called "slim" and "basic" that don't include the damned Yahoo toolbar.
  18. It could just be some funky error that may go away if you reboot. On my WinXP SP2 system every now and then it gets some memory problem (tested and all is ok) and I have to reboot, also some programs from time to time won't run and I have to reboot which I contribute to being something in Windows.
  19. True, I ended up having to Google search for it however I've finally bookmarked the page. The obvious would of course be www.paint.net.
  20. UP you may be alright. However I will always from now and into the future have some sort of real-time protection anti-spyware/anti-trojan that blocks crap in IE most notably the trusted sites zone because when I was a user of MSAS it blocked an entry as soon as I logged onto the Internet with my dial-up, I hadn't even got around to opening any browsers or update programs and bam it blocked a trusted site hijack and at that time I was using; eTrust EZAV, ZoneAlarm Free, MSAS.
  21. Well when I just tried it I was prompted to sign into Passport which I don't have an account to.
  22. Both are actually needed since some programs that require 1.1 won't work without it installed. I found out the hardway being a dial-up user, I uninstalled 1.1 before I installed 2.0 thinking I didn't need 1.1 anymore only to find out that some of my .NET programs wouldn't run therefore I had to download the .NET 23.1 MB setup file and the .NET 10.2 MB service pack 1 setup file - only to find out the very next day that an application I already had on a commercial CD already had both setup files on it. Duh..!
  23. It just means the homepage was updated, not CCleaner. That seems to stump allot of people every now and then.
  24. Ha ha, from your topic description I thought I was going to have to fire up my download manager to get new versions. SpywareBlaster when checking for an update using the integrated update feature will tell you there's a new version that must be downloaded from the website. If I'm remembering correctly I think Ad-Aware will have info listed in the News area underneath the update process that will state a new version was released. I think Spybot SD will display that a new version is available but I'm not sure.
