  1. Well, then, I was right from the beginning when talking about EmptyWorkingSet I guess I'll try CleanMem next time Firefox reaches the gigabyte of used RAM (not trolling - that actually happens).
  2. Well, the author doesn't explain which API he's calling...but it still doesn't work on my system
  3. If it doesn't use the pagefile, would you mind explaining why FF's memory usage significantly drops when running CleanMem, and then goes back to its previous level once the FF window is active again? I don't believe in all those memory cleaners/optimizers/defragmenters. They simply call the EmptyWorkingSet Windows API, which forces everything to be paged. A quote from a well-known Windows expert... But I guess if it actually has an effect on your system, that's a good thing...I only believe what I see, especially about Windows "optimization".
  4. It hasn't changed...it puts everything in the page file, and then memory usage jumps again when you go back to other programs... It might work against Firefox's memory leaks, however...
  5. That's a myth. Some FF flaws were not patched months after their discovery, since Mozilla doesn't really care about vulnerabilities unless they are actively exploited.
  6. Too bad you can't have multiple choices.
  7. Is it one of the bugs that can't bypass Protected Mode? There have been a lot of IE security holes lately...well, Firefox and Safari still have more flaws than IE.
  8. Some things on that list are not well-known...Ashampoo Firewall? Does it protect you while you're showering?
  9. Call me stupid, but I won't use Opera after what they did in Europe (the browser ballot)
  10. Do you have an antivirus? I can't think of a reason why a simple file deletion would produce a BSOD (BSODs happen while in kernel-mode...)
  11. You shouldn't run any Registry cleaner without looking carefully at what it detects - ever. There is no 100% safe registry cleaner, and anyway performance gains are minimal (unless you deleted tenths of thousands of keys, you wouldn't notice any difference)

Actually, not being able to read PDFs from your browser has a good side : It prevents exploits targeting Adobe Reader directly from your browser. It is quite easy to insert a small iframe containing a malicious PDF if you have admin access to a website. By the way, does anyone know if the PDF plugin for Firefox is also sandboxed like the main program? I know IE's and Chrome's are, but...
  13. Well, it already exists (both a web app and a desktop app)...I wonder what could be added to make it better.

I'm not worried about losing 150 MB, I'm worried about what they did to make it weight 150 MB when SumatraPDF is 1.5 MB and reads "normal" (no forms, JavaScript or other uncommon things) PDFs just fine.
  15. Please provide a credible source. Three or four users complaining on support forums does not mean a "large number" of users are still using Win2k. I'd bet those are less than 1% of Piriform users.
  16. Please send a Private Message to MrRon (or another member of the Piriform staff)
  17. I don't think Piriform wants to test all entries in Winapp2.ini. A single bad entry could do a lot of harm.
  18. You cannot use both an old OS and modern applications. People who still think older OSes are better shouldn't complain about not being able to use modern software

I remember Adobe also forcing "Acrobat.com" with no opt-out, but I never understood what it actually does.

That's literally a hundred times more than SumatraPDF...does Adobe Reader make coffee, too ? 150+ MB for a PDF reader, even though there's a JavaScript engine inside, is waaaaaaaay too much.

How much disk space does it eat?
  22. I guess you could use robocopy (Vista/7) or xcopy, using the %DATE% environment variable as folder names. Something like this: robocopy "C:\Folder\To\Be\Copied" "X:\Path\To\Backups\%DATE%" You'd need to change the date format without using / or \ as separators to prevent creation of multiple folders, and set a scheduled task with this command to run daily. Not the most user-friendly or practical solution, but it doesn't require any additional software.
  23. Yes...French loves long sentences, and German really likes extremely long words. Rindfleischetikettierungs?berwachungsaufgaben?bertragungsgesetz, anyone? This means "Cattle marking and beef labeling supervision duties delegation law"
  24. On a SSD, all data is gone forever when you delete it (if your OS or drivers support the TRIM command, that is)
