Thanks for that Hazelnut.I guess I'll leave it a couple of days though in case any problems are reported. :)

This setup contains the free as well as the paid version of ewido anti-spyware. After the installation, a free 30-day trial version containing all the extensions of the full version will be activated. At the end of the trial, these extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version. The purchased license code can be entered at any time.

So what are the remaining post-trial features? Same as before?

I suppose it disables this after the trial period when it goes into freeware mode, this is my assumption according the feature list on their website:

  • Additional Features Of The Plus-Version
  • NEW Scheduled scans
  • Real-time monitoring of the entire system
  • Memory Scan detects active threats
  • Self-protection at kernel layer guarantees gapless monitoring
  • Automatic online-update

How does that differ from the previous version, ie would I lose functionality by upgrading to the new freeware version?

If you already have the Plus-Version that you purchased during v3.5 you'd have to check their website to see if v4.0 is a free upgrade or not. I don't know if it is, and haven't checked because I'll continue using it as the freeware version.

I have version 3.5, which I purchased 12/05, however, I have not a clue what my key number is nor how to retrieve it. The 3.5 interface doesn't help and the support seems to be through forums only. Any suggestions? I do love ewido by the way!

Slowday,

I also bought ewido, I went here -

http://www.ewido.net/en/upgrade

typed in my licence key for version 3.5 and a new key is issued straight away ( not e-mailed so save this one somewhere safe)

IT IS A FREE UPGRADE for licence key holders and apparently if you are due for renewal do it soon as there is an offer on for renewals.

I think you will have to e-mail ewido now as the old link for the key number reminder seems to have gone.

Peter ewido said it is best to uninstall old versions including beta first and reboot (and use ccleaner of course!) before installing new version.

My scans seem faster than the old version and the interface is good, I

am pleased with it anyway, quite a few new features.

So will I. What I meant was is there any functionality lost by upgrding from the old FREE version to the new free version?

JDPower,

I don't know about the functionality, but if you keep 3.5 it won't update now, at least I have not been able to do it since this morning. It says "no update available". I have been following a thread at Wilder's that talks about this and it has been my experience too. I finally found this link at the Wilder's forum where you can download the updates:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

The thread at Wilder's is at:

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=135997

I installed version 4 and did like it until I noticed that it actvated "guard" without me wanting it, I wanted to stick with the free version. I clicked on "deactivate" and it said that it was deactivatd, but at each startup it is loaded even if it is not active. I tried all the things I know, MSCONFIG, registry edit, nothing worked. i uninstalled it and for some reason reinstalled it and it came up "free version", but "guard" was still active in the processes. This bothers me just a little, so I guess I will go back to 3.5 and have to go looking for the updates manually.

Have a good day,

Normandie

If you're on WinXP try this:

  1. Start -> Run -> Type in: services.msc

  2. Scroll down to: ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard

right click it and select Properties

  3. Change the Startup type to Manual or Disabled.

Also there's actually a few antivirus scanners that can only be disabled via services.msc on WinXP.

That was the same with version 3.5 too wasn't it, with the ewidoctrl.exe process?

When you purchased the product you will have gotten an email with the license key on that day. Copy the license key, then paste it into the form at http://www.ewido.net/en/upgrade/ and retrieve the 4.0 license key.

P.S. You can contact Ewido support here http://www.ewido.net/en/support/

I figured out how to get it. There was an account tab on their support page that linked to log in with several options available if you'd lost the key. Thank You!
