  1. I have a small place, so I am trying to make the most of every part of the place I live. Got ideas? Please post!!!
  2. I wouldn't say that 8 is more secure than 7, until it has been battle tested. Huge swaths of code have changed around. Saying that 8 is an armored tank, when it might get tanked by casual script kiddies is a joke. That is not to say that 8 may not be more secure, but until it has been battle tested, it's like saying that someone invented a better bullet proof vest (without testing). Sure, I believe MS subjected 8 to internal tests, but those tests are far different from the scary real world. _____ At the moment, I am inclined to stay with 7, until 8 proves its mettle against hackers, viruses, & the online menagerie of nasties. It may take a year, or multiple years. Even so, a win may be in-conclusive. It may even happen that someone believes they know an OS inside & out, only to be embarrassed by some simple trick that is least expected which brings a system down. How do you think Pwn-to-Own operates? _____ Will be really interesting to see how Windows 8 + IE 10 fares in next years pwn-to-own... _____ I hope 7 wins. Not because I hate 8, but I'm used to 7. And I like it. And I hope it's secure.
  3. Firefox seems to generally render webpages better than Internet Exlorer, although some website will block all but IE users. Because user profiles may get corrupted, & because newer firefox versions trying to use older firefox profiles can cause problems, create a new admin user under the control panel. Reboot, & login to the new profile. Then, after you ran CCleaner: - Download & install the latest non-ie flash, then do the same for Firefox from the Filehippo website. - Install ad block plus. - Download & install the latest video drivers for your PC. If your still having problems, please post back.
  4. I wonder if you could post a few pages of the defraggler log? I am sure it may help the developers to analyze the contents of it.
  5. To add a bit to what Alan was saying about SP3. _____ There are many people who run SP3 machines with no problems, but there are also many who have lots of problems with SP3. The trouble is, that SP3 changes the way XP functions in respect to random address layout & makes changes to key system areas. While this may not be a factor for a lot of people, it certainly does cause problems with certain hardware/software configurations. Far more so, than SP2. While it is true that switching hardware & updating software (if they even have an update for some programs) may or may not fix things, one should not have to switch hardware every time they write a few new lines of code. In general, SP2 is stable. And in general, also SP3. But less so than SP2 has been my experience when working across multiple machines. Could be wrong on this, but sure seems like SP2 machines break less often (read: crash less, experience fewer problems, re-install less) than SP3 cousins. I may be wrong on all this, but it is what seems to be my experience. While I do know that there are SP3 machines that users appear to have no problems, I also know that everyone uses different software (and such, the problems arise). So for now, I tend to side with the belief of Alan, as my experience across multiple PC machines & configurations gives me the impression that SP2 machines are a wee bit more stable & less crashy than their SP3 cousins (cause fewer problems in general with the widest range of older + newer software). _____ I happenced to not mention a clean SP3 install, seeing that the reader suggested that it worked fine in SP2, but went squirrelly the moment he switched to SP3.
  6. I emailed the author of SS&D to let him know about the bloat. Requested a return to simplicity with 4 basic buttons: - Scan - Update - Settings - Donate As well as suggesting to remove installed services so portability is unhampered.
  7. I have heard that the Media Center key that MS gives you for free, will make 8 permanently activated. Not sure, but I will be testing. Because I like to see if what I hear is right or wrong. There are a few other things I have heard about 8, but I will save that for another day of testing.
  8. What OS are you using? XP/Vista/7? And is it 32 or 64 Bit? Have you tried a reboot, then updating to the latest version of flash lately, before trying to open those flash rich web pages? And if your using Firefox, go to Options/Advanced/Network/Settings & select No Proxy & save. * Newer versions of Firefox work best if they are clean installed with a clean profile. Or use MozBackup to backup your bookmarks/passwords. Then, let Firefox create a new profile, close firefox, & run MozBackup to import the old settings into the new profile container. When I updated from lower Firefox versions (think like 9/10/11) to 13/14 etc., I had problems with massive slowdowns/website hangs till I did this. I believe Firefox changes the way it handles profile containers on newer versions, which is why this happens. It may or may not fix your problem, but worth checking into.
  9. Always remember! Right-click is your friend.
  10. I saw where one user posted that CCleaner displays multiple user profiles, & makes it hard to clean because it shows them all in one place. Can we have the option to only display the currently in use profile under settings somewhere? Because multiple profile display may cause problems if someone disables/deletes files in the wrong profile. Thanks!
  11. Does this mean I should stick to 1.43 for the moment? How does it do in Windows 7?
  12. What surprised me, was to find not only that people's profile pics disappeared after the last Piriform outtage, but also the picture attachments on posts. I am guessing all the older posts were affected, too. How interesting!
  13. I used to have a schwinn E500 electric scooter that later added twin car headlights in the front with twin car horns, amber blinkers on the rear, MP3 player dock + speakers, 12V lighter socked (to power the amp for the speakers), bike trailer hitch, & perhaps a few other things. The hardest thing to do, was figuring how to wire it to run 12V items on the 24V battery pack system. I had many people wanting to buy that from me, but I always declined. When I talked to Schwinn about a replacement battery sometime later, the rep was very impressed by the pics/video I sent, & sent that to the president of the company. It got me thinking... What would it be like if I made some electric motor powered shoes? Complete with remote control for forward & reverse?
  14. I much agree with you that 8 is a different kind of beast we are working with, in more ways than 1 when you throw in secure boot parameters.
  15. Since Windows 98 does not run programs in separate memory spaces, & uses the very limited FAT32 file system, I doubt that knowing it inside & out will ever make it more secure or stable than an NTFS based OS that does run programs in separate memory spaces, such as Windows 2000 & higher. Cross-linked files & blue screens of death were common in 95/98/ME, because of programs over-writing each other, instead of having their own space.
  16. Offhand, I want you to know that I have used Windows 8, but I found that when I installed it to my netbook that it complained the screen was too small, not the right resolution, & I had various other problems that I shall not list here. So, I reverted to 7. Perhaps not permanently, as I do intend to re-test 8 again after I have enough fixes for some of the problems I discovered together. I do not have a hatred per say of 8, just a dislike of the way some things do not work (at the moment). That may change with more testing/etc. You should never re-interpret what you think a user means, or does, or says. I know it can be confusing that I mentioned about using 7 earlier, but that does not mean I did not use Windows 8. Not that I have used Win 8 as long as 7, for it has not been out as long as 7 or XP. That's to be expected. I confess that my replies are a bit brief at times, so I shall work on including more data in the future, if that is your wish. I do appreciate your vast smart phone knowledge, & yes, XP does have a few bugs such as the one that causes Explorer to begin slowing in a directory with more than 3,000 files in it, & to blatantly crash with more than 5,000. You can use other programs to work around XP's buggy shell. I may eventually test another explorer shell to replace the one in XP with a more modern variant that can handle more files. Sure, XP is old & has bugs, but that does not mean other OS don't either. Don't count it out yet, because it may be possible to fix XP!!! Edit: I think you mis-understood what I meant by everyone having a stable OS. Ubuntu is free, so everyone with internet access is free to download it. Perhaps I should have stated that everyone with internet access has the capability to download & use a stable OS. Sorry for the mis-understanding here, & thanks for pointing that out so I could correct it.
  17. Can we have 1 tab for all the web browsers? _____ Currently, they are spread across Windows & Applications tabs. Would be much easier to use if they had Applications | Browsers | Windows _____ Consider the following scenario: Julie doesn't want her cookies erased, because it stores her login information to site X. Julie DOES want to clean her PC. She unticks cookies under Internet Explorer, quite forgetting that she had Firefox installed, or even that Applications tab lists the "other" web browsers. ZAP! Because Julie did not have a master cookie de-selector option, all the cookies she had under (firefox/chrome/safari/opera) get erased. Now, she is unable to log-in & she can't remember her passwords!!! _____ Also, it is a pain to check long lists to find your web browser(s) & hope you uncheck the cookies option for each of them without missing something. When you have 1,500+ softwares installed on a test machine, the list can be quite long to navigate to try to find cookies under every browser. Please, can we have a tab for Internet Browsers so that we can have a master cookie selector/deselector so we don't run into problems like this? Thanks!
  18. I have not noticed this on my 32 Bit 7 machine. But then again, I am using a Lite-on external DVD drive. But floppy disk access IS a problem in 2.11.
  19. Defraggler uses full defrag by default. But that takes far longer than just defragging the files, in addition to killing drives faster. Wouldn't it be much better if it set quick defrag for the default action when the button is pressed, & let users select full defrag if they wish? Benefits: - Defrags will be much faster (for single & multi-drive defrags) - Drives will last much longer - People will be happier * Errors will probably decrease, & there will be fewer complaints. Also, please allow quick defrag as default for scheduled defrag. After you fix scheduler so it works.
  20. Sometimes, I wish I had wheels. Especially when going through city block sized aisles in Walmart.
  21. Can you re-post screenshots? Piriform outtage took your pics with it. This will be very confusing to people reading your posts, trying to figure out what you mean. Thanks!
  22. This is cool, but I feel like something's missing. I selected parts for 5 min, & the robot I got certainly didn't have half the parts I selected. I must have selected like, 20 something hearts, 14 pairs of legs, 10 heads...
