  1. Ricky, I would say that the 3 main causes of locking up: - Ensure your case/GPU/CPU fans are clear of dust. Else, heat will slow & kill your PC over time. - Ensure you have enough RAM. Else, PC will crawl when it reaches your RAM limit. - Ensure your PC is clean/defragged/eliminate all unnecessary startup items.
  2. While Microsoft believes Product Activation is good for the masses, how long will it be before virus creators start distributing some fun game (fill in the blank program here) that users love, & (like Firefox) embed a service. Only, instead of using it for updates, doing the following: At random times, run the embedded MS license key changer to import a key that is invalid & blacklisted (so user machine will generate "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" error message). Then, user desktop wallpaper gets disabled, screen is black, & users are denied most things on the computer. Worse, by disabling Windows Activation Technologies Service, users will be stuck in a permanently disabled pc. This will cause havoc for billions of legit users, who have long forgotten what their license key is, & headaches for MS as they try to figure out which users are real & which are pirate users who have not purchased their OS. Then, watch for lawsuits against (everybody, literally!) as MS comes swinging with the strong arm of the law, complete with high paid lawyers & billions of $$$ behind them as they scream bloody murder! EVERYBODY is a pirate! It could cripple the economy, & cause Microsoft to kick the proverbial bucket. The trust people have in WAT (Windows Activation Technologies) will die * Don't services get full control of the OS in 7? I forget... Anyway, so this is what happens when corporations are in control of the things you buy from them. Thank you, MS, for embedding such an easy way to cripple an OS for malware writers.
  3. I just want to be able to: - Send Windows files (or directories) to the fastest part of the disk - Send user files (or directories) right behind Windows files - Free space right behind user files This would maximize speed, because Windows takes a hit loading Windows files. The faster it can load Windows files, the faster it can access user files.
  4. Currently, users can set a schedule on Defraggler, but they must do a full defrag. I was thinking that when a user goes to schedule, it would be nice to have an option to allow a user to check what they want defragged. _____ Defrag: ( ) Files ( ) Free Space ( ) Both _____ This would eliminate a lot of drive wear & save time, if they only wanted to do a quick defrag. They could also do it this way. Defrag: ( ) Quick ( ) Full _____ Not that this would do any good, because df.exe doesn't launch when I set a schedule. Other programs work fine on a schedule.
  5. This sounds like a bad thing. How can it be good to make like you have 500 GB (if you really haven't)? What happens if you get Windows to lie that you have 500 GB (& you've only 100), then Windows forgets you only got 100 when it is mirroring your files (or you install a 250 GB game)?
  6. Well, who ever goes over 3.5 GB memory use when browsing, anyway? I mean, besides me...
  7. Thanks for the update! Feels like forever since we had a new Recuva! Loving the new releases.
  8. In fact, many of the same bugs are still present that were posted in this post: http://forum.pirifor...showtopic=35939 When you try to safe eject a USB flash drive, it "Is in use" despite checking option hide removable drives in Defraggler. Only unloading Defraggler frees it. And when I set Defraggler 2.11 in my 32 Bit 7 to run a defrag on a schedule, it NEVER loads unless I manually do so. Someone needs to fix these bugs! * 2.11 also has floppy access bug, where it queries floppy disks. Can we eliminate floppy support, please? Thanks!
  9. Defraggler 2.11 on XP SP3 still showing "telephony" brackets, instead of the normal. When is this going to get fixed? I heard someone say that they only fix problems on supported OS. If this is so, they need to drop Vista support since Vista is already dead & XP is still supported by MS. XP Support: -> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/endofsupport.aspx (Dies April 8, 2014) Vista Support: -> http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us&c2=11732 (Already dead) Quite ironic to support Vista, which is already dead, when XP is supported till 2014, dontcha think? Anyway, anyone know WHEN this will be fixed? Works fine in 7, but it's an eyesore in XP!!! Thanks!!!
  10. http://arstechnica.com/security/2012/11/new-linux-rootkit-exploits-web-servers-to-attack-visitors/ Thought this was interesting! What do you all think?
  11. Cool. So, long story short, if you pool multiple drives to increase space, mirroring takes up more space. So, net effect is you just decreased your space right back down again, negating the benefits of pooling... Well, guess you still have a copy, even if it takes up several times the space of the original.

After all these updates, next one's bound to be bug free. And perfect.
  13. Oddity observed: Set power plan to sleep after 1 min. Allow netbook to fall deeply asleep. Wake it (no wifi), then let it fall asleep in 1 min & wake it & wifi works. Weird... Not the solution I am looking, so testing some more. Still remaining to try (Reset connection to WPA2 & check other possible solutions): -> Navigate to router settings via browser, & change to 801b output. -> Install netbook chipset driver (test both XP & 7 variants). It now seems that just about the only possible solutions (that I can think of) are: - Use non Windows, such as Ubuntu. - Use XP - If using 7 & wifi is disabled on resume, send it to sleep & wake it back up. Or, set 7 to never sleep. * Weird thing is, 7 will briefly detect the connection on resume from sleep, then it will disappear & say there is no connection available.
  14. Though, I can't tell you when I have needed to run that. You also have a skip file (if you know its ok) option with SFC when it finds a "changed" file, do you not? I forget. Long time since I used it. Anyway, what do you think when someone uses 8's HDD pooling capability to combine nine 80 GB HDD as a single drive so they can store one of their precious gaming CD's in iso format, then one of the HDD dies (taking part of your image with it... forever)... Or, Windows klutzes somehow, & your drive mapping scheme goes haywire. Perhaps you accidentally bumped a wire (or 2) & Windows swaps drive letters on drive reconnect. No need to tell you what would happen if Windows tried to complete a write to drive D (formerly drive E) during the swap. Or if you put the copy on pause & add an external drive with partitions D/E/F/G/H on it via USB. Shudder to think of the horrors when you unpause copying! Wonder which would cause more problems? SFC, or the new HDD pooling feature of 8?
  15. 2012 has seen many new OS versions appearing. So I thought I would ask you all which OS you would use for a netbook, & why? -> Windows ME -> Not supported by netbook hardware -> Windows 2000 -> Stable, uses less RAM than newer MS variants. Will the performance blow XP/Vista/7 away? -> Windows XP -> Stable. Startup & shutdown a bit slower than 7, but includes built in support to snap pics from webcam, + view .GIF in viewer. -> Windows Vista -> May run slower than XP or 7. -> Windows 7 -> Decent startup/shutdown. Stable, most things work. Have to manually add support for viewing .GIF files in viewer. -> Ubuntu -> http://www.ubuntu.com/ -> Linux Mint -> http://linuxmint.com/ -> Zorin OS -> Linux distro claiming to support win apps via embedded W.I.N.E + look like 7 -> http://zorin-os.com/ -> Reactos -> Windows "clone" with aim to be free of licensing fees -> http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html -> Puppy Linux -> Aims to be "lite" Linux distro -> http://puppylinux.or...g%20Started.htm Also, disabling services such as: indexing (I use Locate32), auto updates (I update manually), system restore (I have backups) can improve performance. Am going to update from 1GB RAM to 2 GB for Christmas. Sticking with my HDD, instead of SSD or 7,200 RPM upgrade for now. Feel free to list any tips, tricks, or performance boosters that you use. See any viable OS not listed that you think is great? Let me know about it!
  16. + 1 If possible. Please. And thank you. Sounds like a great idea.
  17. Thread update (11-20-2012): Problem still exists. Attempting to resolve problem with one of the fixes listed below. What has not worked so far: -> Downgrade driver to very old version. -> Update to latest driver. -> Use XP driver for 7. -> Disable Microsoft Loopback network adapter (didn't even have any) -> Use user accounts & passwords to connect to other programs option -> Leave Homegroup -> Latest Bios. And there are no advanced options in BIOS of netbook that can be changed pertaining to wifi. Very basic time/security/boot options. -> Disable power save under network adapter properties. -> Update to latest driver from MS updates. -> Enable Network discovery -> Enable Hybrid sleep -> Restart WLan autoconfig service (after resume from sleep). -> CMD/ipconfig /release all -> ipconfig /renew (after resume). -> Disable/enable adapter (after resume). -> Task Manager/End explorer process/Restart explorer.exe (after resume). -> Right-click connection/troubleshoot. -> Can't downgrade to 7 beta. Nasty Media Player bug that ruins MP3 files, or so I heard. -> Disable IPv6. The netbook wifi works great on resume under XP. It only happens under 7. When it first wakes up, it may even show the connections available for a short period of time, then they disappear & say no connections available. The only thing that has worked (so far) is a reboot to get it working again. If I allow it to enter sleep by itself or enter sleep/hibernation manually, I can resume. Unless I leave it in sleep for oh, say, 30 min or more. Then, I can resume from sleep, but the wifi no longer works (till I reboot). For each possibility I try, I have to let the netbook enter sleep for 30+ min. Bear with me a few weeks while I exhaust every living option available that I can think of to find the solution & post it here. This demon has haunted me long enough, so I am going to go full at it for the next week or two till I nail it!!!
  18. 1) Faster 2) Like to experiment 3) Why not? * If I can get a faster "7" without the metro (netbook does't have touch screen, & screen resolution is too small for it to properly work), why not?
  19. There are 3 reasons 8 is selling slower than it's predecessors... 1) Market Saturation -> Now, almost everyone has a PC with a stable OS that isn't prone to cross-linked files, cussing, & repairs. 2) Stability -> Hardware + Software that is decently optimized & doesn't crash for extended periods. Sometimes even a few weeks or months!!! Yay... 3) Stagnation -> After the 1st rounds of product activation/suing customers into the dirt/price gouging licenses/false positives that called customers theives, companies are in no hurry for a repeat. In fact, they rather enjoy being able to have a stable system that for just once, works. Taking the time to relearn an OS, reload all software to newer OS, retraining employees across the board to use the new OS & be familiar with it & the new options, whew!!!! Companies are clinging to what they already know works. Having to rebuy, relicense, relearn, retrain, & re-try-to-understand-all-the-new-legalese-changes-and-terms have the heads in charge short circuiting a brain cell or two. At least if they stick with the old that they know, maybe they won't be sued for violating some oddity they failed to catch with the new draconian license terms. By the time you figure out what your legally allowed to do (which isn't much, apparently), it might not make sense to do anything at all!!! Whoops! Brain overloaded. 20 years of ever changing OS landscapes, licenses, terms, agreements with 200+ pages of legalese have me practically steaming in my grave before I kick the bucket. LOL! Well, that's all folks, & that's my take on things. What do you have to say? Edit: I should have stated under market saturation that everyone with internet has ACCESS to a stable OS (Ubuntu, other freebies). Thanks Nergal.
  20. http://www.neowin.ne...-win7-explorer/ I thought this was really, really cool. I will try this out soon, to see how this works. Hazel, LOL!!! I know, I know... 8's already great, don't be lazy, try the touch, etc... But my netbook isn't touch, & the screens resolution is too small for tiles, & I wanna try 8 to see if it is any faster on it or better. So, if this works like it looks, I will be able to have a de-metro'd 8 that works like 7 until I need the tiles, then I can add them back by uninstalling. Crossing my fingers, & if anyone gets to try it before I do, please lemme know what you think... * Please only try this on an experimental box, & only also if you are a bit experienced. You first have to obtain the Win 7 files as per instructions before applying it to 8. I intend to test on something like my netbook eventually, to see how things go. Or perhaps, even experiment with other coolish ideas. Just to see what happens.
  21. DRM has a nasty habit of locking paying consumers out, while people who remove DRM are easily able to play it like intended.

As I also hate bloat & love ease of use, I caused KMP to save settings to .ini (portable) & to always load a skin I selected, centered on the screen. It's far smaller than the default KMP skin, & much cleaner. By always loading center, it avoids that video gets "lost" off the edges of the screen. I have a second skin I can right-click & switch to that has 1-click saving of audio from audio files, video from video files, etc. This works great.
  23. Try: - Adjust audio slider (sometimes machine is muted, & this unmutes it). - Update BIOS from manufacturer website (if your are experienced at things like this, as they contain bug fixes). Turn off your A/V till reboot so it won't block it. - Use default OEM audio driver from manufacturer website. Sometimes, default may work better. - System Restore -> Sometimes, this can fix or repair problems. - Microsoft Fix-it -> http://windows.micro...-sound-problems * Had a friend once, who had ME on their machine. Blue-screened on XP update, till they updated the BIOS. Then, it worked for years with no problems. Newer BIOS may work better with your audio.
  24. I don't know if I'd even call it cracked. Sometimes they just simply use a wrapper & browser code to restrict access to a file, as well as trim the extension off the file to make it harder to find. And the wholly unprotected file will be there laying in the browser cache, waiting to be played. How can they call it protected, if it's not? I'd say that's deceptive marketing! Isn't there a truth in advertising sort of law?
