  1. Done. I am still going after it with a "surgical" approach, but may show up on bleeping any minute if that fails. But no more here, don't want to cause discomfort. Actually I fear that some gentle reader might try some of the steps suggested here and gum up his computer.
  2. "Some other things one can learn form the Pi" That is a great site. I thought the little motherboard in a clear case, no moving parts, little flashing lights and a pretty big performance might help get the young kids interested in programming, or at least give them a different perspective on what a computer really is. Still may try it.
  3. Some earlier discussions: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=43375&hl= Mine has 512 mb RAM and their first processor. It is not the newest one available. The newest, called the version 2 (I think), has 1 gb RAM and a faster processor. Still, this older version is about as fast as some of my old desktops were. No kidding. The newest is supposed to be about 7 times faster. May have to upgrade. The little computer is surprisingly fast. I want to set a newer one up with a wireless mouse & keyboard, so that it will set on a table hooked to a TV. It could then be used as a computer or a media device. Did a bit of shopping, all the components and the new Pi would cost about $100 US. No go yet, that's a bit steep for a plaything. But sooner or later . . .
  4. No luck yet. Ran ADW, JRT, ZHP, HitmanPro, MBAM, Avast scan & Avast boot scan. All found bits & pieces but eventually came clean. Manually removed old Norton & Symantec entries. I fear this is more invasive than I thought, and will eventually get into genuine malware removal, so will not pursue it here. I suppose I'll go over to Bleeping and ask them to have a look, or just do a reinstall. Thanks to all for the help and suggestions, it's very nice to have friends who will help. All your suggestions helped, made the computer a bit faster, but the popup still pops.
  5. @ mta: Oh dear. That seems right on target, especially looking at post #17 even though my problem is on win 7. If it is that complicated I probably will just go over to Bleeping and let them guide me thru it. I'll be back at the computer today, will try everything starting with the easiest stuff and report back. Thank you again.
  6. All good ideas. I'll be back at the computer soon and try them. It belongs to a family member, and I know it had McAfee on it for a while. I'll post back whatever happens. Thanks very much. I forgot to say, CCleaner found a few leftover items and deleted them. Ran it twice, after everything else, to errr, well, clean up. I just didn't think about checking the startup list or the task items. Duhh.
  7. Anybody recognize this popup? It appears at startup on a win 7 64 bit laptop. No telling what the owner has installed on it in the past, but the computer is apparently malware free now. Avast & MBAM find nothing. ADWcleaner, Junkware Removal Tool, and ZHP Cleaner found & deleted some PUPS. It looks very McAfee-ish, so I manually deleted all references to McAfee from the registry. But it still pops up. Edit: If you "Click to Renew" nothing happens. I have googled, ixquicked, and duckducked, for both info and images. No luck. It is not malware, so you could offer advice without getting in trouble (I think). Thanks for any suggestions.
  8. The member kartun is banned, but his spam link lives on in his signature.
  9. I just ran the latest ZHP Cleaner here on xp. Ran OK, found the usual suspects, deleted them, all is well. It's not malware, but like any cleanup software it has dangers. You can cut yourself with a butter knife if you try hard enough. <--- Joke, not sarcasm. Joke. By the way, are you the original ident from a few years back? Big clue: Needs More Cowbell. If so, hi, long time no see.
  10. Right now it looks like that is not true for win 10 home users. I just finished reading every word of every link in this topic. Nothing one can sink ones teeth into, but all say home users will have to accept updates, and will be bug testing them for the benefit of enterprise users. Imho, probably will be a workaround eventually, but no inkling of it yet. On the positive side, It looks like win 10 will be better than win 8 for my laptop. Must rest now. Brain is experiencing propaganda fatigue.
  11. No won't go bad for microsoft. Might result in many many users discovering post hoc that they have win 10 and cannot go back without buying an install disk. As to the 'overlooking', it might be possible for microsoft to change the bios or some sector of the disk so that earlier versions won't work. But, under ordinary circumstances, I can't imagine that a full backup would even require a key to be entered. Any validity checks should come back OK just as they did on the original install, right? I don't see any way to verify that except just doing it. I do not wish to spread FUD, so must say I have NO reason to believe that restoring an external image will fail. Just thinking ahead.
  12. Thanks, Hazelnut. I did. Must say I much appreciate all the information in this topic. It seems that there is about one chance in a gazillion that this thing will go well for consumers. Losing the ability to play DVDs? No choice about updates? Phooey. Fwiw, I intend to get an imaging software, maybe Macrium but probably IFW (they give a license for 3 computers), and make complete images of the win 7 desktop and the win 8 laptop as they sit right now. Neither has been turned on for several months, and at last startup they worked pretty well. Then, regardless of what exciting consumer experience microsoft presents, I will be able to go back to an earlier configuration. Is that right or is there something I am overlooking?
  13. +1 And it looks like win 10 will be the least "flexible" version yet. @ Willy2, how did you "un-subscribe"? Next time my win 7 machine is turned on, that is the first order of business.
  14. Brian, your friends best recourse is to let his lawyer handle any communications with Piriform and his employer. I can say with some authority that the most common mistake people make when facing administrative, civil, or criminal charges is talking too much. edit: No offense meant, not trying to be brusque, just saying.
  15. Can you hide this update, KB3035583? For my part, I'll wait until Sandboxie works properly on win 10 before considering an upgrade. They're working on it: http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=21106
  16. Uh huh. Yep. Right. The government wants you to BELIEVE those are clouds . . .
  17. MultiBana, looks like you have malware. I'm not an expert, could be wrong. But whatever else you do, go to one of the sites linked by hazelnut (post #2) and get your machine checked. The softwares linked by trium are good, but you need reassurance from an expert. No offense meant to trium.
  18. Just tried it here on xp. Found some PUPS. Has the option to check each entry before quarantining. Nice one, eL_P.
  19. A person who develops distros would be a DistroTech, and wear a leisure suit? Burn them to a CD and you're a Disk-O-Tech? Is that what you mean?
  20. Hi, chmoore. Win xp here also. There is something else wrong, imho. Have you tried system restore? As Hazelnut says, there are no more bug fixes or security updates for win xp, but on the 13th of this month I got an auto update of the Malicious Software Removal tool, it downloaded, installed and ran. I just now checked, and when I ran "all programs > windows update" it went to this site and checked my update status. No updates available . http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us Here is a link to check: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058 Post back what you find out, all us old xp'ers would be interested. Sorry i couldn't help more.
