  1. CT, the weather sites show your area getting pretty much hammered. Snow's on its way to New York. Big storm.
  2. I bet everybody knows that feeling. And yet, through it all you stayed calm (or at least rational), true to your profile suggestion. Out of curiosity, what graphics setup did you finally settle on?
  3. It would be good to do something to protect the unwary. But . . . Wherever the registry cleaner is located, it will still cause trouble for some users. Given the number of CCleaner users, the reports of registry goof ups are quite few. A different idea, not necessarily better, put a stronger warning in place. Related question: What causes the occasional reports that the registry backup fails? That's the only part of this registry business that troubles me. Never happens here.

    Donna

Sorry for your loss of your friend, Corona.
  5. Yahoo help might be worth a try. https://sg.help.yahoo.com/ or https://sg.help.yahoo.com/kb/mobile-mail?
  6. Those numbers apply to video. All are conversions I made from .mp4 video. Using a free program called Freemake, I think. 9 or 10 percent ... was a smaller file in h264 + mp3 format, 13 or 14 percent ... was about same size in theora.ogg format, 46 or 47 percent was ... a larger file, saved in the highest available quality, don't remember details. Edit: 46 or 47 percent seems like a lot, but it doesn't slow things down much here, probably less on Corona's newer system.
  7. Corona, fwiw, I use VLC, only the portable, always the latest version. Win xp, fairly fast processor, 3.3 gb usable RAM. The way my system is set up, all of the VLC settings disappear after a restart. I have noticed that there is always a considerable delay the first time it starts, but not thereafter. Resource usage seems to vary by what type of file it plays. Not sure why, may be related to which codec it uses?? Here the usage varies from 9 or 10 percent CPU usage, 40 mb RAM 13 or 14 percent CPU usage, 53 mb RAM 46 or 47 percent CPU usage, 128 mb RAM It runs great here, and seems to play anything you throw at it.
  8. uBO ver 1.5.2 with SRWare Iron ver 45 portable works fine here. Am running it in a sandbox so if something gums up I can just delete the sandbox.
  9. @ Derek891. I have found 27 updates which will "probably" try to update to win10. Most lists are shorter than that. Avoiding win10 is whole bunch more trouble than its worth. A whole bunch. A Startpage search for "windows 7 telemetry updates to avoid" finds lots of useful information. It finds this page, which purports to be a complete list. Maybe it is?? http://www.paulstenning.com/windows-gwx-and-telemetry-updates-to-avoid/
  10. Quite right. That's what I understood you to mean. Actually you are being generous, though. Not too long ago, software was considered malware if it: 1. Collected information about you and sent it to its masters without permission, 2. Made significant system changes to your OS without permission, 3. Add / removed software without permission 4. Made deceptive claims about its functioning,
  11. Yep, thats what made me reluctant to upgrade. The old version works so well. But the new one is working well so far, as far as I can tell.
  12. "...Win10 which I view as insecure spyware" >gasp< . . . Just when I was about to upgrade. @ Andavari: You said " . . . the way I have it configured " That is a huge issue, mostly overlooked. The vast majority of mere mortals have neither the time nor knowledge to secure an OS after windows comes out with a new model. As a result, most business owners and government entities MUST update and pay the fee. For liability control. The profit from that goes to microsoft and is paid for by everybody, either in taxes or the cost of products. Edit: One small office I know of had to upgrade 6 or 7 computers. With new professional software and other expenses, cost $30,000. One government organization had to upgrade thirty thousand (30,000) computers. Cost unknown, but they get sort of pale looking when you ask'em.
  13. A few details are here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2016/01/02/microsoft-windows-7-problems/
  14. Thanks, Tas. I didn't take it, I think it was on the Chicago Tribune website. There is plenty of water there, and in the UK also, if we can just figure out how to transport it.
  15. News photo taken a couple of days ago. Volunteers building up a levee to hold back rising flood waters. Ten inches rain in 3 days.
  16. Happy new year, may it be the best ever, may we have peace, peace among our neighbors and peace within ourselves. Edit: nice avatar, mta, sort of "Pie in the Sky", eh? MMuuaahhaaahaahaa.
  17. OK, got it. Thanks. Those file paths are all different here, using a portable sandboxed version of Iron, but I get the idea.
  18. I'm still new to this adblocking business, care to explain why?
  19. Thanks to Hazelnut for the heads up, and thanks for all the information, and for the benefit of your experiences. I had seen that about "a wide-spectrum blocker" and some of the other explanations, but there is no substitute for advice from experienced users. In my brief experience, uBO is noticeably faster that Adblock Plus.
  20. My first experience with an adblocker. No, haven't been living in a cave, just never used one. For several days now have been using uBlock origin with SRWare Iron portable, sandboxed. Remarkable software, great time saver for this setup. I use an old version of Outpost firewall, and because Powershadow is running, it is difficult to configure the blocked sites, so there are lots of request popups (from the firewall). This uBlock origin software just stops them before they get to the firewall. Works Fast. Stopped 63 requests on one of the weather sites I visit. Since the Iron browser is running sandboxed, it is easy to correct mistakes in the uBlock o settings, just don't save the settings and start again. Trium, am I right in assuming that post #44 refers to uBlock Origin, not the newer version after it forked? How does uBlock origin compare to Adblock Plus?
  21. I just installed it and ran it on xp sp3 home, got this result: 23.8 mb to remove, 1 pass overwrite, 12.2 sec Registry cleaner also worked as advertised, took ~2 sec. If you downloaded it from Piriform, maybe some other software on your computer is stopping it. Some protector softwares don't like the google offers but you can uncheck those. Try the portable version, but just now I can not get the download for that version to work. There is a cosmetic problem, though, see the picture:
  22. Happy holiday wishes to DennisD, wherever he may be.
  23. Whichever holidays you celebrate, may they bring you happiness and contentment. For my part, Merry Christmas and may God bless.
