  1. Thanks for posting back how you fixed it. I really like your translations. Never knew the Chinese characters for "bla bla bla".
  2. I'm running FF portable version 48.0.1 on win xp here. There are addons available to disable those functions you mentioned. Those functions are not really removed but they are disabled. I just installed the addon to Disable Hello, Pocket & Reader, and also one called new tab override. They worked as advertised here, probably will there also.
  3. The author has a blog where you might try posting your screenshot. Its on the company website. Its multilingual. Not going to post the link here, looks iffy, but others who know more might post it. Also, if you can copy and paste the text from inside that popup, google translate might tell you what it means.
  4. You won't have such a file unless you have made a backup with CCleaner's registry cleaner. If you did so and can't find a .reg file, search for the text string cc_ Search the whole drive. Good luck, post back how it goes.
  5. Yes. The issue here was probably different. Here, Avast quarantined the Macrium update installer file. But I did finally get Macrium ver. 6.2.1502 to make an image of Win10 v1607. Verified the image but did not try to restore it. I'm using a paid version, don't know if that makes a difference. edit: I remember that I had to restart 3 times before the Avast tray icon became normal. A post about it here https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=46836#entry275509 and here http://forum.macrium.com/Topic8695.aspx
  6. Ahhh, well. Will now be even MORE difficult to avoid microsoft sponsored PUPs.
  7. I think maybe this topic could be deleted, and the single post moved here https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=46797 I didn't realize that Tas was talking about the same issue. Sorry about the confusion.
  8. FYI I was trying to create a rescue disk after installing the win 10 anniversary update. Macrium program wanted to update to 6.2.1502. During the update to version 6.2.1502 Avast quarantined WAIKfiles5x64.exe. The update and the disk creation failed a couple of times. Finally fixed it by using the Avast interface to restore the file and then Macrium worked. Reported the action to Avast as a false positive. Avast already knew about the issue with win 10, has published a fix. Here: https://www.avast.com/en-us/faq.php?article=AVKB272#artTitle
  9. Well said, sir. I actually like win 10, it seems good for my family. Too snoopy to suit me, so I pointed that out. But you're right, Tas, Macrium gives one lot's of options.
  10. Well, they gave it away for a while, very few people took it. Then they sneaked it in, then they pushed it in. That gave rise to at least 6 upgrade blocking softwares, also free. As of right now, last day of the freebie, about 20% of desktop users have adopted win 10. Probably just the number of busy folks who don't have time to watch every move their computer makes, plus a few early adopters. Now they are removing several important functionalities from the freebie they gave away. Those are important features they are removing. It's worth thinking about why they chose those particular ones. I'm just glad I imaged 8.1 before installing win 10. Question: What is the likelihood that microsoft will somehow lock the win 10 upgrade in so that one can not restore an image? That is a serious question, not rhetorical. At this point I wouldn't put anything past microsoft.
  11. I think it does delete them. I just tried it here with 2 identical folders full of pictures, created for this test. Win xp here. After running it, the deleted files were no longer in the original folder and the size of the folder was reduced correspondingly. The other folder remained the same as before running it. The files are not in the recycle bin, either.

    Slim version?

Before you install it you can tell by the file name, or by your download selection in Hazelnut's link. After it is installed you can't tell by running the program, but if you didn't install any of the bundled offers it doesn't matter. Or, if you did install them and wanted them it likewise doesn't matter. Edit: This one is or the "What was I thinking" list . . . If the installer file is still on your computer you can tell by the file name. - The regular Installer is ccsetup520.exe - CCleaner portable is ccsetup520.zip - CCleaner Slim is ccsetup520_slim.exe
  13. OK, fwiw, a summary of sorts. Maybe everybody already knows this, but . . . The update slowdown seems to be confined to win 7. The win 7 desktop here basically just froze as described above. The win 7 laptop belonging to a family member did about the same. The win 8 laptop here went through the entire process of upgrading from win 8 to 8.1 to win 10 in a relatively short while, no glitches.
  14. Well, a little bright spot in the middle of the mess. Not strictly related to win 7, but sort of. I just updated win 8 to win 8.1, went very smoothly, don't know how long it took couldn't watch it. Setup options were pretty straightforward. 8.1 seems a bunch faster. On the down side, Macrium doesn't work now. On the way over to their forums to ask about it.
  15. Thanks very much. Will give it a try. Here we go....
  16. Yesterday finished updating and imaging my win 8 laptop. Had not been turned on in 3 years. Battery is as flat as a flounder. ~175 updates in ~ 6 hours, installed. So it actually went pretty quickly. No glitches. Using paid Macrium imaging software. I want to upgrade all the way through win 8.1 to win 10, then probably put 8.1 back and run it, keeping win 10 in storage. If I make images of each OS as I go, will Macrium be able to put back the one I want to use? Or is there some part of the process that is irreversible? I am sort of checking around other forums, haven't found a definitive answer yet. Anybody know for sure? Hope someone can say for sure yes do it or no it won't work. Thanks in advance. Edit: The other, easier option is to just update to win 8.1 and stop there. Win 10 won't be hard to find if it's needed.
  17. Downloads here were fixed a few months ago, they had been pitiful. The serviceman found out that the wires were crumbling all the way between my computer and his servers. He replaced them, now downloads are better. Not blazing fast, but better. You are correct, the actual download, when I did it manually, was pretty fast, just a few seconds. The part that hung up was the updates window that said it was downloading them. In other words, the popup panel you see when you start windows update from the control panel. Win update had already found those last 2, and I had clicked on download and install. It said "Downloading . . .etc". Then the wait began. So it seems that the delay was somewhere in the innards of win 7 update machinery, not the hardware. Maybe I misread it, maybe it said "Download and STALL" . . . MMMuuaahaahaahaa.
  18. Those last 2 updates are still downloading, about 10 hours so far. But things are moving along smartly now . . . The little green scroll bar is scrolling nicely. edit: After about 14 hours of waiting I just downloaded the last 2 and installed them manually, that worked fine. Those were KB3161608 and KB3168965. After that, win 7 showed up to date. Anybody know why the update process hangs up so?
  19. Thanks, Willy2. I feel the same about the win 10 stuff. [begin rant] Win 7 updates are a disgrace. Updating a fairly fast win 7 laptop from scratch has taken, so far, 4 or 5 days, probably 36 hours if all added up. The update popup just sits there, no progress shows, just the little green scroll bar working. Can't tell if it is working or not. [end rant] Just this minute the process finished, and windows update now wants 2 more updates. Ahhh well.
  20. If you click on Tools > Uninstall CCleaner will indeed uninstall whichever software you click on. But if, as you said, you are in Cleaner > Applications then it will only clear out the junk.
  21. Willy2, help me out here, please. That page linked in post #36 recommends to install KB3138612 into win7. It's in that first table. The microsoft page for update KB3138612 says this: "This update includes Windows Update support for Windows 10 updates (feature updates) that are distributed though WSUS (content released after May 1, 2016). See related update 3159706." I have marked KB3138612 as hidden in the list I have, and hid it in the 2 updates I have in progress. Question: if KB3138612 is installed, will the win7 computer then start popping up those offers for win10? Thanks.
