  1. Hi from Tom B the newbie. (piriform Lounge)

    Hazelnut sent me!

Thanks to Hazelnut for starting me off with "how to "questions in the lost restore pointers topic area.

I have some general questions about how to use the forum.

    1.There are two reply buttons.

One just under a post, REPLY and one lower down Add REPLY,

    When do I use each?

I understand that fast reply will not repeat the question.

I understand how to use new topic.

I think Add Reply will create a new post after the last post. ( And will repeat the original post)

    How does REPLY work?

When I used it I did not see my post?

Did it only go to the person who posted the note that I replied to?

    2. When do I use Quote?

    3. How do I get an e-mail when a new post is posted for a TOPIC not the whole Forum?

    4. To the left of the list of forums are things like Pinned, and a pair, and smiles, etc.

    5. Where is there a list of their meanings?

    6. Is there a QUICK TOUR of the general usage of the forum?

7 .When I signed up to Bleeping Computer forum the sign up page looked like this CClean sign up page.

Are they connected? Or do they use the same basic program?

I tried to use the same password but it did not work.

    8. How do I get the spell check to work? ( I get an error ie spell not detected) (OK does not fix it?)

    9. Post Options, Enable email notification of replies? Does this send me an email if I get a reply to this post?

Thanks in advance for your help. Tom B the Newbie.

I used the "Reply" button with quotation marks next to it for this post, so your post is quoted within it up there.

  2. Using Analyze before Cleaning them is very wise. You can see what files are chosen for deletion before-hand.

Yes, Cleaning them will delete them. It's best to know a bit more about your system files before deleting them. Otherwise, you know, you're pooter may die.

If you're not sure, it's always best to create a System Restore point (or its Vista alternative) before deleting any files with CCleaner. That way if you do delete files and your system goes coocoo, you can use System Restore to restore your system files back to the way they were before the time you used CCleaner. Comprende?

Also note that in those upper left tabs (Windows and Applications) that you have the option of checking & unchecking boxes of categories that you want or don't want scanned.

For a start, any internet browsers' "cache" (IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc.) should always be checked for scanning & deletion. That's the major bulk of junk you want to get rid of.

  3. I tend to steer everyone away from programs that have a year in its title (2009, etc.) because a lot of rogue spywares use that technique in their evil products.

Avast and Anti-Vir have great free versions of their antivirus programs. And they're not bloated.

Malwarebytes' AntiMalware (MBAM) has a free version, also excellent.

With Avast, MBAM, and CCleaner I am covered. No problems.

  4. The Syberia games are pure adventure games. Definitely play 1 before 2. The graphics and story are top notch. If you get stuck look for walkthroughs online to give yourself some nudges.

    I bought 1 & 2 for PC quite a few years ago.

  5. I will have to see if I can pick up Dracula 1 & 2, do you suppose they are compatible with Vista?

    Lordy no.

Dracula Resurrection came out in 2000 and is for Windows 95/98.

Dracula: The Last Sanctuary came out in 2001 and is for Windows 95/98/ME.

A lot of these older games also rely on older hardware & software drivers which Vista definitely won't have.

I'd be hard pressed getting them to work halfway decently on XP even using compatibility mode.

Speaking of Siberia, you must've played Syberia 1 and 2 by now. Those are 2 excellent adventure games.

  6.

 With my 20" widescreen at 1680x1050 resolution it would take several lifetimes. With a 13" monitor at 600x400 resolution it might be a bit more forgiving.

  7. I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure Dracula 3 is an adventure game, not a hidden object game. If there is a hidden object scenario in it I'm sure it's just a puzzle more than a theme.

I'm not that keen on adventure games with a lot of human interaction and "exhaust all dialogue" scenarios. And when you're 30% to 50% into the game and you realize there are no new areas to explore. Then it's more work than fun, and I abandon it.

  8. I forgot about Track Mania. I had the free version quite a while ago. I'm no race nut but it was fun. I love the tracks even though I can't do some of them.

  9. I'm a PC person, best for me is custom tomb raider games.

I never knew such a thing existed. I have the old PS1 Tombraider games and I love how they took simple planar tiling and created such fun visuals and lighting.

I don't care for modern office/warehouse settings. But the underground lairs were the best.
