  1. Yeah it's definitely not a scam. Giveaway of the Day is a pretty reputable site...they wouldn't distribute adware/malware. It even gives you the opportunity to save back-ups of your existing drivers if you want to easily roll back.
  2. You might also want to give Driver Magician a try. It's excellent, but not free, although I got it for free through Giveaway of the Day.
  3. MVPS hosts updated today, November 13.
  4. I believe what the Bible says, and the Bible says no one will know when the world will end. Therefore, I think it's foolish for anyone to think they've got it figured out.
  5. Very nice software. I love the GUI! My only criticisms are very long scan times to detect hardware info, and not as much info for each item as competing tools (understandable considering it's an initial beta release). Overall though, very nice software!
  6. I would imagine they know a lot about me. I've used Google's services for years, and recently got a smartphone with Google's Android operating system.
  7. I figured I would start a thread to notify us when Fanboy updates his AdBlock list for Opera, Firefox, and Chrome (similar to the hosts file update threads in Windows Security). It was most recently updated today, November 8, 2009 (still the 7th here in the US, but the 8th where Fanboy lives in New Zealand). http://fanboy.co.nz/adblock
  8. Absolutely. SB should be a part of everyone's security solution. That's an entirely different product though.
  9. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html This is a pretty old app, but Javacool's site suggests that it is still worth using. I'm just looking for some input as to who still uses it and is it really worth it. Always looking for another layer of protection!
  10. Until recently, I really liked IObit's SmartDefrag product. I've since switched to Auslogics Disk Defrag (which is now better with V3), but would stop using SmartDefrag anyway because of this news. How shameful!
  11. hpHosts updated 10/28/09 http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download
  12. Thanks, but when I tried step 1, I got an error saying that "'GoogleUpdaterService' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." As for step 2, there is no file on my system with that name, or anything with the word "Google" in it.
  13. I'm putting this in Software, since I don't know where else to put it. I used to have Google Updater installed, but have uninstalled it long ago. I recently noticed (after using WinPatrol for the first time), that there is still a Google Updater service installed. It's set to manual and isn't currently running, but I'd like to delete it since obviously it is no longer necessary. How do I go about doing that?
  14. I think it's a really bored dog looking for some entertainment, so it's using it's own leg to pretend to steal the bone. That's my theory anyway.
  15. I'm behind my Linksys router's firewall, and Sunbelt Personal Firewall on my Windows XP machine, and Kerio Personal Firewall on my Windows 2000 machine. All three firewalls pass GRC's ShieldsUp port test with a full stealth rating.
  16. The concerns about the Foxit installer may no longer be valid. The issue is currently being reviewed by the publisher of hpHosts. See here: http://forum.hosts-file.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1746
  17. I use Foxit Reader too, but it's strange that the hpHosts hosts file blocks the foxitsoftware.com domain. Does anyone know why? http://hosts-file.net/?s=foxitsoftware.com
  18. The only Adobe product I use is Flash. Of course, Adobe really can't take credit for that fine product.
  19. I'm aware of what software is, and I still think posts about hosts files belong in the Windows Security forum. Threads about anti-virus software are about.....software, yet they still get posted in the Windows Security forum. It was just a friendly suggestion, but hey, what do I know? You're the mod!
  20. Not to nitpick, but a hosts file isn't really software, so shouldn't this be in Windows Security? Anyway, thanks for the update!
  21. You're right, but it still gets brought up from time to time, so maybe that info should be in a sticky?
  22. I don't know about MKV, but it does support AVI and MP4.

    Karenware

I know, I was just mentioning a smaller alternative. Thanks for posting the Karenware apps. A couple of them look very useful.
  24. Thanks, abu. Unfortunately, even after following the instructions in that link and then uninstalling/reinstalling Sandboxie, I STILL get the same error. I'm at a loss at this point. We'll see what the Sandboxie forum says. Unfortunately, that's not uncommon. Windows 2000 is often listed as being "officially supported", but there is no mention of things like this that prevent the app from functioning on Win2k. EDIT: The problem is resolved and Sandboxie is working great! If anyone else encounters the same problem, see here for info: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=41747.
