  1. I'm sorry. I wasn't referring to the ERUNT list, but the list of things not to clean with RegSeeker. Although Andarvi you did inform me of ERUNT about a month ago, and now I'm a little more relaxed. GOOD TIMES! K
  2. You're a genious, and my hero! Will you post your log for me please? Many thanks. K
  3. Thank you Mgr. It's aweswome. No problems here. Keep up the good work. Donations will be flying your way!! K
  4. I'm sorry, no. It doesn't need to be an external hardrive...just a different hard drive. I don't know about partitioning, but I read about it in one of these forums. I'm wondering if that would do the trick. The other option is floppy's, and the third option is a (zip drive?)...zip something. I have 2 CD burners, but according to Microsoft the backup utility can't be used with CD's. I know that the floppy's were a bad idea, but I was desperate after my computer downfall. I can't get the backup utility to save to my E drive. Your manual way seems simple so I'll try that route now. Thank you. Do you use ERUNT for your registry backup? What does ROFL mean? I don't think that I can make my own external hard drive. I'm planning to install an additional internal HD soon, but I was planning to use it for added files storage. I'm a computer speed junky. I've maxed my memory card additions so I'm on to more HD. Is Vista a 64-bit or 32-bit platform? Or something else? It sounds like a waste of money. GOOD TIMES!!! K
  5. No, we both have Spybot, but she downloaded a free Ad-aware program that was different than my free program. But I unistalled hers, and installed the one that I use because it kept finding a lot more things. I use Adaware, Spybot, Spyblaster, Windows Firewall, and Hardware Firewall, plus Maxthon. Oddly enough though, tonight my Microsoft Antivirus Beta (yet another one) decided that Spyblaster is a high risk threat (but I just ignored it). After my recent PC Hell I have loaded up on safety in every way. Did you know that with XP you need an external hard drive (something like that) for backups? It'll let you back up to floppy's, but after #40 with 2 days remaining I gave up. I ran out of determination after that. Any suggestions? I've been creating many system restore points, and I emailed Microsoft about their horrible oversight with the backup up utility. I stated that practicality was not on their list of concerns. I'm going to look into partitioning. K
  6. Isn't it just as easy to to Run > Msconfig > click startup tab, and uncheck the items that you don't want to startup every time that you boot? K
  7. I told my roommate to download Ad-Aware and she downloaded something different than mine (and it was free). It was also less effective than my program. Maybe it wasn't Lavasoft. Hmmm. I would like to add to the trusted download sites the following www.majorgeeks.com (a favorite) www.download.com GOOD TIMES!!! K
  8. I feel your pain. I was there not too long ago. Lokoike mentioned a startup floppy disk, and I agree with him. Microsoft's website has 2 options that I know of, but you'll need to look around to find them. You can download a boot disk that will reinstall your D drive so that you can continue with CD's. In addition, you can download setup disks (it requires 6 for XP) that might get you going. Why can't you boot in safe mode? Restart your computer, and immediately begin pressing F8 over and over until the Command Prompt appears (hit F8 ~1X every second or so). Keep us posted. Don't give up until you've tried absolutely everything. That reminds me... I had the same problem with "return to previous state that worked", it didn't work for me either. Are there any system restore points that you could use, or did that not work either (it didn't work for me). Good Luck!! Sorry K

    Foxit Reader

I have a question about Foxit that I hope someone can answer for me. I downloaded Foxit today, and unistalled Adobe. I don't understand the instructions that Foxit gives to make it the default PDF reader. Will it automatically become the default PDF reader because Adobe is gone? Thank You!! K
  10. Yes, that is one of the many possible associations with Dr. Watson. It's worth keeping an eye on it every so often. K
  11. I have a fairly old computer with a 32-bit processor. According to Microsoft's website I need a 64-bit platform that required a specific driver that I (of course) do not have. I won't be doing any drastic changes soon because school just started. Although, my long term plan is to figure out how to change my processor. Is that even possible? FROM HERE ON OUT I WILL BACK UP ON A REGULAR BASIS!!! K
  12. You were correct XP Home $209. I did get the XP Professional SP2 & XP Professional x64 Edition for a total of $63. A week with ME was a week too long. Unfortunately I can't install Professional x64 Edition, not sure why. I'm a fan of freeware myself. K
  13. You can google "Dr. Watson", and get a lot of information. Dr. Watson for Windows starts automatically when a program error occurs. You can configure Dr. Watson: Run > drwtsn32 > click OK. It seems like CCleaner is working out for you now. As for Dr. Watson it isn't really a big deal. I personally uncheck "Crash Dump File" as my only configuration. Supposedly, the public can access your information that is dumped into that file. But, I do stress "supposedly". There is a lot of information on the topic. K
  14. Oh, I didn't mean to say XP Home. I thought that I said XP. I'm not familiar with Home. I've only used Professional SP2. For the most part software is 50% discounted from retail prices. It's odd that you saw Home listed for $209.95. A Tech Support guy from UMSL told me that it would be a total of $100.00. Sorry. K
  15. I'll let you know on Friday. I'll be on campus that day. You may even be able to look on the website (www.umsl.edu). K Once you're on UMSL's website do a search for 'bookstore'. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Thank you. I'll keep that in mind. K
  16. Have you tried doing a search within Microsoft's website? There could be some good ones that popup. You definitely do need more than XP's firewall. I'm not in total agreement with the router firewall suggestion. I personally have XP firewall, router firewall, and Norton firewall. The router firewall is expensive, but it's worth it IF you plan on networking at some point. Good Luck!! K
  17. Everyone is giving you good advice. Always remember that it is very important what site is being used to download programs. It's worth the time to investigate a little bit to determine if you can trust a site or not for downloads. Try Adaware's site or downloads. Also, it has been my experience the Adaware SE Personal is the best. Good Luck! K
  18. Dude, you got ripped off. I see that you're from Illinois. I'm in Missouri. I go to University of Missouri (UMSL). In the student bookstore it's $100 total for everything for Windows XP. I would like to point this out to everyone. University bookstores have great discount prices for everything. They don't care if you're a student or not. They don't even check. FYI. K P.S. I am so sad with ME, BUT "MY COMPUTER IS WORKING"!!! Happy Dance! Good Times! Thank you. Did you come across any problems/glitches that you didn't forsee? K
  19. How do you know that it didn't work? Did you get an error message or something? Can you at least download Spyware Blaster for a little extra something if you can't get another firewall? The link for Spyware Blaster is in the Software forum under freeware. I am interested why your router firewall would be interfering with an additional firewall. I use a Lynksys router, and D-link ethernet/PCI cards. No problems here. K
  20. Do you think that the router firewall is secure enough by itself? I have the router firewall, XP firewall, and Norton's firewall. I've heard many different opinions about the security of different firewalls? Is there a way to know for sure? K What's your secret? Why don't you find them necessary? Are you a MAC user? K I installed Outpost on my roommate's computer because she didn't have one besides the router's firewall. It's good because it's added security (and of course free) But it's kind of annoying? When does it stop popping up to ask if a program can access the internet? K
  21. Have you considered adding more memory to your computer? About 6 weeks ago I added memory cards to my computer, and it is AWESOME!!! Definitely worth checking in to. It's so easy that a novice like myself accomplished the task in 10 minutes. I hope that you try it!! K
  22. YEA!!! I have a computer again!! I'm so excited I wish that we all could go out for Happy Hour and celebrate. To make a long story short: I couldn't retreive my XP installation disks from ex-boyfriend; had to reinstall my old ME program; going to buy new XP cd next week; then a friend of a friend (IT guy) is going to format for me, and show me how to make backups of everything (including regedit). So, the solution to my problem has been found. Hope to see you all on the discussion board under better circumstances. Good Times!! Great program!! K Thanks again to you all for your help and support. Much appreciated. Hasta Luego! K
  23. I understand your concern. I agree with Andavari. If you do want to venture more with the program definately make a back up of everything first, ESPECIALLY regedit(registry). Also create a system restore point on your computer. I recently ran the program for my first time, and every box was checked. After that I was screwed because I didn't have backups. When it comes to your baby (computer), it's better to be safe than sorry. If something in your registry gets erased, but you need that key to run an installed program your computer won't recognize the program without the key. At least that is my understanding at this point. THE BEST ADVICE EVER IS...BACK IT UP ON A REGULAR BASIS!!! If you take safety procautions, any negative changes don't have to be permenant. Good Luck!! K
  24. Thank you! Those are very good instructions. I'll be giving it a shot. I'll keep you all updated!! K
