  1. uh ..okay. so is it ok for the backup to appear as a .txt (as mine does also) and open it w/ reg edit if it needs to be restored. or is there an inherent problem with it appearing as a .txt

Something is wrong. It should save as a .reg file. When you save the backup can you change the file type/file extension?

  2. Windows ME dont have any *real* handling of user profiles and all accouns run with full privileges on the computer.

If you have Windows 2000 or XP you can use have restricted accounts for your kids that dont have all privilegies which can prevent them from accidently doing damage to the computer.

Thanks for correcting me. I didn't know that. :D

  3. I followed earlier suggestions, and allowed CCleaner to remove Hotfix uninstallers

The folder $hf_mig$ no longer shows up when I search

If (as noted in posts below) I need to re-install this, please advise how/where to download

    Thx for all help

The folder will recreate itself the next time you install a hotfix.

  4. Thanks for your help so far. I'll try your suggestions.

    It's Windows ME.

You have a great day, too!

Do you have a ME Installation CD, or a Restoration CD? How much RAM does it have?

  5. For anyone wondering if they're hotfixes are actually installed correctly visit Microsoft Update and click the link Review your update history. Anything with a failed-sm.gif or status_failed.gif on it should be re-downloaded and re-installed. BTW that's the only way you'll find out if you're missing a hotfix when Microsoft Update doesn't detect them.

  6. Hi!

"Savvy", great word. :) Follow Eldmannen's instructions for installing CCleaner on the computer.

If your kids are not old enough to use a registry cleaner (CCleaner), then right click the installer and choose run as. Tick Aministrator, then run CCleaner. Also, DO NOT check the "Hotfix Uninstallers" box, it has a bug.

    What OS is it?

    Have a great day!

    K :D

  7. Hmm... that is very strange...

I'm trying to think of any way on Earth that this Flash Mind Reader could be so amazingly accurate. I ran it 10 times in a row, and it only showed me the wrong symbol once. I would be amazed if it had maybe 50% accuracy, but 90%?!

There must be some kind of logical sequence of numbers that the human brain thinks in or something, cause I can't think of any other way that this thing could be so accurate. I would be interested in seeing the code for this app...

    Nifty find, hazelnut. :)

If one was wrong then you did your math wrong once. If you do your math correctly the picture will be right every time. And you don't need to stare/concentrate on the picture. Just look at it, the click the ball, and it will be a match.

  8. All reference to mine have gone as well. Tried to update from MS site but it says my PC is up to date. So guess it has only removed their references not the programs

Does it say that you're up to date because those installations are recorded in your update history? :(

There is a bug in the "hotfix uninstaller". You should not use that option.

    Read Me

(I thought that it was fixed, but it isn't.)

  9. That's pretty cool. It tripped me out at first. :D

But there is a trick (kinda).

The way that you are supposed to calculate the numbers makes only 10 possible solutions. Therefore, no matter what number you choose your total will be 1 out of 10 possibilities. They get lucky. :D But it's still fun.

    Any number between 90 to 99 will = 81

    80 to 89 = 72

    70 to 79 = 63

    60 to 69 = 54

    50 to 59 = 45

    40 to 49 = 36

    30 to 39 = 27

    20 to 29 = 18

    10 to 19 = 9

    0 to 9 = 0

All of these 10 possibilities have the same picture. ; )

  10. You can check this out for now. I'm looking up more information on it right now.

Realtek Configs & Settings That link is dead, disregard.

Do you have the updated driver? http://w3serv.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dla...8&Software=True

"We offer two different types of audio drivers for MS Windows OSes. The WDM driver is for Win98SE or later versions and the VXD driver is for Win98/95. Recommended by MS, the WDM driver had better not be used on Win98. That is why we normally use the VXD driver for Win98 (4.10.1998). If you don't encounter any problems using the WDM driver with Win98, you can keep on with it.

For some reasons, we do not support DirectSound directly in the VXD driver. We just have the DirectSound software emulation layer do it for us. I think that is why you have delay in sounds in DirectSound games. We suggest you to upgrade your OS to Win98SE or later versions. Our WDM driver has more powerful features, such as EAX support, and it will support DirectSound better than the VXD driver.

Our AC'97 CODECs support the SPDIF function on P4B with the WDM driver. With limitation of the MS kernel driver, the Win98SE cannot support SPDIF with AC-3 format without MS QFE269601 installed on Win98SE. If you want to play AC-3 format under Win98SE, QFE269601 should be installed. If you want to play AC-3 format under Win2000, service pack 2 should be installed. WinMe and WinXP can support AC-3 format without any patch files from MS. For Wave (PCM) format, all Windows OSes can be played with the WDM driver."

Okay, so you should have an AC97 audio configuration utility. Maybe it's located in Sound Effect Manager, but I'm not sure. After installing the new drivers go to the Control Panel open up "Sounds and Audio Devices" and

check the setting under "Volume," "Audio," and "Voice" tabs. The Volume menu has settings for "Device Volume" and "Speaker Settings." Click the "advanced" button under device volume and unmute everything then close. Click the "advanced" button under speaker settings and select "monitor stereo speakers" (or whatever is appropriate) and click ok. After checking settings under the Audio and Voice tabs click ok to close the properties menu. Then check the configuration in the audio utility and if there is a mixer loading in the

system tray (notification area) check those properties also.

Always click apply and/or save settings

  11. I hate to burst your bubble, but the hotfixes should show up in add/remove programs.

I just ran CCleaner (I ticked hotfix uninstaller), and my hotfixes are still listed in add/remove programs. You should uninstall/reinstall, download either the slim or basic version. Something is funky.

  12. Hi, I have DirectX version 9c and downloaded the Feb update that krit suggested too. I tried again clicking apply then OK and it still resets to full acceleration after restarting. I can't find any settings anywhere else to stop this happening

I know that this may sound silly, but will you post a screen shot of your control panel?

  13. Hazelnut, thank you for the reply, I should have made it clearer, if the ULR is in the right hand panel as you say is easy, but how do you get it in the left hand panel. Sometimes it goes there if you have just visited a site but not always.

Highlight the URL that you want to move > then click the arrow (in the middle) to move it to the other side. There are 2 arrows: 1 points to the left, and 1 points to the right.

    Does that answer your question?

  14. I'm having the same issue. I tried this (note it's spelled "regsvr32", not "regsrv32"), but it's still giving the error. I can launch it fine in a VM which is similarly configured (XP SP2, Symantec Antivirus).

Download DAF. Scroll down the page, and download the Full Version.

    1. Once installed, open DAF and click Tools > Repair Permissions > click Go > then reboot.

    2. Open DAF again > tick all of the boxes in the "Registration Center" > click Go > Reboot.

    Did this work?

  15. I have lost the patience to try to install Itunes and my daughter's IPOD unto my PC. I have in XP SP2 PC which is clogged itunes and Ipods directories which cannot be removed by CCleaner or any other software for that matter. From the add and remove programs I get a "cannot delete MSI INstalller " messsage every timeI try to get CCleaner to remove IPOD UPDATER 2004-07-15

I know this is maybe not the right place to post this but the bug is still that CCleaner cannotremove MIS files...

I did try to get windows to remove the msi installer but that obviously also failed...

THnaks for anyone patient enough to give me a solution that works... pleasedont' refer me to apple I followed all their suggestions and they JUST don't work..!

    frustratd dad

    Hi Frustrated Dad, :(

Do this to ensure that you're system files are not corrupted. Have your installation disk handy, but don't insert it yet.

start > run > (type) sfc /scannow (there is a space after sfc)

    when prompted insert your cd

when the process is finished reboot your computer

Now download DAF. Scroll down, and download the full version.

After installing open DAF > (click) Tools > (click) Repair Permissions > (click) Go > reboot

Let us know if you have fixed your problem, and what the solution is so that others can use this as a reference. :D

  16. You should clarify the OS's that CCleaner is compatible with. I only watched the first video, but you only talked about Windows XP.

What operating systems does CCleaner work with?

Fully tried and tested with Windows 95/98/NT4/ME/2000/XP/2003.

It's also fully compatible with XP Service Pack 2.

(There is no Mac or Unix version.)

  17. Thanks for your help but I don't have an environmental audio section in control panel>sounds and audio :( (I'm on WinXP Home SP2 if that makes any difference)

I've been giving you instructions using XP Pro SP2. I don't know if it makes a difference, but lokoike will know because he used Home until a few months ago.

Do you have DirectX 9.0c? It's the feb update. If not you can download here.

Also, how many Sound tabs do you have in DirectX. Are there 2?

What audio software are you using? You should be able to open it from all programs, and make adjustments. ex. SoundBlaster Live

  18. Tried that, it still resets to full acceleration after restarting :(

Control Panel > Audio > Environmental Audio > Options > check "Always save changes"

    That might work...

  19. no because its not active x. That is what sites like winupdate use.

All this really lets you do is download stuff from the MS site that requires the genuine advantage tool.

But I'll still get updates through auto updates, right?

  20. Do you mean to tell me there are cheaters out there who don't have a valid key? I am taken aback.

Gunner...(my first friend here) ;) ...of course there aren't those who don't have a valid key. How could you purpose such a preposterous idea? "E" is just pullin' our chains (right E? ;) )

    Good Times - K

  21. yeah its been around a few months now. I didnt bother getting it yet because to be honest I dont download anything from MS without IE. I usually get my DL's and win updates at the same time. :D

So I can get rid of the IE tab?

I downloaded without it, and updates are auto...happy days for K! :D

Keep in the loop RR! ;)

EDIT: Keep ME in the loop! ; )
