  1. I called a computer guru mate of mine and here's a possible fix:

In Registry Editor (Start > Run... > regedit), navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon. Look for 'Name: Userinit'. In that, you will see 'Data: %system32%\wsaupdater.exe,'. Note that %system32% represents the path to the System32 folder. For example, if the path is C:\Windows\System32, then the data would be: 'C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe,'

Instead of wsaupdater.exe, the data should contain userinit.exe, (including the comma at the end). Using the example above, the data should now read: C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe. Make the change accordingly; close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer. "

The registry problem that you are referring to is from malware on your computer. If your registry key does say 'C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe,' you should post a hijack this log in the HJT thread, and get your computer cleaned. I found what you are talking about all over the place, and it is specifically due to malware. :(

  2. You missed the point of my cryptic post. What I was saying is they don't know as much as they proclaim or elude to know. It's in the know!

Oh! I think it's the opposite. The more that they learn, the more that they understand how much they don't know. My professor's are very good at saying "We don't know", we meaning science.

  3. Display Properties menu, Appearance tab: the Effects button not working after running ccleaner.

I am able to invoke the Advanced button on this tab.

I am running winXP Pro-SP2 and ccleaner v1.27, with the defaults checked for cleaner and issues.

    Hi Lab, and Welcome!

Have you tried rebooting your computer? I have to admit that's very odd. <_<

Hopefully someone else can be of more assistance.

  4. The problem is within the default CCleaner setup under Advanced and has been that way for over a year now. If it's causing the exact same problem to multiple users I would highly suspect it's a bug.

Perhaps (not verified) CCleaner is removing the whole registry entry not just the settings which is causing this.

I'm not so sure about that anymore Andavari. I ran CCleaner multiple times with everything under Advanced checked, and my QL bar will not go away. If I can't replicate the problem by using CCleaner, then how is CCleaner the culprit?

I had that problem with version 1.26, but I haven't been able to reproduce it 1.27. <_<

hmmmmmmm. Now I'm even more curious as to what's going on. Will a sfc /scannow fix the problem? (Nevermind, I'll look it up now)

  5. When I start up my XP computer I get a few messages that has squares and says something like this name in the registry doesnt point to anything. I thought CCleaner would fix this but it doesn't. What could be the problem in the registry that CC is not fixing? Thank you, Chris.

Because CCleaner doesn't add information to your registry, it only removes things from your registry. What is the name in the registry that doesn't point to anything?

    Hello, and Welcome! :D

  6. Both were unchecked.

It all started with CCleaner though.

Could the problem be because of winapp2.ini ? It hasn't been updated in ages.

I doubt it because I don't have the problems that you're having.

I have also tried multiple things to replicate your problem, and haven't been able to do so. (I actually tried to mess it up, but it's still not producing any problems like yours). Sorry that I can't be more helpful. :(

  7. So, i ment r u the maker of CCLEANER?

Also, i want to help u all on your help. I really appreciate it.

MrG is the author of CCleaner. Follow my instructions in the PM that I sent you.

Also don't worry about the sfc /scannow for now. You hopefully won't need to do it. ;)

  8. 1. there are no checks in the advanced settings. So hotfix is not checked.

    2. I close Ccleaner by going to the "x" in the upper right corner.

    3. I went to RUN and typed in msconfig and took the check out of the startup and

rebooted and ran Ccleaner. No change that I could see.

    4. If I get the condition where I analyze and CCleaner runs for quite a time and comes

up with over 600M of items, I will try to get a screen shot of it.

    Thanks for all your help.

    JPS

Don't use msconfig for this. In CCleaner uncheck "run CCleaner when computer starts", and "automatically check for updates to CCleaner".

I agree with cde. Make sure that other programs are not running. You may have apps running in the background or something. Check your Task Manager in the Applications Tab, and end any running processes.

If none of these suggestions work, then try it in Safe Mode, and let us know what happens.

  9. Help me, i'm desperate!!!

I reinstalled my computer this night and i installed the newest version of this extraordinary program i use for months now but it sais "run time error '0'" and won't load!!! Just little before i wanted to uninstall Registry Mechanic program and it asked me if i want to delete some .dll file i think and it warned me that there might be some other programs connected with it and i press YES TO ALL accidentally, i don't know if that related with the problem but i think it is!

Please help me how to get it work!!!

I can't live without this program!!!

I just installed, and uninstalled Registry Mechanic to see what you were talking about. The only thing that you deleted was STKIT432.dll and is distributed with Visual Basic 4. I'm going to read DjLizard's post before saying anything else (don't want to say something 2 times ;) ).

I have an installation CD, of course. But i don't know what is sfc/scannow.

My WinXP is all fresh and new and i wanted to say to you that this error has nothing to do with the drivers becouse i installed them all, DirectX i haven't installed yet if it is is not integrated in SP2, and i don't know what is VB and .NET framework but i reinstalled the XP before too without these programs and everything was great!

I will try what u said as soon as i get home.

Are u the maker of this program?

sfc /scannow is a tool within windows that will replace missing files. Everything that I suggested DirectX, VB, etc., are already integrated with the installation, but they need to be updated. After a re-install all of these programs will be outdated, and you have to update them manually. Your runtime error is probably VB. If you don't update everthing you will run into odd problems in the future.

Am I the maker of what program?

@ Ogi - The link that DjLizard posted is the VB link that you need to download and install. :D

  10. Do you have an installation CD? You can do a sfc /scannow.

OS is WinXP proffesional SP2. What do u mean what program, CCleaner of course :) neither one version works, its just that they turn out the different error depending on the version (i used before v1.23 and last night i downloaded v1.27 and the error is the same).

After it turn out an error it asks me whether i want to send a notification to the Microsoft so i guess i need some file! Probably some i accedentally deleted in the way i described. I red that report, and i there was like about 30 modules, every module is one DLL file, and it seems that i don't have 3 of them in System32 dir (maybe they are in some other dir?): lang-033.dll, msvcrt.dll, mousehook.dll.

I am not at home now but as soon as i get there i will let u know about that file u asked me about! Thank u very much for trying to help!

P.S. Now i saw that the file u ask me about is an active X component and i think that some version of the program turn out some active X error but i am not sure.

Yeah it becomes unregistered when installing and uninstalling lots of software. If it is there type REGSVR32 MSCOMCTL.OCX in the run box and click okay. Reboot after registering it, and if you're not the administrator of the computer you won't be able to fix any of these problems (FYI). ;)

    It's a Microsoft Library.

  11. Yes! Hijacked threads are truly a beautiful thing!

In honor of this momentous three-way hijacking, I will change my signature yet again!

That explains why you've been in your CP for such a long time!

(I am such a dork, but I'm laughing)

Many professors know so much they know nothing at all.

That is for damn sure. Professor's that know too much are usually bad teachers.

Don't forget to add some invisible text that reads: Send Andavari lots of money!

    And Krit a DVD-RW drive! ;)

  12. lolololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololol!

    You were joking, weren't you?

    Nope!

  13. What!

Are you trying to tell me that something as trivial as your education takes precedence over your computer?!! Why K, I thought more highly of you than that! :P

j/k Hope they go well! Tests FTL...

FTL??? The neuroscience test will be fun, but not philosophy........

  14. Luckily, you would have a hard time finding a DVD burner that doesn't support both - and + disks! Support for both types of media is practically a standard, as is support for dual layer (DL) DVDs. The only format that isn't supported by many burners is DVD-RAM. The format never really took off, and if you find a burner that doesn't support it, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

The typical new DVD burner writes most formats at 16x, supports -, +, and DL, and will probably set you back anywhere from $30-100, depending on what company you buy from. But in the $50 range, you will find tons of excellent DVD burners full of features that will last you a long time, so expect to spend about that much.

EDIT: Here are some drives you can look at that may fit your needs. They are all DVD burners in the $30-75 range, both PATA and SATA.

Also, this particular site (Newegg.com) is great for any computer hardware. Their prices are good, they deliver fast, and they don't sell junk. I've built several computers using only parts from their site, and have no complaints.

Okay, thanks. I'll look into it on Friday. I have a lot of tests this week. :P

  15. I don't think it's a good idea to install the $hf_mig$ folder from another Windows installation. The $hf_mig$ folder should contain all hotfixes and service packs installed on that specific system, but only those that are actually installed.

Better restore it from the latest system backup.

He doesn't have a system backup which is his problem. And the $hf_mig$ folder is a cache of the hotfixes so each foler is labeled KBXX... You easily can run a search to see if the cache is something that you already have a hotfix for. If not don't use it. But I had too many problems trying to get the folder to him, and didn't have time to keep working on it.

I suggested that he do a repair installation, but he said that it will mess up his system. I don't know how a repair installation messes up your system. I did a repair installation a week or 2 ago, and everything is fine on my computer plus MS reinstalled all of my hotfix's so I have a new $hf_mig$ folder.
