  1. From one who uses Windows, Linux & OSX (I own and use each OS at least once per week - OSX used on a PowerBook when away from my home office) I maintain that both Windows and OSX require antivirus software (for OSX I use ClamXav which is still free at this stage BUT not all that great) as I have always considered that sooner or later OSX will get hit. Check this one out: Mac Security Site"]Mac Security Site[/url] I do not see Linux being a target in the short term (to many variations) but those mongrels that create viruses etc. are out there with nothing better to do with their time. Personally my No.1 choice is Windows (XP Pro better than Windows 7, but I use both) No.2 is Ubuntu (the latest version) then OSX bringing up the rear. I was forced into all 3 OS's when I was working full time, as I spent many years selling/supporting the Graphics Design / Print-Publishing Industry (magazines & newspapers) where Mac is still big, No. 1, Windows No.2 and Linux used as Servers, why? I really am not sure.........I just had to grin and bear it.
  2. Better late than never..........a watchful desktop
  3. Great news MrG, as a G4 OSX user (PowerBook for traveling) you have captured my interest big time. Keep up the good work.

    Ubuntu 11

Thanks Ishi, due to me spending a lot of time getting ready for my 4,000Klm road trip in July I have not even turned my Ubuntu 10.10 box on, also playing with a new toy an 5 year old G4 PowerBook (OSX 10.4.11), so NOW I have fired up the Ubuntu and the "Upgrade to Version 11.04" dialogue box has popped up and we are downloading @ 50 to 105kb/s.............so thank you for the heads-up. I shall spend some time with 11.04 this weekend and report back.
  5. I heard that Login123..............I am guessing that down here it would be at 45? as those who know me maintain that I have unusual "slant" on life. Seriously, if I get time over the Easter break I may just try it myself however I am well happy with the last Ubuntu I built several months ago running solo on a 6 year old P4 with heaps of grunt, damm thing fly's like a bird. Happy and Safe Easter to all.
  6. Dammed crazy if you ask me............I can think of better things to spend $595.00 dollars on.
  7. WELCOME onboard from Tasmania - Australia....................85 in a couple of months, there's hope for me yet....................maybe we should start an "Over 60's club". If so your the President, I for one look forward to your advice on many matters. Kind Regards Tasgandy
  8. It's April tasting time down here in Tassie.............well it's always tasting time these days.
  9. Warlock, it is bad enough for those who do not know anyone involved in this great tragedy, just watching and listening the the sad news reports, one can only offer our prayers & thoughts to those involved and those who are associated/related/friends with those that have suffered. Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Radiation - is bad enough, but for those who managed to survive such horrors appear to now are suffering from hunger. This to me is very hard to understand, as I always thought of Japan as an affluent cashed up country. However all the detailed news reports I have seen today (Sunday 20th March) are reporting that most people sheltering in Government centers are only given 1 bowl of rice per day to eat. On top of this problem it's bloody winter time with the temp dropping down to minus 5 to minus 10 at night. It is truly a very sad time.
  10. Now thats CUTE DennisD
  11. Corona.....I'm not sure what your comment means........."Gascandy" are you referring to me having to use a heap of petrol? if so - you are correct, 4000 klm @ average 2 & 4 wheel work, about 10 ltrs per 100 klm's @ $1.45 per ltr....lots of $$$. a small price to pay for seeing our great country.
  12. Hazelnut I am not leaving till July 14th when I am due to drive to Devonport (Tasmania) which is where the Spirit of Tasmania (Vehicular Ferry) leaves from and docks in the Port of Melbourne (Australia mainland). I then will head up to a country town called Swan Hill which is located on the banks of the Murray River, some 350Klm North west of Melbourne. I shall commence my "wandering " there by spending some 3 to 4 days fishing for Murray Cod. Now concentrating on saving $$ from my pension towards the total cost of the trip, about 3 weeks away from my home State of Tasmania. In all I plan on covering about 4,000 Klm during the 24 days away and plan to take my G4 power Mac with me. For those interested: X-Trail 2005 Ti Model, 110,000klm, 5 speed manual, am/fm Radio, CD, DVD player, TV 7" LCD screen, 6" driving lights, LED reversing light, electric sun roof, roof racks, 6.5" Mag wheels, Hankook DynaPro tyres (looking to fit AT's before trip re lots of gravel roads to cover) will carry 2 spare tyres. Coleman 49ltr Xtreme cooler + gas stove, light etc. large size St John first aid kit.
  13. Very enjoyable.....thanks Kroozer.............I left a piece for you.
  14. Well folks now I feel different.............officially a pensioner, recieving the aged pension every fortnight. HOWEVER it stops there.....just because I have turned 65 years of age, does not mean I have given up. Exactly the opposite, lookout folks, I have now got my 2nd wind (as they say).........looking forward to wandering around this great country of AUS in my Nissan X-trail 2005 Ti 5 speed manual (with all the fruit) with my fishing rod and gas stove. (and beer/wine) Volunteering 3 days a week at an aged care home certainly keeps my young............I get to help those who are not as fortunate as I, as I enjoy reasonable health, well I do now since I commenced volunteering.
  15. Finally I have managed to organise my March desktop...............Been busy - winding it all up...........I've left the office.............retired from "paid" work...........now volunteering full time (well 3 days per week)........just turned 65 years young.............looking forward steering my X-Trail around the bush tracks of Aus.
  16. Well done DennisD......you deserve the "fruits" of your labour
  17. Yeah Yeah DennisD, the colours of the butterfly's wings are excellent!!!!!!
  18. Gail our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of need. Kind Regards Tasgandy
  19. Well I finally decided to turn my "test" Windows 7 PC off and install Win7 as my "Normal" every day PC (I considered 6 months trial long enough)......so this is my first Win7 (every day working PC) desktop, not really startling......but it took me long enough to build the $$^#$#$#@^ thing. I must admit that I did keep the seperate XP 500GB Sata II HD sitting in the wings just incase the ship hits the fan, (with the necessary Macrium Reflect backup's of course). PS: I think we here in Aus, Queensland in particular, have had enough of the "strange/unusual weather"......bloody floods, cyclones.....what's next????? Floods in Victoria & New South Wales and fires in Western Australia. We here in Tasmania only suffered flooding in 3 East Coast towns with about $100 million dollars of road damage.....sorry to waffle on folks.
  20. Great bit of software - many thanks Hazelnut. Even though it is listed as "trial" once registered this is a FULL copy with an expiry time of 365 days..........installation and testing.............all great. Thanks once again Hazelnut.
  21. Happy New Year DennisD.......great to see you back on deck. My opening 2011 Desktop is the "WINDOWS 8" wallpaper, give me a break.........I'm still getting on top of Win 7.....AH the MS marketing push.
  22. Thanks once again MrG........a great & valuable piece of software...........and by the way Squire..... Merry Christmas & a Happy Hew Year
  23. Well now Andavari this is an example of "what the ???" and you are correct, Softpedia lists bitRipper 1.31 as shareware @ $29.95 HOWEVER Softonic lists bitRipper 1.31 as FREE.............go figure....see attached.
  24. A BIG MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR to EVERYONE from the old fellow way down South in Tasmania..............I hope everyone has a restful, joyous, safe, don't drink-n-drive time over the rest of 2010 and return in 2011 full of energy and ready to take on the challenges of the new Year.
  25. OK folks here is my Ubuntu December/Christmas desktop (still playing & experimenting with Ubuntu...damn it shuts down fast)
