I do apologise my mistake. I was offering suggestions but I needed more info. For the third time you haven't said what and which version. Well if you don't want help from a fellow Win98 user then you're on your own.
  2. Yes they do use Mem.exe. I've never have mem problems with Win98SE though. What it all comes down to with WinNT is there is that much crap running in the background which is not normally needed. I would recommend Process Explorer 11.33 where you can check how much system resources each app it using and you can End Task it.

Ok point taken Hazel. Thats my experience of a lot of women. Sorry maineline.

Judging by your name and how you write I'm assuming your a woman. Don't get me wrong I've nothing against woman its just that they don't answer questions when asked. How did you disable the processes? I asked you to post a list of all the processes running in Task Manager. Going back to my previous comment a typical woman never answers a question. CC is great for disabling processes on startup. It appears you have enough RAM for Win98 so I would just concentrate on removing the processes you don't need. Every process that is running is using system resources, memory. The fact that you haven't done a rebuild for 11 years says that there is a load of crap which CCleaner can't clean on your system. I will give you a little tip for running Win98. In all the years I've been running Win9x I've used RegClean which it an app that Microsoft made many moons ago for cleaning the registry on Win9x/ME. If you do a web search for RegClean 4.1a, build 7364.1 you will find many sites where you can download this excellent app. What is does is scan the registry for any errors. Any it finds and you click the Fix button it stores the things it removes from the registry into a *.reg file in the RegClean folder. This means if things don't work as they should do all you need to do is double-click the reg file to put the things back in the registry. Now I asked you which virus checker and version and spyware checker you are using. Again as a typical woman you don't answer the question. So it all comes back to you. Are you happy the Win98 when its running ok? If so then get Win98SE of eBay and do a format and rebuild and fresh install will work wonders. If you want more help on doing this process then let me know. If your not happy with Win98 then all I can suggest is you start saving your money for a newer computer. P.S. Where do you download CCleaner from? I always use FileHippo and I've never had a problem installing or running CC.
  5. Welcome to Piriform Foxxy. Why did you put them in there in the first place? Thinking I'll get them out later. Open Recuva and go to Options and tick the Deep scan. It will take a LOT longer to scan your drive but you maybe be lucky. Oh and don't save any files to your drive in the mean time as this will reduce the chances of a good recovery. If you find them then burn them to a CD so it won't happen again.

Ok I've installed CC 2.21.940 and it now works as it should do. It Analyzes correctly (not that I use this option) without crashing. I removed the tick from Adobe Flash Player (which I've always had unticked) and ALL cookies are deleted apart from the cookies to keep. Its now working as it should do so the old bugs appear to be fixed. So the new version does work on a normal Win98SE system maineline. Great job MrT, thanks you again.

Welcome to Piriform maineline. Well I've been using CC on Win98SE for the past 3 years without any major problems. There were problems when you Analyze with the last three versons but these may have been fixed in this new version. I've downloaded it but I haven't tried it yet. CC still supports Win98SE. I would start of with the obvious. Which virus checker and version are you using? Do you have any spyware checker installed? How many processes do you have running after a startup and you can see your desktop only? Do a Citrl+Alt+Del and make a note of the names in Task Manager. How much memeory do you have installed? Right-click on My Computer and read the bottom line. How many years is it since you last did a format and rebuild? Check the Windows folder date in Explorer.
  8. Welcome to Piriform Rob. Well Rob there are two ways to show data in a ListBox which is what the Cookies to Delete is. 1) add all files as they are found. 2) Use a Sorted method which sorts them alphabetically. CC use the option 2. You should learn to use the Cookies to Delete as and when. When you use a site that you need your cookies to be saved go into Options\Cookies find the site and move it to Cookies to Keep then you can forget about it. I down really see any advantage in sorting them company wise. Its just the same as file sort by date/modified in Explorer. Win98SE shows the newest files at the top all other versions show the newest at the bottom which I hate.
  9. Welcome to Piriform Kirk. Well these usernames and passwords are normally stored in the web sites cookies. So click on Options\Cookies and click on the cookies you want to keep in the Cookies to Delete box and hit the button to transfer them into the Cookies to Keep box. If you have a lot then hold the Ctrl key as you click on them then you can transfer them all in one go.
  10. Yes I know you can do that but why should you have to when CC does it for you. Thanks Dennis. I know computers can be finicky but what I can't understand is 2.18.878 cleans them perfectly with Adobe Flash Player not ticked but the later versions don't unless you tick Adobe Flash Player.
  11. Thank you Dennis. MrT pointed that out today when he was trying to sort out the cookies that aren't been deleted for me. Now I read somewhere on here (I think Davey pointed it out ) don't have the Adobe Flash Player checked as it can cause conflicts with flash. The strange thing is how come 2.18.878 cleans all cookies without Adobe Flash Player checked and 2.20.920 doesn't? I mean I haven't had Adobe Flash Player checked for over 12 months.
  12. Welcome to Piriform kkdjfl. As ishan_rulz says no they don't get put in the Recycle Bin they just get deleted. If you wanted to recover any of these files then I would suggest you use Recuva.
  13. Yes I've asked this before ishan_rulz but nothing as been changed. Also which browsers are being used. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showto...mp;#entry130089
  14. Well I don't have TweakUI installed so its nothing to do with that. Thanks MrRon. I can make my own app to remove the Run: files as its not rocket science but CC does it straight away on Win98 but not on WinXP.
  15. This post has been here for 6 days and 180 users have viewed it but no one has made a comment. Does this error only show on my WinXP SP2 at work? Edit: Update users and days.
  16. Yes thats happend with the last 3 versions of CC for me and I don't have my Adode Flash Player ticked. The last version that cleaned all none saved cookies was 2.18.878 thats what I'm running at the moment. This as been commented about in other topics. Providing your cookies to keep are listed in that ListBox then you will always keep those setting either in the registry or in the ini file if you use that option.
  17. Hi all. On Win98SE I clear the Run: files no problem. Run CC do a clean check the Run: dialog and they are all clear. On WinXP SP2 I do the same but I have to do a restart before they get cleaned. If I go into the registry and clean them myself then check the Run: dialog they are cleaned. How come you have to do a restart?
  18. Welcome to Piriform Sivy. Well I've never merged a reg file in my life, just double-click it. It should show the regedit.exe icon in Windows Explorer. If it doesn't and its a true *.reg file you need to associate this file extension to regedit.exe. If Disk4mat's suggestion doesn't work then if you right-click on this file and select Edit it will open with NotePad so you can see whats in the file. If anything isn't legable then it could be corrupt you would need to edit it and SaveAs another *.reg file name.
  19. I'm afraid you can't stop explorer.exe from running as already stated by Glenn its an essential part of the Windows operating system. It doesn't mean that Windows Explorer is running all the time in the background. Its the same with Systray.exe (Win9x/ME)and Mctray.exe (WinNT) thats the part around your clock that shows tasks and icons. As metalj has stated In Win98SE if you End Task Explorer.exe you will get the shutdown dialog box straight away.
  20. I'm afraid that isn't possible because I did a rebuild at the weekend so everything is fresh and I put Win98SE back because WinME is s**t. I do remember one site name that I haven't used for a few months http://monk.electude.com/ You need a username and password if you want to use the site, PM me. See my sig IE6.0 SP1 Thank you MrT.
  21. Welcome to Piriform IRA. It hasn't cleaned the cookies properly for the last 3 versions. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=21967 It does work with v2.18.878.
  22. Well the original question was asking about the Analyze button which wasn't working and I don't normally use it. After this post I gave it a try and it just locked up the computer. I had to press the reset to get it to respond. Now what I've noticed is with 2.19.889, 2.19.900 and 2.19.901 it doesn't clean the cookies. You start CC and click on Options - Cookies and you see the list to clean because all your saved cookies are in the cookies to keep listbox. You go back and do a clean. After the clean you go back to Options - Cookies and the same cookies are still there. If I put back 2.18.878 and click a clean then go back to Options - Cookies they are all gone. Thats my biggest problem and thats why I won't installed any newer versions until its fixed. My Windows\Temp folder always gets cleaned so I don't have a folder cleaning problem. I have posted another topic on this problem. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=21967 Thank you MrT.
  23. Yes we know Jean. Not that I'm bothered with the Analyse but it doesn't clean cookies properly, but I don't think any one is listening.
  24. Oh I've had another change ClamWin 0.95.1. A friend of mine recommended it as he builds servers and web sites. As regards the updates its only 5 days old so it only takes a few minutes to update whereas AVG 7.5.524 took two and half hours. And its free and it works on all Windows versions. Now I had Avast! on for a few weeks but I didn't actually like the way it did things. I thought I would do a full scan not that I have any virus's because the initial screen said no scan done. It started running so I thought I would make a brew I came back and it had stopped. Now every other scan I've used you would see a report of the number of files/folders scanned and the result with Avast! it shows nothing and it just closes. After the scan it still shows scan not done. Another thing is the updates take a long time to install. When the message says installing/updating so I which of my connection and a message comes back unable to connect to Avast! Now the beauty and simplicity of AVG it the progress bar shows the download and after it has finished it shows closing connection. It also shows the last time you downloaded the update and the last time you did a scan whether it was short or long. Its a pity we can't adjust the poll as no one yet has used ClamWin so you can add 1 for ClamWin and remove 1 of Grisoft.
  25. Yes I found DirectX9.0, 9.0b on other CD's I've burnt. I installed 9.0 and checked the version number then I installed 9.0b and it still had the same version number I did find DirectX 9.0c (Nov 07) on a flash drive that I had saved and that still show the same version number. I know the file sizes are a lot bigger 9.0 is 35MB and 9.0c is 92MB so there must be a lot of additional file in there. I've downloaded DirectX 9.0c (Mar 09) (FileHippo) again for the fifth time I will see what happens. Oh my WinME is s**t so Win98SE is going back.
