  1. Those two little links at the bottom of the posts generate several popups here on this xp system. Probably spam.
  2. Quite so. Though I have not had a corrupt recycle bin before, as far as i remember. The event viewer report is attached, I recognize the reference to AVI_Joiner.zip, but not much else. Must check to see if that file is still on the drive, not just now though. Too late.
  3. When I would click on the tray icon to "Safely Remove Hardware", the process would not complete. The first popup would, errr, pop up, but the second popup, where you select the drive to remove, would just freeze. Process Explorer would show rundll32 running, but the drive would not disconnect. No amount of process killing would free up the USB drive so that it would allow safe disconnection. So I would just shut off the computer, and when the light on the USB drive went out, then disconnect it. So it was never connected when the computer POSTed next time. edit: Now I remember that unlocker showed some problem with the recycle bin on the USB drive. Maybe that was what had the drive locked, not sure. I can post the results from the event viewer entry if it would be helpful.
  4. Hi, trium. win xp here is in a 45 gb partition. As you can see, the partition is only about 40 percent occupied. Many references say you can get by with a much smaller partititon. One advantage to a smaller partition is that you can do things to it quicker, like defragging, virus scanning, etc. The "My Documents" folder is about 5.46 gb. Most files are stored on J_ntfs or on an external USB HDD.
  5. This was a weirdo problem. I would have never guessed the cause, although a pro may have recognized it right away. Eventually it got fixed by accident. There is no substitute for sheer dumb luck, at least for me. Two or three weeks ago, this win xp system started having several problems at about the same time. - Going in to power saving mode became glitchy, seemed like the system didn't shut down completely. - Shutting down computer became glitchy, sometimes it asked to logoff, sometimes it would hang & require the power switch. - Disconnecting from the 'net was slow, and would not allow to reconnect without restarting the OS. - Disconnecting usb devices would hang or not respond, although rundll32 would start. I had visions of rootkits or keyloggers transmitting all my top secret data to some hostile foreign government. Before cryptolocker arrived, I pretty much left my 500 gb USB HDD connected all the time. After cryptolocker, I began to disconnect it except when needed. When disconnecting it became iffy, I would just unplug it after the computer shut down. Therefore it was never connected when the computer POSTed up. This time I left it connected during startup (by accident) and chkdsk ran automatically. Chkdsk found and fixed a number of problems, nicely described in the event viewer. Now everything seems OK. So the problems seem to have been caused by a removable USB HDD. I have no idea what caused the issues with that drive. Afaik, I had not run anything that would have caused them. But something like this might help explain why some posters think CCleaner trashed something that it didn't. If I had just run CCLeaner for the first time I would be inclined to blame it on that. For sure my knowledge is limited, but I have never read of such a thing, that is, shutdown or powersaver problems being caused by a removable USB HDD. Anybody seen this before?
  6. Yep, same here. Asus Amberine M. Just never paid attention before.
  7. I think the answer is some sort of instant restore software, designed so that when you get tagged, you can just put the computer back with a click or two and start over. There are several available, some free. I have used Powershadow for years, it has never failed. Sadly not available for win 7 or later. For later versions of windows, most of the really good ones cost money, but If I depended on a computer for anything important I would spend it. Edit: Above is based on the assumption that most folks don't know what is necessary to avoid foistware, and don't have time to learn. I know, you could say something like well, they should take the time, but that isn't realistic.
  8. +1 Don't even know if that is do-able, but if it is, would be good.
  9. The Piriform version works fne, tried it when this topic started and just now again. Easily done, just extract the zip file on the USB stick & run the exe, 32 or 64 bit. Whats wrong with that? Just saying, not arguing, whats wrong with the Piriform version?
  10. String. Although I'm sure you did something which you thought would uninstall CCleaner, it is unlikely that you did, for these reasons: 1. The picture in post 10 shows CCleaner running. 2. The highlighted line in the picture in post 10 shows a registry entry for CCleaner, (it shows that monitoring is disabled). 3. CCleaner64 is still in program files (post 16) ... is that file named CCleaner64.exe? 4. CCleaner will still run (post 16). None of these things would be true if you had used add/remove to uninstall CCleaner. When you uninstall ccleaner using add/remove, it is ALL gone except for (maybe) a registry entry saying that you don't want the google toolbar. For what it's worth, the picture is not "basically the same as the add/remove" as suggested in post 12. The highlighted line in your picture is in Tools > Startup. . . the CCleaner uninstaller is found in Tools > Uninstall. Nergal's post 11 tells how to find the CCleaner uninstaller, but it will not uninstall CCleaner itself. For that you just use the windows native uninstaller. Here is what you can do to answer Hazelnuts questions 1 and 2 in post 14 above, and maybe, just maybe, uninstall ccleaner. 1. Make sure CCleaner is not running, and there is no tray icon showing, 2. In windows, start add/remove programs, wait for the list to populate, and see if CCleaner is in the list. 2a. If it is, use add/remove to remove it. After that, double check to see if that ccleaner64 file is still present in program files. 2b. If CCleaner is not in the add/remove list, and you can still get it to run as you described above, someone else will have to tell you how (or whether) to reinstall it and uninstall it again to get a clean removal. I have not done this for win 7 or win 8. Also for what it's worth, a quick way to run the add/remove program in win xp and win 7 is to click on Start, Run, then type appwiz.cpl in the box that opens, then click OK. That should open up the add/remove panel. Post back how it goes. Hope you get it fixed.
  11. Oh dear. Run, mta run.
  12. Hi, mta. Ad-Aware is a legend. It is one of the software freebies that saved many of us for many years. I had forgotten about it, had not even thought about it for removing Vosteran. . .thanks for the reminder. Whaddaya know it is still free. A few years ago it was part of a pretty common security setup which included such freeware as - EZAntivirus . . . wow, that one goes way back. - XoftSpy SE Antispyware, - Ad-Aware, - SuperAntiSpyware, - Spybot S&D with the Tea Timer, one of Hazelnuts favorites if memory serves . - SpywareBlaster. - SpywareGuard, Those are all still going strong except SpywareGuard. The good ole days, eh? However, for removing Vosteran I was using was ADWCleaner, which targets toolbars & such. ADWCleaner is available at: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ I must say here that the one has to be careful with ADWCleaner. It selected for deletion a big folder containing some "fixer" type software. Don't know why, the folder contained no malware, but luckily it was backed up. You can review everything ADWCleaner targets before deleting anything. Ad-Aware is at: http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
  13. From time to time someone posts that CCleaner has stalled or frozen and won't continue. I just saw it for the first time on a win 7 laptop from which I was removing the Vosteran search addon from Firefox and IE. I used ADWCleaner. When it runs, it installs itself at C:\AdwCleaner, and anything it deletes goes to a "Quarantine" folder there. At the end of the removal, I deleted the files at C:\AdwCleaner, then ran CCleaner to clear out the leftovers. CCleaner stalled on that Quarantine folder in the recycle bin. In fact there were 2 or 3 files in the recycle bin that had been deleted from Quarantine, CCleaner wouldn't delete any of them. No processes were running that would have locked those files. I think CCleaner won't delete any files that are in use. For example, I run Firefox Portable in a sandbox, and CCleaner won't touch it while it is running, but will delete everything when it isn't running. But CCleaner doesn't stall in that case, it just leaves the active files untouched. As a solution, I just restored the quarantined files to their original location, used CCleaner to delete what was left in the recycle bin (this part worked fine), then deleted the quarantined files again, opened the recycle bin, and deleted them directly from there. Worked OK. And the point, for any who may still be awake: Those quarantined files must have had some special attribute that stopped CCleaner, but not normal deleting. It would be nice if there was some way for CCleaner to notify the user why it has stopped.
  14. If the recommendations above don't work you can try undoing the registry changes. Usually this only requires double clicking on the backup file, then answering yes to the prompt If you allowed CCleaner to make a backup before fixing selected registry issues, that backup file might still be available. To find it, search your system drive for a file with a name like this: cc_20150102_195241.reg The name shows the date & time the backup file was created. I found this one by searching for cc_*.reg. (in win xp) Even if this issue was not caused by CCleaner the above advices are worth a try.
  15. Hi, Mezzukron. Some info at: http://www.piriform.com/legal/software-license/ccleaner-professional
  16. Hello, Mohd Hazwan. As of this post time, your question has been viewed about 289 times. Please be assured that the members here are not just ignoring you. Probably the lack of replies means that no one knows enough to help, and they don't want to say something wrong that will cause more problems.
  17. Try this. Might help. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=42579&hl=
  18. The NORAD Santa Tracker is up and working. Note the "Gifts Delivered" counter at lower left. http://www.noradsanta.org/
  19. Yes, true. Each file must be treated separately. Thats why I put all those in the recycle bin, to give CCleaner a bit longer workout.
  20. If you overwrite with more than 1 pass it slows things down . . . could that be the issue? FYI . . . On win xp sp3, with Avast & SpywareBlaster, fairly fast computer, 6 or 8 years old. Just installed CCleaner ver 5.01.5075. Checked most of the boxes to clean. Analysis took 2.167 sec, showed 7.73 gb to clean. Ran CCleaner with these options: secure deletion, simple overwrite 1 pass, wipe cluster tips, wipe alternate data streams, Operation required 171.5 sec, 7.73 gb removed. So, CCleaner is actually fairly fast here. In addition to the "normal" files to clean, there were 2,184 acronis log files, and in the recycle bin were all the "lang" files from several apps. So, many individual small files.
  21. For My part, I wish Merry Christmas and may God bless. However you celebrate the holiday season, may you have peace, safety, and contentment. Above goes especially for Grinches and Grumpy Old Men (you know who you are ).
  22. Would be handy, and probably much easier for the moderators to manage. But this way tells you so much more about the poster.
  23. OK, some folks don't like the new GUI. A few cite functional issues, but most just don't like the GUI. But the level of agitation, though, ???. - one poster equates the new GUI with the general repression of personal preference in society. - one poster "went unhinged" when avast changed their GUI. - one poster speaks for the masses and uses the first person plural pronoun almost exclusively. - one poster fantasizes about slapping interface designers. - one poster has decided to buy a MAC. - one poster asserts that "It's burns my eyes to look at it." - one poster asserts that you get eye cancer by looking on this. Just plain silly.
  24. "Which really confirms the impression that Piriform has complete disregard for its customers." CCleaner free is fully functional except in regard to the monitoring stuff. I really don't understand the heat level generated by the new GUI. Obviously some folks don't like it, but why the hyperbole? Just use an older version. If you're a paying customer, try an older version with your license key. (Out on a limb here, never tried that myself.) Edit: no offense meant to any individual, group, just sayin' . . .
