  1. He only just arrived back in the UK yesterday, and here about 4.00pm today, UK time. He has Norton 2007 installed, and we`ve scanned with that. Tomorrow will copy over Superantispyware, Adaware, and do another full scan with Norton. I have a feeling though, after reading your replies, that the problem could possibly be due to the state of his hard drive. It`s quite a new laptop, but he recently copied over everything off his girlfriends pc. He ended up with his hard drive being so full (60gb) that he got the message "can`t defrag, not enough free space", or something like that. And using windows defrag tool (analyze) gives a very sorry looking picture. Badly fragmented. Will take a lot off there tomorrow, onto DVD, and then do a defrag, but what would be best for a severely fragmented drive? Windows own tool or maybe JKDefrag.
  2. There was a recent documentary on UK TV about the ever persistent "Conspiracy" theorists. Thankfully, the journalist doing the story pulled apart the theorists and their theories in his interviews. I would place these sad attention seekers in the same trash can as those that deny the "Holocaust".
  3. Thanks for the quick reply, which explains a lot, including why more than one svchost.exe can be running at the same time. But what could be causing this huge, intermittent use of processing power after boot up, and subsequently this long delay in being able to open any applications. Would be happy to provide any further info if required.
  4. My son has been having problems with his Laptop recently. Packard Bell running XP SP2. Computer boots up OK, but intermitently, when he trys to activate an application, nothing happens. This includes trying to open anything with windows explorer, including Task Manager. When Task Manager eventually opens, svchost.exe is shown to be using 99% of CPU resources. This lasts for up to a minute or more before applications begin to open normally. Any advice would be appreciated.

  6. Anyone remember the movie "Tron" with Jeff Bridges. If they made a modern version of that, it would be one hell of an action movie, with the amount of s**t flying around in cyber space these days. TRON: Would you believe it. My firewall has just blocked a malware probe from this: p4052-ipbf202niigatani.niigata.ocn.ne.jp Straight from the land of the rising sun.
  7. Interesting comparison of browser tools. There are alternatives to McAfee. Although not very many. Article:
  8. Intercoolers for PS3`s as well. I think you`re all mad. Would you buy a car knowing that you had to fit a cooling system afterwards? Out of your own pocket? Same principal.
  9. Favourite Concert has to be Andrea Bocelli with the Northern Symphony Orchestra. Being blind, and achieving what he has achieved? Amazing. To see and hear him live was just an unforgettable experience. Andrea Bocelli:
  10. Why on earth don`t they make the XBox 360 capable of running in perfect order straight out of the box? Personally, I think your`e mad (in the nicest possible way of course ), actually paying out good money for an extra bit of kit to make something perform properly or safely, or whatever the reason is. The gaming stores are bound to recommend buying one. More profit for them, and less chance of you bringing it back frazzled. Sorry mate, but if this thing runs so hot you are recommended to buy an Intercooler, it won`t be on my shopping list.
  11. Hi daniel126, and welcome to the forum. I think you are referring to the Address Bar, and I assume you are using Internet Explorer. First of all, make sure "Recently Typed URLs" is checked in CCleaner Settings > Internet Explorer. Secondly, close Internet Explorer before running CCleaner. CCleaner will not clear Explorers "recently typed URLs" in the Address Bar if you don`t close it first. That should solve your problem.
  12. Full article: Were some problems over here recently with XBox 360`s. May have just been the first models out, but it may be worth reading this CNet article about a couple of simple precautions. You guys may already know this, but just in case you didn`t.
  13. You`ve mentioned the essential ingredient of good songs. How many modern songs will you remember the lyric of, or even the tune, in 20yrs from now? Cat Stephens stuff was that long ago and more. U2, Floyd, Oasis etc, have songs that people will always remember.
  14. Honest opinion? (Although I`m not sure if the question is directed to me). I wouldn`t call that anything. Liked the intro, but couldn`t listen to that grunting. Beats me how anyone can. But I`ll not criticise anyone`s choice of listening. Each to their own.

I use Firefox, I`m flattered to be called a kiddie again, and I love cute pictures. Especially the one of the fox wrapped around the earth. Firefox and Opera etc., are thankfully there to enable people to have a choice about how they want to browse. And the important word here is choice. Having alternatives, as I`ve no doubt you are aware, prevents any one company from having a monopoly, and then just sitting on its backside, and doing nothing. The existence of Firefox and Opera etc., is directly responsible for Microsoft getting their finger out and trying to improve Internet Explorer. So as long as that cute red fox keeps hanging on to that earth, we`ll all be quids in.
  16. Thankfully, everyone`s musical tastes change over time. Always liked acoustic stuff. Singer/Songwriters. But too many wannabes jumping on that particular bandwagon, and the genre is just becoming diluted. Listening again to older U2 stuff. Got my old Eagles CD`s out. Pink Floyds "The Wall" has just had the dust wiped off it. Start digging into your collection, and you start finding good stuff you forgot you had. I`ve just found a couple of Roger Waters albums, and a couple of Cat Stephens I totally forgot about. Afraid "Indie Bands" is a description that used to mean something. Every band is an Indie Band now. Can`t see things changing any time quick, so dig into your collection, and listen with fresh ears.
  17. I still can`t keep up with ya Xana. But, there`s a new rental place just opened near me. It`s a bit different in that it`s open 24hrs. Completely automated. You get a credit card when you join, that both opens the door, and gets your DVD from a machine in the wall. Card is topped up with credit when you need it. Another great idea for flushing peoples jobs down the pan. Will see if they have any of the stuff you mention. Promise. Not sure rridgely. Are you talking about the Bruce Willis "Hostage" movie? I`ve got an original copy of that, (there`s a contradiction in terms, "Original Copy"), but been a while since I`ve watched it. Can`t remember. I`ll have to watch it again now.
  18. And if you want to remain that way, I would humbly suggest that you don`t show him this topic. Seriously though, I give anybody credit for having a go.
  19. Being a well brought up polite kind of guy, I must say thank you:- Anthony A, rridgely, Woody, Andavari, krit86lr, Humpty, New_Age. I will try all your suggestions. I may be gone some time.
  20. Had 2 infections using F-Secure, which came free with broadband. One of them was winantivirus2006, can`t remember the others name. Had to format as well. Had nothing since changing to Norton 2005, (which I`ve recently binned).
  21. No criticisim, but not my cup of tea.
