  1. Found this from an earlier link provided by Andavari re. Dr. Webs Antivirus plug-in for Firefox. The main article, dated Jan 21st, can be found here: Regards
  2. You must have guessed my response, and yes, it does pay sometimes to be left in blissful ignorance. But as I was saying before, so many influences on a recording, you just have to be realistic, and choose a sound system that gets as near as possible to your own preffered sound, quality of the recording not withstanding. And lets be honest, a poor system can cause a lot more damage, for want of a better word, than any compression methods. And no, this knowledge will not spoil my favourite CD. I`ve been into listening for a lot of years, and have changed my system over those years into something that gives me the sound I like. And I have a system now that still knocks me out every time I listen to it. And that`s what it`s really about in the end. But that didn`t mean spending a small fortune, because hi-fi equipment is one of the best examples of diminishing returns there is. And I`ve known guys who have spent lavishly on gear that would fill a stadium with sound, and then wondered why it don`t sound right in their front room. We could go on for ever with this, (and why not), Vinyl over CD, the toyed with idea years ago to introduce video tape for audio recording. This I read at the time would have introduced a new level of quality. I actually recorded a few albums onto video tape, and the sound was good. Only problem was finding what you wanted on a 3 or 4 hour tape. Definitely a non starter. Whats gonna come next ? Who knows, whatever it is, it ain`t gonna match the magic of being in a stadium with the bass vibrating through your body. Regards
  3. This has happened for me with Firefox. Not a problem, so never mentioned it. Only happens with "Show All" emoticon link. Opens window OK first time, but if pressed a second time, the "Show All" window disappears behind the "Reply" window. Weird. Regards
  4. What do you use ? Peanut Butter or Jelly! I approached this topic with trepidation. What on earth would the click of my mouse reveal. Some new form of.......: Nope we won`t go there. Now, this is where the "English" language morphs as it crosses the pond. If I put jelly in a sandwich, it would be pretty difficult to hold together, never mind eat. Jelly on this side of the water is something you eat with custard, or ice cream. It`s comes in various colours (colors), and is very wibbly wobbly. Putting it between two slices of bread would be a feat deserving of some form of award. Maybe free membership of the local asylum. Now, if you put Peanut Butter and Jam together, that would be quite acceptable. That raises the question, what do you do with Jam over your side. With my Jam/Jelly I like a nice strong cheese. Not a big Peanut Butter person. Always use the same knife for both. Does that make me uncouth, or just really stupid, for getting into this conversation in the first place. Love it, Regards
  5. Must admit, that was interesting, and I have heard that type of lacklustre sound, and put it down to poor engineering technique, or a poor engineer. That effect, I would imagine, is more prevalent, or more noticeable in heavy Metal, or any Rock music. The "pursuit of loudness" evidenced in that video, just seems to be a completely unnecessary tampering, for the sake of itself. It`s wrong that any music can be "doctored" like that, detrimental to the original sound. You just about lose everything I was talking about before. The energy has been sucked out of it. I`m fortunate that the stuff I listen to doesn`t really lend itself to being made louder, but I do have the occasional dip into something heavier, and thankfully, there are still a lot of good recordings. Correct me if I`m wrong, but I would guess that this practice is down to certain companies, and not right through the industry. Regards
  6. Nah, don`t appeal to me neither, but I`ve just watched a program on BBC2 here in the UK about the launch of Vista. If anyones interested, the full 30min program is here: BBC2-Money Program. Regards
  7. Yep, I`m usually last in finding something, but better late than never. It does look a good site however, and some good stills from "300". Because it was released last year, I thought I may have missed it in my area, but looks like it must just be a bit slow coming out. Will let you know if anything new comes my way, and will have a look out for "The Lives Of Others". Regards
  8. Just tried it. Very quick as you say. So quick I`m wondering how effective it is. Be interesting to see the result of Xanatos trial on his mates infested pc. Regards
  9. I must confess, I`ve never heard of the term "clipressed", and will check out your link. Been well aware of compression for many years, because it`s been the bane of radio broadcasted Classical music listeners for as long as I care to remember. To alter the dynamic range of any music has always been nothing short of criminal. However, must disagree (respectfully of course), in part about the quality of modern recordings. I`ve a reasonable collection of music, covering a large span of time, and some of the older recordings suffer from things such as, lack of bass presence, percussion that sounds like damp squibs, and probably worst of all, sibilant emphasis, the unbearable nails down the blackboard effect that completely ruined many vocals. Add to that narrow soundstage, lack of depth, poor instrument and vocal separation, and I think I would prefer more recently recorded music to the shortfalls of older stuff. However, when you really start to analyse recorded music, there are so many different influences between the master tape and your sound system, including your choice of equipment, that it all boils down to the simple question, "Do you enjoy what your listening to ?" And in my case, the answer is yes. Regards
  10. Not an iTunes user myself, but this may be of interest to anyone who is, and is considering Vista. Link: Regards
  11. Just came across this Movie Database site today. Might be old news to some, but if not, have a look here. Has any one seen the movie "300". Been waiting for this to come my way for some time. Link here. Regards
  12. It`s not real ???? Next thing your gonna tell me is Santa Claus is`nt real. Regards
  13. No clues. You have to see this. Unreal Regards
  14. You can try this guide first: http://www.johnru.com/active-whois/trace-email.html or this program: http://www.abika.com/Reports/traceemails.htm Regards
  15. If any one can take another thread on Vista, this is possibly the most in depth analysis on Vista to date. CNET Video reviews and side by side comparisons on Vista Basic: Vista Home Premium: Vista Business: Vista Ultimate. And, as mentioned, 167 User Reviews. If you haven`t seen these, and are thinking of going in the Vista direction, take a look HERE. Regards
  16. I had a lot of "hang-ups" with IE, if I can call them that. You know what I mean: "IE has encountered a problem and must close". I was so tired of them I switched to Firefox. But unfortunately, unlike yourself, I had absolutely no idea what the cause was each time. I even gave up on sending error reports back to them. However, touch wood, Firefox hasn`t let me down yet. Regards
  17. Xanatos, can`t keep up with you man, but I`ll ""bookmark" all the ones you recommend. I would have been with Andavari on Vanilla Ice, but some singers do make good movies, so I`ll reserve judgement on that one. Now I am a big Bruce Willis fan. From his Die Hard days to stuff like 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element and Hostage. Also like Eric Bana since I saw him in Chopper.. Poor movie overall, but it`s a true story and I read the book first. Well worth a read. The guy was crazy, but likeable. Regards
  18. This is the way of the world now sadly. You just have to look at this forum. A bunch of people, who I refer to as the LOEG. (League Of Extraordinary Gentleman), who are prepared to put in so much time, and offer their knowledge and expertise for free, to help people. And on the other side of the coin, the retrobates, the malicious software writers, who use their knowledge to no further end than spread unhappiness and misery. It`s nice to see the USA at least, handing out severe penalties to these dregs of society. Lets hope their lead is followed internationally. Regards
  19. Schindlers List: Held it together until almost at the end, when the real survivors, accompanied by the actors who played them, were placing stones on his grave. If that don`t stir the emotions, nothing will. Then again, I cried when Lassie got home. Seen Downfall, but not Fateless. Will put it on my "look out for list". One war movie I have been tempted to buy, and I`ve stood and looked at it many times in DVD shops, is a movie called Brotherhood. Take a look here. Regards Edit: Will look out for Zatoichi
  20. Watched a good movie on TV earlier today. Called "The Island on Bird Street" Made in 1997 about a young lad separated from his father, and hiding out from the Nazis in a Jewish ghetto. Almost moved me to tears. If you haven`t seen it, watch out for it. Amazingly, a true story. Regards
  21. Also F1 fan. Nice, but also sad to see the picture of Ayrton Senna. Actually, it`s a bit spooky to look at his pic. and Kurt Cobains, knowing what lay ahead of them. But on a positive, if there can be a positive, they packed more into a relatively short life than most of us could do in long one. Regards
  22. Happy meals ? Chicken don`t look too happy. Regards
  23. That is a good read. Big Brother is not watching us any more. He`s trying to control us. And his name is Microsoft. I`m just grateful that I came across this forum, otherwise I would probably be taken in by all the media hype. I don`t think I have seen a good word about Vista anywhere. Well, maybe on the Microsoft website. Regards
  24. Thanks for the link rridgely. This is one of those things you hope lies in the drawer gathering dust. Regards
