  1. Thanks for the report.

Apparently this is because of some maintenance that Microsoft are doing which is affecting servers.
I've noticed today that some other servers elsewhere are also being affected and some websites are down because of it.

The Piriform staff are in contact with MS to try and get it resolved ASAP.

  2. Are you using Health Check?

There seems to be a problem with connection to a server that Health Check uses.

If you Use Custom Clean instead of Health Check, that doesn't try to connect to that particular server so should finish ok.

Custom Clean cleans what is ticked and ignores what is unticked so you might want to look through those and adjust them as you want before cleaning.
There are two lists to look at, one for Windows and one for other stuff.

That's what I will do, stay with 5.64 free.    Does anyone plan to fix this?   How will we know?    A downloadable 5.64 won't be out there forever.

v5.64 will be on Filehippo, they always keep old versions on the right of the page.
They go back as far as v1.16.082 from November 2004, so I don't think you need worry about it becoming unavailable any time soon.

As for a fix, it depends exactly what the problem is.

At the moment it looks like an Anti-Virus false detection by some AV's, which those AV companies will have to fix themselves.

  4. Some users are having issues with v5.65 that seem to be due to some antivirus programmes not recognising it yet.
Trend Micro seems to be a particular problem, and possibly McAfee.

If you are one of the affected users then for now we suggest re-installing and using a previous version, v5.64 or v5.63, which can be found under 'Older Versions' on the right of: https://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Note that you will have to use the older version in Free mode.
If you register an older version then it will immediately update itself to v5.65 as soon as it registers, leaving you were you were at the start.

  7. Found this from 2018 (before I was a mod).

The tread is about the buttons taking a long time to turn from grey to blue, but my reply there goes back to when they wouldn't turn blue at all for me.
Maybe some of the suggestions there could help?

I found my older thread as well but it's not very helpful, at the time I decided to just live with it sometimes not working and having to close and relaunch CCleaner.

I will note that at least one of the servers seems to have been playing up today.
Reading back what I found in those old threads I'm wondering if that could somehow be connected to your grey button problem if it's only happening today?

  8. I've removed it for you, the in-line editor can be a pig at times with attachments and links.

For future reference if you scroll down the editor you'll see  thumbnails of any attachments in that post with a bin icon to delete them.
(The plus icon adds them into the post after loading, or if you backspaced and removed them by mistake).

Not sure about your grey box, but I seem to recall something similar from a few years ago. If I have time I may take a look if I can find anything useful.

  9. The best I can suggest at the moment is re-installing and using a previous version, v5.64 or v5.63, which can be found under 'Older Versions' on the right of: https://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Maybe try 5.65 again in a few days to see if it is just the AV definitions and they've been updated?

  10. No problem, just wondered what was going on as you had obviously written something and then just replaced it with 'Yo !!!!'.
(It's the sort of thing that spammers do, so looks suspicious).

It would have been better simply to say 'Sorry, it's working again'.

And yes it does seem that the server (used by the Software Updater part of Health Check) was offline earlier, in fact it still seems to be offline.

EDIT- It seems to be an intermittent connection fault.
Maybe the net is getting overloaded with everyone working from home, or sat streaming  video and playing online games all day?

If it does it again then use Custom Clean instead of Health Check.
Custom Clean cleans what is ticked and ignores what is unticked so you might want to look through those and adjust them as you want before cleaning.

  11. Cut and paste for the key is good, did you use the same name that you registered? (We've seen people try to put put a different name or even their email in there).

For Android I believe it works differently, because you buy it from the Google Store it knows that you've paid so there is no need to enter a key.

  12. That is your Controlled Folder Access in Windows security.

Controlled Folder Access is a heavy handed security measure that means only Windows itself can modify certain things.

It's usually off by default, so you must have turned it on.

It's always been heavy handed, it works on a 'block everything' principle.
For instance when it first came out it was on by default and it wouldn't let any 3rd party word processor save documents, only Word itself could save them.
(Took me hours to work out why I suddenly couldn't save any documents, spreadsheets, or images).

You can either turn it off again, or make CCleaner an exception.

You may/will find that CFA may/will also restrict other programs/apps that are not Microsofts own apps, or on their whitelist.

  13. I've just done a double check using both Health Check and the Software Updater from the Tools menu.

That server is indeed down or unreachable at the moment. Maybe try again later.

The rest of health Check should work fine, it's just the software updater that needs that particular server.

  14. Some users are having issues with v5.65 that seem to be due to antivirus programmes not recognising it yet.
Trend Micro seems to be a particular problem, and possibly McAfee.

Hopefully this may calm down in a few days as the AVs update their definitions.

  15. I wouldn't know if it's any good or not.

But I would never take something just because it was offered when downloading/installing something else.

Do some research, look at a few reviews comparing different VPNs, then decide which you like the look of and go to the manufacturers site to download and give it a try, most have a limited period trial.

Here's just one review of the Avast offering, there are reviews many other VPNs on that site, and many other review sites.

This only started after last update from CCleaner. There were no updates from Trend Micro during that time.

And that appears to be the problem, Trend Micro needs updating to the latest definitions so that it stops blocking the latest CCleaner.

Just for info, The latest Trend Micro version is 16.0.1302 released earlier this month.

  17. Bugger, I believe that as soon as you register the key then it turns on auto updates. (and so updates itself).

You could skip the register and use it in free mode if you don't need the pro features?
Smart Cleaning will still work, except for automatic browser cleaning on closing, but scheduling won't and you can only clean the current account.

I'll try and think of a way you can register without it also auto updating. Could be useful in future if I can figure one out.

All I can think of at the moment is to register and then quickly knock off the internet before it can update, if you're quick enough that should give you chance to change the update setting to manual before going back online.

  18. We are currently seeing issues with TrendMicro blocking CCleaner, and have seen one block reported from McAfee.

It seems to be that the AV definitions have not caught up with v5.65 yet?

I suggest that you roll back to 5.46 for a week or so to let the AV definitions catch up. (If that is indeed the problem).

If you don't still have the v5.64 installer then you can find it on the Filehippo page.
