  1. Right click it and it says something about disabling the GUI. Then after you do that there'll be a text box asking if you want to shut the whole program down, of course say no.
  2. Process Lasso! Process Lasso is a unique new technology intended to automatically adjust the allocation of CPU cycles so that system responsiveness is improved in high-load situations. It does this by dynamically temporarily lowering the priorities of processes that are consuming too many CPU cycles, there-by giving other processes a chance to run if they are in need. This is useful for both single and multi-core processors. No longer will a single process, even at normal priority, be able to bring your system to a virtual stall. I only occasionally "hang up", however, when it does occur it's a pain. It (P L) has been running flawlessly. You can enable a notification icon, I have it disabled. I'll keep the program until the first time I get the "This program is not responding" (or whatever it states) text box and then I'll know the program is useless. Then again, that may never happen again! http://www.bitsum.com/prosuper.asp
  3. hazelnut, have you tried any of the other "virtual" type programs? Personally, I don't see the need since with conventional anti-ware I've never found any malware anyway. Plus I think Sandboxie is convenient and effective. I notice on Wilders though, there are a lot of folks that run two virtuals at the same time, e.g. Sandboxie and Returnil.
  4. I only had it for three days and just had to ante up the $25 to register even though the free version is fine. I donated to CCleaner and WeatherPulse in the same manner because I was so impressed with those programs. I kind of feel guilty because I use numerous other programs that also deserve financial reward. Anyway, since I've been using Sandboxie there aren't any temp files to delete, thus very little need for CCleaner. I just feel like I've lost a best friend!
  5. I've finally gone virtual, using Sandboxie all weekend. This, by the way, seems like a no brainer not to use. There was a Sandboxie discussion over on Wilders that keyloggers could still be a problem and a poster suggested Keyscrambler. Haven't tried it but here are the links to the general program (I think they are one and the same) and a Firefox addon. You think this is necessary? Thank You! http://www.download.com/3000-2144_4-10722575.html https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3383
  6. Than you Dennis! I guess I assumed that Winamp wouldn't have made it that easy.
  7. Periodically (like today while it's raining and my wife is working the weekend)I get obsessive relative to my PC cleanliness/management. I had several Winamp listings in my right click folder menu. I can't even tell you the last time I even used Winamp. I had often checked for them listed in ShellExView and they were never there. I installed Context Menu Editor and that didn't have them either. I just uninstalled Winamp and, to it's credit, it did take the menu items with the uninstallation, which doesn't always happen. Anyway, do any of you know of a more robust editor should I have the need again? I almost posted the whole Winamp folder, thinking you all may have been able to identify the file types for the menu listings and I could have deleted them.
  8. Kim Komamndo is asked this question all of the time. A few months ago she reported that someone (never heard who did the research or how they came up with their results) determined that if your HD is three years old or less you should leave it running 24/7. Over three, shut it off when it's not going to be in use for a long time. I've always compromised, if it's going to be in use the next day (my wife home) I leave it on, however, on days we both work I'll shut it down in the morning. My theory is, you keep it cleaner when it's not running and sucking in all of that dust, so if it isn't going to be in use for 10 hours or more I turn it off!
  9. Not sure I need virtualization given where I surf, however, having said that I'm probably in overkill mode already! Linksys WRT54GS Router with firewall enabled Following licensed and enabled: NOD32 Spy Sweeper AVG Anti-Spyware Spyware Doctor from a work license but not enabled Freeware: Comodo Firewall BOClean Windows Defender
  10. Titusville, PA, location of the first ever oil well in the world!
  11. Using Firefox I keep 12 bookmarks in the Bookmark Toolbar. They are always there.
  12. I still truly love Firefox and can't see myself dumping it. However, having said that, nothing is carved in stone. Like Andavari, I've never been able to get use to Opera. One thing I would demand from a browser is tabbed bookmarks. Many tout tabbed browsing, however, I never really read you can tab your favorites. Any suggestions?
  13. For the past two days, Firefox sometimes is locking up, while running CPU to nearly 100% when I attempt to open some threads. This is the only site it appears to be happening at. Very strange!
  14. So I installed FirePhish and disabled the FirePhish toolbar. According to the FirePhish site, you can disable it's toolbar but it will still display green frame around the locationbar or the flashing red warning, but I can't see a green frame anywhere! Have any of you tried this?
  15. My daughter's notebook keeps shutting down, and it notifies her that the battery is dead or low, even though it's plugged in. Now I'm a gear head, not a comp guy, so I don't know if the following applies to this situation or not. When a car battery is completely shot you can not turn the starter over through that battery. I don't care whether you are jumping it or have a charger on it. Can the laptop batteries short out like that also? I know Toshiba is recalling more Sony batteries so if that is the case the timing ($) might be right. This Satellite has been a real pain now for three years with over heating problems. Anyway, before I purchase a new pc or have this one repaired (probably not worth it) should I try a new battery? Remember, it's shutting down because the battery is low even though it's plugged in! Thank You!!!
  16. I find it hard to believe anything could be more effective than the search function in RegSeeker!
  17. Despite the fact that I keep the Taskbar locked, and I keep "Always show" enabled for all my program icons, invariably a few become hid until I go through the whole routine of applying "Always show" again. I really hate the ugly blue "Show hidden icons" arrow that appears in the notification area when the icons vanish. I thought perhaps it could be happening after a disk cleaning but have been able to establish that it is quite random! Any solutions would be greatly appreciated!
  18. I'm afraid that my dear wife may not know the difference between a fish and a phish. I have the anti-phishing capabilities of both IE (which she never uses) and Firefox enabled, however, I'm considering installing Comodo's or McKafee's site advisors and using one of them instead since they can graphically inform. This way, I could tell her to make sure "this" is green or whatever. Do you use either of these now and what is your opinion? If a site was fake, I'm sure Firefox's advisor would give a pretty graphic warning but is it as dependable as Comodo or McKafee? Thank You!
  19. "Was quite impressed by the quality of the deception." Agree, that is why I thought it was worth posting the link.
  20. Registry Mechanic has a Compact Registry feature. I did run NTREGOPT a few hours ago and it improved it but 1%. I just did the Analyze with R M and it could save but 1%, so I'd say they both work about the same. R M is much faster though.
  21. I'm basing my query on this: "Note that the program does NOT change the contents of the registry in any way, nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive (as the PageDefrag program from SysInternals does). The optimization done by NTREGOPT is simply compacting the registry hives to the minimum size possible."!
