  1. Include me with the can't use crowd! First problem was a continual nag for the installation disk for ScanSoft OmniPage SE 4.0 (part of Canon All-In-One software) at boot. Eventually I found a download link for a new Vista version (I have XP) of SS OP SE that fixed that problem. Apparently, even though the Canon scan feature worked perfectly fine, there was something not exactly right and for some illogical reason, with v3 installed it wanted it fixed. The problem now is v3 is not compatible with Sandboxie on my pc. Firefox and IE7 both run normally out of the sandbox, however, sandboxed they crawl and are very erratic with mouse gestures and scrolls hopping all over the place. I'm just using the XP firewall rather than reinstalling v2.4. I'm hard wired to a router and run Sandboxed anyway so it should be sufficient until they get this sorted out. The really strange thing is disabling Comodo doesn't make any difference.

  3. Thanks for the heads up Hump! This is soooo tempting. My wife uses the desk top more and more and I'll be retiring in May so we'll be visiting kids more often. It would be nice to carry my sites with me. My "mad" (my dad use to call it his knock down money, lol) is down to around $300 because I purchased a hand gun recently but there is always plastic. Will be interesting to see if Best Buy or online sites like newegg get in the fray.
  4. Perhaps safe is the wrong term since I'm not really paranoid, however, here is the issue. The Firefox gmail notifier extension v0.5.6.5 somehow kept you logged into a personalized google homepage or account. Subsequent versions (many months of) lost that feature so I've kept 565. However, google changed something about gmail (think I read where it is gmail 2 now or something) preventing the extension from auto login, so the developer of gmail notifier addressed it with v0.6.2.2 which indeed fixed the gmail problem but does not keep google homepages and accounts logged in. I have now excluded google cookies from being dumped after Firefox sessions and excluded them from CCleaner cleaning. Do you dump google cookies?
  5. I installed an NVIDIA graphics card since it was free after rebate and I only had integrated graphics. The backgrounds of the toolbars in both Ff and IE are very beige now instead of white. Any ideas on how to brighten them up would be appreciated. My display is set for Windows Blue, which it was before the install.
  6. Oh, I like the notification that v1.1 provides, thanks!
  7. Was looking through some recent PC World Mags and ran across this to create restore points in XP or Vista. Vista requires a few more hoops to jump through though. Paste it exactly like I have it here in notepad and change it to .vbs Then save it to your desktop or documents. In XP just double click (or right>open) and there'll be a new restore point. If anyone wants it for Vista I'll type the directions tomorrow. Paste exactly how it is here! rp = "Scripted Restore Point by " & WScript.ScriptName GetObject("winmgmts:\\.\root\default:Systemrestore").CreateRestorePoint rp, 0, 100 Make sure everything is only on two lines. After I posted I saw where the "100" was on a different line. I don't think that will work.
  8. Almost 60 yr old here. Need you smart youngons for advice! lol Thank You, ratchet! Main Circuit Board Board Board: Dell Computer Corp. 0G1548 A00 Serial Number: ..CN7082144SG0J4. Bus Clock: 533 megahertz BIOS: Dell Computer Corporation A05 12/02/2003 From what I gather my board may not accept PCI Ex and this is just PCI so it might work. http://www.freeafterrebate.info/deal/3d-fu...28mb-ddr-memory
  9. Some of it for the not to techy, some for the somewhat techy. I actually copied the dll tip and put it in my documents since I had that happen once or twice. I stopped at 20 for tonight, might find more goodies tomorrow. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,22018...3129TX1K0000625
  10. Suddenly, this week I began receiving over 100 "Undeliverable Mail" notices in my gmail spam folder. With some filtering I'd cut it back to single digits but some were still getting through. I also changed my password since it appeared like my account was sending mail but that didn't stop it either. I finally just closed the account and opened a new one. The scary thing is that the spams were notifications of undeliverable mail, suggesting a spambot. My pop3, hotmail and yahoo mails are quite normal. Although I think this was probably happening at the Google server level, I still scanned my pc with NOD32, Spyware Doctor, AVG Anti-Spyware and Spy Sweeper with no malware detections. So what do you think was happening? Thank You!
  11. I'm a NOD32 owner/user/lover! Am I technically empowered? Nope. What I do no is that the NOD users take it personal when they don't test highly and they claim that it is the way the tests are conducted. Don't know if that is a valid argument or not. However, what I do know is that it blows all the other products away in recognizing and blocking brand new threats. Nothing else ever even comes close. They conduct that test by not updating signatures for a month or so and then hitting them with known malware.
  12. Just noticed this in a Dell catalog that came this week. Maybe you could use it to move from one partition or drive to another and back again or something. I'll tell you what, if I were to get a new PC, I'd ante up $30 (that was the cost at Dell) in a heartbeat for this and save the hassle of redownloading all my apps! http://www.laplink.com/pcmover/
  13. Update on the update problem! I suspect you have all been through this: You have updates notice, you begin the download, then the installation, only to discover the installation failed. Then you start jumping through hoops, you search the problem, find a fix on tech forums somewhere (uninstall this, reinstall this, enter this dll, etc.). Well a few days ago I install the new IE7 version (I really only use Ff and I wonder why?!) and for the next few days the update icon appears in the notification area (for security update KB.....43). I initiate the download and it goes away, only to reappear after the next boot. Installations from the update site also prove unsuccessful and indeed the log file shows all these failures. I have updates configured to notify me only, so I figure maybe if I just change it to auto it would work (never had to do that , however). Well when I went to change my settings there was the option to use Windows update instead of MS update, I selected that and to my amazement the update went off flawlessly! So now when I check the update page there is this typical MS add for "NEW Get Microsoft Update Now". So my question is: do I stay with Windows update and what do you all use?
  14. OOOOHHHHH, how I hate MS. So I install this new version and for the past 48 hours I get the updates available icon. Click on it and hit download (KB937143), disappears in a few seconds (because it's already downloaded). If I go to Windows Update site and check express it does its thing (supposedly downloading the same update) and when it tries to install says it has failed. This happens way to often with MS updates!
  15. From what I recently heard on the KIM Komando show. There is software that is designed to do just that. She said she hasn't had much luck with it. You apparently can't just use your normal backup or imaging software because (if I understood her correctly) when you install software it writes all over the drive in a special order, i.e. the files aren't necessarily all together. Which does make sense since some go to the registry and some are just program files. The order in which they are installed can't be duplicated with normal backup software for some reason.
  16. I still have to use IE on my PA State Network, for whom I work, to access work from home. I need favorites tabbed, my biggest gripe with IE and I agree, something about Opera I just don't like! This IE7Pro will nag if you want to open tabs you had open during a session but can't do it without the session restore nag. Just can't see ever dumping Ff.
  17. Then be sure to check it tonight. They must get a ton of submissions on Mondays because there'll be three or four pages of new products and updates.
  18. Well I'll be, they must have anted up. It was actually up for sale yesterday and early this morning. I have that site marked and check it every day when I come home from work. I only access it from my bookmark and indeed it's there in all its glory again!
  19. Noticed this yesterday, then forgot to mention it.
  20. Be careful! The reg cleaner removed a Sandboxie driver, it wouldn't function this morning upon boot, and Weather Pulse didn't load either. It had found about a dozen items last night, mostly itunes entries, so I deleted them and shutdown. Fortunately it's backup option worked fine because after I merged the backup everything is back to normal.
  21. I love Sandboxie so much I have to weigh in. I installed it Friday the 14th. I was so impressed I anted up $25 by Sunday the 16th, even though there is no huge advantage to paying. I donated to CCleaner and Weather Pulse over the years because sometimes I'm just in awe of certain freeware. The reason I like this program so much is I don't think my wife would know what to do if NOD32 or one of the anti-spyware progs were to give her a warning. I have the Sandboxie/Firefox quicklaunch icon right where the Firefox icon used to be and moved Ff far to the left. I don't think my wife has ever opened Ff out of the box yet. Anyway, using the Fasterfox timer and a clean cache I ran some tests that first weekend. I randomly selected seven web sites I had bookmarked. One of them, I forget, may have been Yahoo, did load almost two seconds slower sandboxed, however, based on the rest of the results, that may have been an anomoly. The other six sites loaded less than .2 faster out of the sandbox. Two of the sites were less than .1 faster as the Fasterfox timer reads to the .000 of a second. I do test at over 4800 kb/s during nominal traffic periods so I have a reasonably good connection. Not trying to convince anyone to try it, just passing on the results of my testing.
  22. At least two Firefox (maybe three) updates ago I had to stay with Gmail Notifier version 0.5.6.5. 0.6.1 doesn't work correctly for me, however, 0.5.6.5 continues to churn away flawlessly!
  23. Does one need any other anti-phishing tool? This one looks really good and it can function without the toolbar. Now all of this seems moot since we've been using Sandboxie. I moved the Firefox quick launch icon far to the left, Sandboxie far to the right so even my wife always opens Ff sandboxed. Although I understand one could still send info to the wrong site. http://www.mylittlemole.com/faq.htm
  24. Seems like it should be this value or at least both: browser.sessionstore.enabled (change to false), however, I won't mess with it until verified by someone.
