  1. PC Tools does create/sell very good software. With my work license, I have installed on my home pc Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor. Because I have Spy Sweeper, AVG Anti-Spyware (have a couple scheduled two minute or less memory scans each day, which frees a ton of ram) and Windows Defender (because it activates restore points prior to any installs) enabled at all times, I only weekly update Spyware Doctor and periodically scan with it. Having said all that I'm kind of qualifying this statement: Despite what their web site claims about free for life, they are about the most non giving software company you can ever find. Their idea of trials has always been a free scan but if you want to remove that reg entry or piece of spyware you have to pay! If their firewall gains any popularity, once they think they have all the kinks worked out, they are going to charge or offer just a very basic version for free, whereas, when Comodo states its firewall will be forever free, including auto updates, I believe them.
  2. I mostly just want to record some talk radio while I'm at work. Thank You!
  3. Yes, they are back up. Apparently they had a server problem! http://forums.comodo.com/index.php/topic,6689.0.html
  4. Don't mess with the forum. Just download the program, it is so straight forward you won't need any help with it!
  5. I have nothing against AVG. Since AVG Anti-Spyware purchased ewido, I even renewed my subscription because it has some features I really like, but their anti-virus product, especially the free version, it is not highly regarded, in fact I recently saw it categorized as a "B to C" product! This link has no agenda, it's just trying to keep pc users informed. If free and low mem usage is a higher priority than protection then ignore the link. Another consideration, is the fact that the "A" anti-virus products now are really getting very good at stopping spyware also. http://ssl1.at/av-comparatives.org/
  6. If you are looking for commercial, these stats are not bogus! I actually found a site a few days ago that graphed mem usage for most of the anti-virus progs and nothing even came close to how low nod32s usage was! http://www.eset.com/products/compare.php
  7. Well, ghost or not, I'm back! Anyway, happy I got my point across! It's 4:00AM in PA and time to shovel some more snow before work!
  8. So I'm confused! Can jkdefrag just be started manually from a shortcut and without a command prompt?
  9. If you don't mind paying you can't do any better than NOD32!
  10. DLCFCATS? I'm compiling a list of startup entries my cousin can disable or remove from the Dell system she got for xmas. I can't find any information on this, except it's in tons of hijack this logs, of course they show all of the necessary things too. Since it is a spool driver I'm thinking leave it! Thank You!
  11. Since I have open and monitoring Spy Sweeper, AVG Anti-Spyware, Windows Defender, NOD32, Comodo and surf safely, I really don't see the need. I always have a valid subscription of S.D. from our work license. I update it once or twice/week but don't run it because of all the other apps and because of its retarded update method of stopping and restarting, even with scheduled updates, that annoys the heck out of me at work. However, if I was going to do this, I would use CD-RWs and just keep changing it once or twice/week. I think that would work!
  12. I just received an email from a friend who purchased a Dell PC just before xmas. It came with a free printer so he isn't quite ready to purchase an all in one printer. I don't know make or model, however, his question was "... that he had found the scanner drivers online for Windows 95 & 98, would they work with XP?" Thank You!
  13. I'm thinking about trying it with my adult children. Also, would it work with a webcam?
  14. vulnerable during streaming audio (and I presume video). Is this true?
  15. This is what I can tell you about it! I purchased ewido about 14 months ago (back when trojans and worms weren't being delt with by other apps) and renewed it a couple of months ago.. It (ewido) found, removed and blocked Tacoda cookies from deep inside my Firefox profile. The only app at the time that found and removed them. Since it was purchased (and changed to) by AVG I've reformatted and posed the question as to whether it can still do that but no one has been able to verify that it can. From reviews I have read, it does a reasonably good job of blocking and finding malware, but it is not as good at removing malware as Spy Sweeper or Spyware Doctor. I will say this for it, it seems to update signatures several times a day. It's greatest feature (my opinion!), however, is its ability to release RAM from other apps that have leaked it or not returned it after use. I'm not very knowledgeable about computers so accept that explanation for what it's worth. In practical terms, if you are using 500MB of RAM and you only scan memory with AVG A-S, which takes about two minute or less, your RAM usage will be returned to around 300MB or even less. That is the sole reason I repurchased it! Hope this helps.
  16. Apparently the Comodo servers are being overwhelmed with everyone trying to update to the new version (they need to see how well CCleaner does this!). Several times I've got passed the 50% mark when an error occurs. So what happens to the first 50% of the files files? Thank You!
  17. What! Firefox does have a spell check. It also always had the Spellbound extension available.
  18. You can remove any icon by right click the bar>Properties>Hide Inactive Icons. That opens up another window with the option to never show but then you'll end up with that big arrow that I hate!
  19. Relative to this RAM issue, my latest freeware install is MemInfo. It can show RAM: used, available, % used (my choice, which really is just amount used since I have 1GB) or % available. The little graph has options also. By default it goes from green to yellow after 50% usage and to red at 90%. My system tray is starting to look like my kids notebooks! lol http://www.carthagosoft.net/meminfo.htm
  20. NOD32 is really the best! The only negatives I've ever seen have been the fact that it is a little confusing (default is probably all you need), however, if you follow Blackspears instruction at the linked site it is quite easy to customize. And oh yes it's quite good with emails! http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdispla...une=-1&f=16
