  1. Click on your start menu. Open up Run. Type in chkdsk as it is spelled. Hit enter. Let it run. AJ
  2. Yep, that a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading. The second window in the task manager proves that. No missing "actual" core, but that is how it is supposed to be functioning. That's what this quote means: Odd that you're having problems. Are you unintentionally multitasking more than you were before? Do you know if you have DDR2 RAM? Cause it is either that or DDR (I believe) and 2 GB's will give you that boost you are looking for. DDR2 is insanely cheap right now. However, P4's are getting long in the tooth. You might want to consider saving for a new PC. Let me know what you think. AJ
  3. Doesn't that disable the GUI...supposed to make booting quicker right? AJ
  4. Sounds like you might have a spyware infection. Go over to to the Spyware forum and post a topic. Folllow the direction in the sticky found here: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=20120 AJ
  5. Just of the screen you were looking at. Also, go to Start>Run> and type dxdiag and hit enter. Hit yes if a window pops up. Then take a screenshot of the window that pops up. Also, just take a screen shot of the Task Manager, the one that shows the cores. AJ
  6. Post a screen shot. It's unlikely you have a dual core Pentium 4. Pentium 4's have hyper threading, which emulates a second core, but Pentium 4's for the majority were single core with hyper threading. The few dual core Pentium 4's were Extreme editions, and were able to emulate two cores, for a theoretical quad core. They were mad expensive, and were no where near as good as the Core 2 quad chips. 2 CPUs?

That was Intel's Hyperthreading Technology. It (sort of) simulated having a second core, allowing programs to take advantage of it. Read up on it here: Wikipedia: Hyperthreading AJ
  10. I find myself agreeing for the majority with what Stocker said. I would get rid of AOL if you don't use it. With that, you can get rid of the Viewpoint Media player - it is tied into AOL. http://www.viewpoint.com/installer/v4/html/vmp_faq.html That is if you don't use it at all. You can get rid of the Learn2Player if you do this as well. I would blow all of the McAfee stuff off. I am the one person who likes Norton. I've used it, and it used to be a system hog, but I've never had problems with it. The newest version, 2009 I believe, was received very highly by Maximum PC, cause they totally rewrote it. Much faster and efficient. That is your choice. If you remove it, you will need an AV program. I don't know what Pure Network Port Magic is, but you can probably do without it. You can get rid of Real Player as well. Also, I don't know what BigFix is. If you don't use Microsoft Money, that can go as well. I would update Adobe Reader, and make sure Java is fully updated. AJ
  11. If you use the built in find function, there is a highlight option to highlight all of the times the word is found. AJ
  12. Isn't it the codename for the 64 bit version of Firefox? AJ
  13. Cost: Not including monitor, mouse, keyboard. AJ

  15. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7#Hardware_requirements My laptop - Core 2 Duo T9300 @ 2.5 GHz, 3 GBs of DDR2 RAM, NVIDIA Quadro 570m, 160 GB hard drive. I'm confused by your statement. And, Core i7 is way better than that. Can you clarify? Also, for more proof, my friend installed it on his desktop (Core 2 E4300, 2 GB's of RAM, NVIDIA 8600) as his actually install and it was as fast, if not faster, than Vista. AJ
  16. Ahahaha that is awesome. Made my morning. AJ
  17. Don't know what you're talking about comper6 - everyone I've talked to said to seems to be pretty happy with it. I have had it in a Virtual Machine, and I like it. I might install it as a main O/S once my Core i7 rig is built . Maximum PC is very happy with the beta so far. AJ
  18. http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/ Try it out...it works real well. It also give you beta updates as well. It's really small and efficient. AJ

    Vista

I've had Vista Ultimate installed on my school laptop. At first I was really skeptical. However, I've grown to like it. My own problem is that my laptop has 3 GB's of RAM, and it idles at about 40% usage with nothing open. AJ

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/pdf_archi...ar_windows_tips Click the PDF link. Page 16 of it. I did this before. Didn't notice a difference. AJ
  21. CCleaner is not a program remover. It will delete the unnecessary temporary files, junk files, and such to give you the room on your harddrive back to you. I think you are looking for a program such as this: Revo Uninstaller Anything that you install can be removed safely, outside of Windows updates (for the most part.) I can't think of anything that would have to make you do something drastic, like a complete reinstall of the O/S. AJ
  22. Using WOT. Sometimes it gets annoying with its icons/circles on some email --- mainly my Newegg newsletter, cause it breaks everything up. That's the only reason I turn it off. It is great except for that. But I have no experience with McAfee. I dislike their antivirus programs so much, that I won't give it a try . AJ
  23. I have the Web Of Trust addon for Firefox and it was Red, and it was "very poor." I clicked through to the scorecard. http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/mywebtattoo.com I wouldn't risk it. AJ
