  1. I think anyone who has used a computer just for a little while will already know about Firefox and Opera being safer than Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is a security risk and an infection waiting to happen, it's been that way for many years now. I only use IE for Windows/Microsoft Updates, or the occassional registration that won't work in Firefox or Opera.

    Edit:

Firefox can do Windows/Microsoft Updates if the IEtab (or is it IE Tab) extension is installed, it just uses Internet Explorers engine and can be configured to only use the IE engine on specific websites to avoid using the IE engine all the time.

  2. Could possibly be a pup but that's unknown until a HijackThis log is posted. I've personally only seen AIO listed if there's an All-In-One printer/scanner installed on a system, but who's to say it couldn't be malware related, however I won't speculate.

  3. there's kerio personal " hard to use and understand even for good users"

I don't find it difficult. If you understand ports and protocols even the most confusing firewall should be easy enough to configure. It's just when some developer comes about and uses fraises that don't coincide with what I'd call a standard when things get difficult to understand, especially if the included help file doesn't explain exactly what certain things mean. That's unfortunately a drawback of many software titles that include a help file that doesn't even explain the functions of the application very well.

I personally prefer Windows Firewall myself as it seems to have less bugs and problems when compared to any third-party software-based firewall I've used, albeit I know it doesn't block outgoing connections and has a piss poor logging feature.

  4. If Realplayer won't stop via the program it may have set itself as a service, and to disable services on WinXP:

    1. Start -> Run -> Type in: services.msc

    2. Find the service for it (if it's actually in there) and change its startup type via right clicking it and selecting Properties to: Manual or Disabled

    Note:

There's non-bloated alternatives to Realplayer and QuickTime called:

    Real Alternative and QuickTime Alternative

  5. Well, I'm going with:

    EZ anti-virus, and

    Zone Alarm (v5.5.0.94)

Hopefully this will use less ram than McAfee Security Suite.

    Thanks a lot, guys.

...also if you want to go the extreme route of active protection download and install HostsMan and then chugg through it's various menus to download and install the hpHOSTS HOSTS File (link provided if you wish to install it without HostsMan), and MVPS HOSTS File (link provided if you wish to install it without HostsMan).

With the hpHOSTS and MVPS HOST files installed they will block tons upon tons of ad's and some known spyware/virus/malware websites that could infect your system. Note: If a site you like is blocked such as Softpedia.com (which hpHOSTS blocks) you'll have to manually remove it from the HOSTS file and reboot.

  6. but why not anything after v5.5.0.94 for Zone Alarm?

Because ZoneAlarm is known to be buggy, and/or have installation issues (actually even v5.5 has issues) on some systems. The real problem it has is if/when it only partially installs and if it does trying to remove it's partially installed files is difficult as they become locked/protected. The problems during install that it has is the sole reason why I'll only install it in safe mode, and only uninstall it in safe mode.

  7. Also Dell branded Printer/Scanners made by Lexmark may have that.

    And Lexmark branded Printer/Scanners.

    Edit:

That's the only problem I really see with CCleaner's Uninstall list in that it will list some individually installed components that are actually the parts of a whole parent application.

  8. Perhaps Microsoft wants to intimate people and get them a little worried and push them into buying a legit copy if they dont own one but I dont think they dare to push the kill switch because it would annoy alot of people which may go looking for alternatives.

Valid point! Also if they piss off some people who happen to be using a legit purchased Windows OS they could end up getting lawsuits left and right if they all of a sudden locked people out of their computers.

  9. For antivirus get eTrust EZ Antivirus fully functional free 1 year trial, you won't regret it, and couple it with Ewido Anti-Spyware, and SpywareBlaster and you shouldn't have to deal with too many infections. Other than that I like AVG (free), and Avira AntiVir (free).

For a firewall Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall is good too, however if it has to be ZoneAlarm I won't touch anything newer than v5.5.0.94.

Filehippo.com has a collection of antispyware, antivirus and firewall downloads.

  10. Opera is not installed in the default location.

That would probably have been the problem.

    Note:

CCleaner is also set to clean some (not all) specific directories of programs, therefore if they aren't in the expected default installed location those applications won't get cleaned.

I hard coded the directory into which Opera is installed in that INI file and that seemed to have fixed the problem.

That would be the obvious fix when using a customized installation that doesn't use the default installation path that the setup program suggests.

  11. It's probably because this is tacked onto the end of the reference:

    ,272\HKCR\ZAmailsafe\defaulticon

Then again many registry cleaners "may" see it as invalid. If it's re-appearing in CC's Issues read this. You can also either manually remove it via Regedit, or ignore it.

  12. Sygate Personal Firewall should have an option in its settings that should allow you to re-enable it during startup without having to reinstall it. However if it doesn't, reinstall wouldn't be a bad ideal - just remember if you do reinstall use the option to Upgrade that way you won't loose all your currently configured blocked/allow apps.

  13. SpyBot S&D might also be a good choice, with its Teatimer component.

He'll have to search for Hazenut's post that had a link to a forum that gave instructions on using ResourceHacker to change the GUI in TeaTimer so that the buttons are visible. I still can't believe it hasn't been fixed after all this time.

Anyways, we are both in agreement that SpywareGuard is outdated.

  14. I think you need to get something more current than SpywareGuard because it's hopelessly outdated with the last def file being from 2004 (if my memory serves me correctly). However I do realize on Win9x systems it may be a necessary alternative since it offers some protection without causing a massive slowdown.

I would instead recommend Arovax Shield (freeware) which is compatible with Win9x and above systems.

  15. Rough unedited and possibly inaccurate translation via Google Translate:

Greetings to all I have a problem which I explain to them: tapeworm a problem with a software because me devolvia that decia ?unexpected error? when it tried to execute it, after installing it and desintalar it several times desinstale using version 1.30.310 Of now ccleaner when attempt to install it appears to me the siguente message again ?the administrator of the system establecio directors to prevent this installation? please I need urgent aid for this case.
