This thread is all far too complicated.
Indeed!
A quick batch file that works in MS-DOS mode would have saved about half the posts in this thread.

Maybe you need to use DAF to fix registry permissions so that CCleaner and any other registry cleaner will remove them once and for all, instructions here.

I installed version 4 and did like it until I noticed that it actvated "guard" without me wanting it, I wanted to stick with the free version. I clicked on "deactivate" and it said that it was deactivatd, but at each startup it is loaded even if it is not active. I tried all the things I know, MSCONFIG, registry edit, nothing worked. i uninstalled it and for some reason reinstalled it and it came up "free version", but "guard" was still active in the processes.
If you're on WinXP try this:
- Start -> Run -> Type in: services.msc
- Scroll down to: ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard
right click it and select Properties
- Change the Startup type to Manual or Disabled.
Also there's actually a few antivirus scanners that can only be disabled via services.msc on WinXP.

Bugs? or is this just an isolated situation I ran into on my system (I did do the Quick Upgrade install, e.g.; installed over v8.54):
- The installer removed the Macromedia Flash Player plugin for Opera.
- The installer didn't place an Opera shortcut in the Start Menu->All Programs menu.
I wonder what else I'll find.
- The installer removed the Macromedia Flash Player plugin for Opera.

LOL
What a deal!
Ha ha, that's a good one.
So someone buys it and thinks they're immortal. Then approximately two minutes later when they walk outside, and something konks them on the head and they die.

If you already have the Plus-Version that you purchased during v3.5 you'd have to check their website to see if v4.0 is a free upgrade or not. I don't know if it is, and haven't checked because I'll continue using it as the freeware version.

but they say they will not be offering any
fixes for problems that may arise in the future.
Microsoft have been stating that since 2000 or 2001, and yet they still release critical updates for Windows 98, well at least for Internet Explorer they do.
I also have their updates for Windows 98 stored on a few CD-R's, and on my D:\ partition on my Win98 computer. However the easiest way to update Win98 is to get the Microsoft Update CD from their website that fixes critical updates, I think it's free - well at least it was when I ordered it a year or two ago.
I honestly see no reason for them to remove the ability to use Windows Update on Win95-WinMe systems ("the no more updates comment they've made), and frankly it would be a slap in the face to people who purchased those operating systems in the event they had to do a format and reinstall.

Your index.dat trick is rather cool!

I suppose it disables this after the trial period when it goes into freeware mode, this is my assumption according the feature list on their website:
- Additional Features Of The Plus-Version
- NEW Scheduled scans
- Real-time monitoring of the entire system
- Memory Scan detects active threats
- Self-protection at kernel layer guarantees gapless monitoring
- Automatic online-update
- Additional Features Of The Plus-Version

Yeah, however after removing the hotfix uninstallers make sure you run the Issues until no references pointing to the removed hotfix uninstallers are listed.
Optional: RegSeeker is needed to remove the invalid references CCleaner won't detect.

I noticed the name has changed from ewido anti-malware to ewido anti-spyware.

I'm wondering if MS will at some point make a device that must be attached to the computer like those that my mom has in order to use your sewing/embroidery software to make sure it's:
1. Legit.
2. Just to load the software.
It seems over-the-top, but it would sure as hell make casual piracy a thing of the past, and I know if I owned MS and the most popular OS I would make it damn near impossible for people to use an illegal copy.

After you install VB6 make sure you restart Windows, even if the installer doesn't tell you to do so!

Big deal, so the index.dat files can be deleted with 3rd party software woohoo, and CCleaner happens to be the best software for doing it in my opinion.
If you look at the creation date of NoJunk it was back in Dec 2001, which was before CCleaner, and at that time removing the index.dat files on Win9x was a recommended procedure to do in MS-DOS mode.
I'm done talking about, there's no need to PM me about it, have a nice day!

When the newest version of WGA became available I had to download it, because MS Update always went to a page to update it to the newest version.
-
To me, these days it's main advantage lies the ability to remove all but the most recent Restore Point (on the "More Options" tab)
That's all I use it for, removing the old Restore Points.

Thanks DJ and Tony! Disk Cleanup is now usable speed-wise on my system again.

kerio? never heard of it.
-
Use Outpost Firewall because it is the only software firewall which really works.
I hope you're using the Pro commercial version because the older and outdated free version isn't for WinXP.
And there are other software-based firewalls that work (Sygate 5.5, ZoneAlarm, Kerio), however I realize it can depend upon a system configuration itself as to how well a particular software-based firewall will function, or not function.

Silly.

Hint: When posting images use .jpg or .png.

IE isn't bad.
It's a security risk regardless of the critical updates MS is constantly applying to it, which in reality is only keeping it on life support.
