  1. I installed version 4 and did like it until I noticed that it actvated "guard" without me wanting it, I wanted to stick with the free version. I clicked on "deactivate" and it said that it was deactivatd, but at each startup it is loaded even if it is not active. I tried all the things I know, MSCONFIG, registry edit, nothing worked. i uninstalled it and for some reason reinstalled it and it came up "free version", but "guard" was still active in the processes.

If you're on WinXP try this:

    1. Start -> Run -> Type in: services.msc

    2. Scroll down to: ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard

right click it and select Properties

    3. Change the Startup type to Manual or Disabled.

Also there's actually a few antivirus scanners that can only be disabled via services.msc on WinXP.

  2. If you already have the Plus-Version that you purchased during v3.5 you'd have to check their website to see if v4.0 is a free upgrade or not. I don't know if it is, and haven't checked because I'll continue using it as the freeware version.

  3. but they say they will not be offering any

fixes for problems that may arise in the future.

Microsoft have been stating that since 2000 or 2001, and yet they still release critical updates for Windows 98, well at least for Internet Explorer they do.

I also have their updates for Windows 98 stored on a few CD-R's, and on my D:\ partition on my Win98 computer. However the easiest way to update Win98 is to get the Microsoft Update CD from their website that fixes critical updates, I think it's free - well at least it was when I ordered it a year or two ago.

I honestly see no reason for them to remove the ability to use Windows Update on Win95-WinMe systems ("the no more updates comment they've made), and frankly it would be a slap in the face to people who purchased those operating systems in the event they had to do a format and reinstall.

Your index.dat trick is rather cool!

  4. I suppose it disables this after the trial period when it goes into freeware mode, this is my assumption according the feature list on their website:

    • Additional Features Of The Plus-Version
    • NEW Scheduled scans
    • Real-time monitoring of the entire system
    • Memory Scan detects active threats
    • Self-protection at kernel layer guarantees gapless monitoring
    • Automatic online-update

  5. I'm wondering if MS will at some point make a device that must be attached to the computer like those that my mom has in order to use your sewing/embroidery software to make sure it's:

    1. Legit.

    2. Just to load the software.

It seems over-the-top, but it would sure as hell make casual piracy a thing of the past, and I know if I owned MS and the most popular OS I would make it damn near impossible for people to use an illegal copy.

  6. Big deal, so the index.dat files can be deleted with 3rd party software woohoo, and CCleaner happens to be the best software for doing it in my opinion.

If you look at the creation date of NoJunk it was back in Dec 2001, which was before CCleaner, and at that time removing the index.dat files on Win9x was a recommended procedure to do in MS-DOS mode.

I'm done talking about, there's no need to PM me about it, have a nice day!

  7. Use Outpost Firewall because it is the only software firewall which really works.

I hope you're using the Pro commercial version because the older and outdated free version isn't for WinXP.

And there are other software-based firewalls that work (Sygate 5.5, ZoneAlarm, Kerio), however I realize it can depend upon a system configuration itself as to how well a particular software-based firewall will function, or not function.
