  1. It may be the driver or software that's causing it or preventing it.

Off-topic, however it may shed some light:

Older Kodak digital cameras could have pictures copied from them using Windows Explorer to the hard disk because they could be used by using a generic Windows driver. However with newer versions and/or drivers trying that will completely crash the computer with a BSOD because they now require using the Kodak software to do the transfer.

  2. Even the human brain supposedly emits some radiation. However the biggest source of radiation is 93 billion miles away - the Sun however its true destructive effect is thwarted by the Earth's magnetic field which without we'd all be stir fried.

  3. Although they are nice I still prefer shorter not as long versions because they don't take up allot of space in the sig, like this small_link.gif, also the shorter ones can be placed vertically without taking up much space.

The long ones don't really bother me at all because griping about something that promotes good freeware like CCleaner, Opera, Firefox, etc., is pointless.

  4. Everyone can have a free jumpdrive, here's how:

Remove your hard drive and jump on it, there you now have a jumpdrive.

I'm just glad I didn't waste my time filling out the info to not get one. :P

  5. Well at least you recommended using System Restore, that I can't fault you on. However I also won't be trying any of your so-called tweaks, hence they weren't asked for in the first place, e.g.; there was no request for them. It would've however been a different situation if someone had specifically asked how to tweak a particular thing and you supplied the information, other than that I surely don't welcome tweaks like these as some inexperienced users may use them.

    Anyways, welcome to the forums.

  6. Yeah turning it off then on will do the trick.

Although this is the really slow approach you can also remove all old restore points, but keep the most recent one by using:

Disk Cleanup -> More Options -> System Restore area click: Clean up

  7. To reduce/compact/defrag the registry use one of the following. Both have the same end result in that they can make the registry smaller by a few percentages:

    • NTREGOPT
Make sure you get the full package that also contains ERUNT because it's a top-knotch program for backing up the registry, and can really save you allot of trouble if System Restore fails.
    • RegCompact.NET
Shows you the before and after size of each registry file before you commit to compacting it.

Both are completely freeware, and don't install any adware or spyware.

  8. how can i delete all of my temp files even if they are being used?

    1. If you're using Windows 2000 or XP you can use

    Unlocker:

Right click the files to remove and select: Unlocker

With Unlocker open on the bottom left select: Delete

On the right select: Unlock All

    Reboot

    1. If you're on any other Windows OS 9x/Me you could use

    HijackThis:

    Run HijackThis

Select: Open the Misc Tools section

Select: Delete a file on reboot

With HijackThis you'll have to manually select each file one at a time and select No to reboot until you've selected the last file. After you've selected all files let it reboot Windows.

Note: I'm thinking the part of ZA that is giving you trouble is the TruVector portion since it protects itself from tampering, well at least that was the portion that made it very difficult (nearly impossible) for me to remove the partially installed ZA from my system.

Also if/when you're able to remove the partially installed files make sure you run CCleaner's 'Cleaner' and 'Issues' to make sure it cleans up any leftovers.

Other than that I don't know what to tell you, however if you're using Windows XP use a restore point from a previous day before you attempted to install ZoneAlarm.

    Edit:

What's listed below is from the ZA version 5.5 watched installation, I don't know if the files are the same in newer versions however you may also need to remove the following files and folders to aid in the removal or installation:

    C:\Program Files\Zone LabsC:\WINDOWS\Internet LogsC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ZoneLabsC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vsconfig.xmlC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vsdata.dllC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vsdatant.sys C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vsinit.dllC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vsmonapi.dllC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vspubapi.dllC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vsregexp.dllC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vsutil.dllC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vsxml.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\zlcomm.dllC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\zlcommdb.dll

  9. Aaron you really need to start backing up the Windows registry before you go about with your daily experiments, because at some point things aren't going to be so easy to undo. I know this from experience because I've been there, and done that on multiple occassions in the past!

If your using Windows XP I'd highly suggest you start creating daily registry backups with ERUNT, and since some of your experiments really worry me you should also manually make a daily system restore point.

  10. You need to be more specific about what the .dat file is named, otherwise you may end up trying to remove something that shouldn't be messed with and possible break your installation of Windows.

If it's index.dat those are Windows\Internet Explorer created files and CCleaner will empty them on reboot, however as soon as the computer starts they will be rebuilt by Windows and will have a minimum filesize of I think 16KB, albeit they won't contain any identifiable information until you use Internet Explorer again.

If it's something like ntuser.dat, that definitely shouldn't be messed with by trying to delete it because it's a part of the Windows registry.

  11. For some odd reason it always failed on my system with the can't create temp file, etc., error whenever I tried to run it from my D:\ drive. Therefore as stupid as it may seem; make sure you run the ZA setup.exe file from the C:\ drive. I'd suggest copying it into C:\Temp and then run it from there. It also wouldn't hurt to disable as many running programs as possible including antivirus resident shields since the installer is so finicky about creating temp files and it's best if nothing interrupts it.

If all else fails as it did several times in my case as I was back and forth between using ZA and removing it I had to use Unlocker to forcefully delete the locked/protected files ZoneAlarm had partially and incorrectly installed, which ZA subsequently refused to uninstall because of the botched installation. Doing that "may" allow it to install correctly, nonetheless using Unlocker on the partially installed files is the only way I know of to remove the locked/protected files since they after all won't uninstall.

    Good luck!

  12. If you're unsure about your Windows registry safety create a known good registry backup before installing and/or using any software you're unsure about with ERUNT, it also doesn't hurt to manually create a System Restore point since not all installers trigger it to make a quick backup.

CCleaner's Issues ("registry cleaner") offers a sort of "wizard" during removal of invalid registry data to make a backup of the removed entries. Just make sure you store them in the My Documents folder so that you can easily find them should the need arise to restore them.

CCleaner's registry cleaner doesn't find allot of stuff that could be dangerous to remove, which in my opinion and belief allows CCleaner to have the safest registry cleaner I've ever used. However even it has been known to on very rare occasions find stuff that shouldn't be removed.

  13. Start your computer in Safe Mode! Not sure which option you need to choose however first start without Networking Support, and if that doesn't work try it with Networking Support to re-install ZA in Safe Mode.

ZoneAlarm version 5.5 and above have always failed to install properly on my system in Normal Mode, I've always had to use Safe Mode. The same goes for uninstalling it.

  14. I know what you mean. But it's nice to have them here too, right? I tried to start a similar thread awhile back and it went to crap within a day. LMAO :P

Well I think a simple approach would be to just link to Filehippo.com which I myself visit several times a day. Putting something like this in the profile signature would probably be better (just an example):

    Filehippo.com - the newest downloads

Filehippo.com also have small buttons/logos that link to their website, therefore I don't understand the need for this thread since there's already a software forum sub-section, and a freeware thread, albeit there also does need to be a pinned Commercial Software thread for those paid apps that people can't live without. Just my opinions right or wrong, anyways I won't post in this thread anymore so as to not ruin it.

  15. Why not just create a mirror of Filehippo.com, or say this thread is sponsored by Filehippo.com (being totally sarcastic of course)!

Anyways, since most of those downloads are on Filehippo.com why no just link to the main page or main sections, those updates aren't exactly difficult to find.

  16. Do you know if ME installs files in temp folders? It seems like something MS would do. :P

I've never used WinMe because of all the online chatter about it royally sucking, therefore I don't know anything about it. I doubt MS would install files into a temp directory, and allot of MS updates don't even use the mapped temp directory on a system they instead use: <root drive>:\Wutemp
