  1. So it rewrites a portion of the registry? If people really wanted to use it, wouldn't they just do it using regedit? [edit] : I don't see a point in using a code that one could do themselves by hand, unless, of course, they're in a lazy mood. [edit-edit] : It would actually work better, IMHO, if they did the reg-change by hand, because then they could see what they're changing, and change it back if it fscked it up. just my opinion.
  2. I enjoyed their report of FF's new rickroll protection and the 11 worst ff add-ons. I think bookmarked is a good enough term for this site.

    Opera 9.5 RC

Opera 9.5.1 beta dropped on Filehippo. Crash fixes, etc.
  4. Been using O9.5 exlusively for 2 days, (5 more days to gather opinion), but the only negative thing I can find with it so far, is the time it takes to use java applets. Example, the MUD i frequent, Achaea, (http://www.achaea.com/nexus/play.php for the java applet), it takes a few seconds longer to load, although, unlike Firefox, it positions the applet correctly after loading it. But, like I said, I'm at it for five more days as O9.5-only.
  5. I'm going to write this without crying. I'm going to write this without crying. Ionlyhave1GBofRAM. -breaks down in tears-
  6. I don't mind the new GUI, however, it seems to be taking longer to defrag my system. Compared to the general 1 hour it takes after a 'one-month-no-defrag' defrag, it takes 1 1/2-2 hours to do a 'hey-new-defraggler-release-with-2-weeks-no-defrag' defrag. My heart... One can hear thunder as it breaks.
  7. Do you know if PageDefrag is compatible with Vista? I've looked around but haven't come across a definitive answer. /ninja'ing thread...
  8. So, Firefox 3 will be 'officially' released today, so I thought this deserves some question. I have tested out Opera 9.5, been testing betas for FF3, and have played around with IE8, and have a few questions. But first, some observations : 1 ) Playing with opera 9.5, I haven't noticed any dramatic speed boosts that have been being tossed around multiple forums of late, although, it seems FF3 (RC3) loads images faster, while O9.5 loads test-based faster. Could be me, I dunno, but that's what I'm seeing. 2 ) IE8 doesn't seem to be too much different from IE7, however, it's still in beta, so, something could change between now and the release date. 3 ) Using IE7Pro, I've noticed certain things have gotten faster, certain things have gotten slower. I think the transition from page to page might be increased due to the ad-blocker, but, I can't be certain. 4 ) O9.5 loads faster than all of the browsers that I've tried, IE7/7Pro/8 loads second fastest, while I can read a page or two (at times), waiting for FF3RC3 to load. Now, my questions. 1 ) When someone says O9.5 is faster, do they mean booting time for the browser, or transition between sites? (because, as I've mentioned, if there's any improvement, there's a few milliseconds, at most.) 2 ) What security holes in FF3 are not in Opera? I mean, I can't be certain, but, a certain little widget informed me that there are, *ahem*, 0 in Opera 9.5, 3 in FF3RC3, 9 in IE7, 1 in Safari, and 2 in Konqueror. I'm almost absolutely positive that there cannot be be -0- security holes in Opera, I just think they're not looking in the right places. Again, however, I could be wrong. I'm a drop out, not a professional info-sec desk jockey 3 ) Why do people compare firefox as bare-bones, rather than assume that one uses the 'normal' extensions (ie - FlashBlock, NoScript, AdBlock Plus, etc)? I mean, sure, memory usage is lower, yadda yadda, but, all the same! Many also don't consider if the people have modded their engine to suit their needs. I don't know about most people, but if I'm specifically looking for a browser that suits my needs, I'm not going to be a technologically-impaired individual, but someone who knows what to do, and if they don't, how to find it. If you understand. -- I'm sure I have more questions, but... I'm out of caffeine and it's 4 in the ####ing morning -- Nighty night. NO FLAMERS, OR FANBOY FIGHTS PLZ. To quote a meme, I can haz mature convo?
  9. I checked out their site, and they -look- pretty decent, but, what would you say is the song that "defines" them as musicians? I'm going to hear some samples, but I'd love to hear -the- definitive track so I can judge what they're capable of at their best.
  10. I've heard the same thing, so I generally have only the firewall on at any given time. To do scans, I load them up individually, rather than have them running real-time. It saves me precious RAM, and gives me something to do with time I don't consider worth doing anything else with So, generally, if you have them on auto start-up, they -might- cause conflict, but, again, I'm not against having to run the executable myself.
  11. I use the following (not at the same time) : AVG 8.0 Free, Spybot 1.6 beta, AVG Anti-Rootkit (now discontinued, but I go to alot of "less-frequented" sites, and am unwilling to pay for net-security to get the AVG Security bundle, whatever it's called), Lavasoft Ad-Aware 2008, and am using F-Secure's firewall. I am not paying a cent, and haven't got anything worse than a tracking cookie in the last 6 months. (note : I am also a frequent downloader, and put myself at risk, so that should say something). Hope this helps.
  12. I noticed this the first time I used it. Although, it was temporary. It did it, I noticed, when defragging my roomie's WoW updater/information/extras/etc (essentially any file +1GB) during a total defrag. Afterwards, (especially with the new GUI, as I now can watch it "count back down") it goes back to what it was, and all is well. I was concerned, the first time 'round, but was quite satisfied later on. @legend: Most systems, I find, don't generally work "top-notch" if you have under a specific percentage of your total HD space. Could be circumstancial, but still. Think about deleting some unnecessary items and you shouldn't have any problems.
  13. I'm really new to the whole "upgrading drivers," and want to learn how to do it properly, and it's rather hard trying to keep track of everything on my own. It seems that most of these programs are bug-ridden and/or security-risks and/or rip-off scames, but, I'm always wondering. (although, this is the first driver-updater that actually gave me a choice in turning the toolbar/extra-crap off, so, that's why I was wondering). I honestly think that the manufacturer should put out a sort of "updater" in order to catch any updates that may or may not have been missed. So, I've fallen in with another scam? I found the link off of lifehacks, and they've always guided me right, but, everyone makes mistakes, no? Anyways, I skimmed through Intel's website, and I couldn't find any Vista drivers. I could only find up to XP-Professional, which disappointed me. (Not only that, but the whole embedded graphics card is a massive face-palm). Anyone have any tips on upgrading/updating drivers? I'd rather learn how to do it, than fsck my comp Thanks for the reply, though. -deletes RapidSync -
  14. Hello! I recently downloaded a program called RadarSync and ran it. Supposedly, it helps sniff out driver-updates, sort of like the hardware-equivalent of the free/software-sniffer from FileHippo. Anywho, I gave it a run, and it tells me I need 15 driver updates (mind you, not need), and gave me download points. I want to see if anyone else has any idea whether this is safe to do (also, I've made sure these were real drivers, as many people try to fsck with others, if you get my meaning.) My computer : (I'm new to getting my system specs, so I apologize) Intel Pentium Dual CPU 1.6 Ghz 1014 MB RAM Intel 82945G Express Chipset Family (driver : igdumd32.dll version : 7.14.0010.1461 ) Realtek High Definition Audio (driver : RTKVHDA.dll version : 6.00.0001.5548 ) This is all new to me, so, as well as giving me any tips possible, would someone please direct me (if you want, that is) to somewhere I could learn more about hardware/drivers? Anyways, so, looking at this, it looks ok, I think. Now, here are the Driver updates I supposedly need : Intel 82901G (ICH7 Family) SMBus Controller - 27DA - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current Version : 8.6.1.1002 - Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) PCI Express Root Port - 27D0 - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current Version : 8.6.1.1002 - Intel 82801GB/GR (ICH7 Family) LPC Interface Controller - 27B8 - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current Version : 8.6.1.1002 - Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) PCI Express Root Port - 27D2 - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current version : 8.6.1.1002 - Intel 945G/GZ/P/PL Processor to I/O Controller - 2770 - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current version : 8.3.0.1011 - Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current version : 8.2.0.1011 - Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C8 - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current version : 8.2.0.1008 - Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 27CC - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current Version : 8.2.0.1008 - Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27CB - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current version : 8.2.0.1008 - Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27CA - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current version : 8.2.0.1008 - Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C9 - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current version : 8.2.0.1008 - Intel 82801 PCI Bridge - 244E - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current version : 7.0.0.1011 - Compatible PS/2 Port Mouse ( Gigabyte Technology Corp.) - My version : 6.0.6001.1800 - Current version : 6.20.173.0 Realtek High Definition Audio - My version : 6.0.1.5548 - Current Version : 6.0.1.5624 - May I now mention that my hands are in muchos pain? Anyways, if anyone is able to enlighten me on whether or not it would be beneficial or detrimental to make these updates, I will be most gracious. If there is any other information necessary in order for you to figure out whether or not I should, etc, ask, and I will get it posted immediately. I thank you for even reading. BDKL
  15. Well, from my readout, although, I didn't think to log it, it was a few temp files from IE. Although, using CCleaner makes me drop my jaw at the size of the temp files that CCleaner catches for both IE and FF. 40MB/50MB, respectively, after 30 minutes of dedicated web-browsing. Thanks for the compliment on my handle I recently added the winapp2.ini file (it added .59MB of unnecessary logs), but, I'm still trying to figure out Vista, so I won't play around with nothing until then. I will, however, be looking into the beginner's guide, and the link. Thanks, Davey!
  16. I found that CCleaner doesn't get -all- of the useless files, as I usually supplement CCleaner with Steven Gould's CleanUp!. I waited a full week to test, and CCleaner deleted 100-150mb of unneeded files, running CleanUp! afterwards, this program deleted another 40-ish. What does this one catch that CCleaner does not, I wonder. Steven Gould's CleanUp! for a firsthand look on it. Small install, no spyware/adware of any sort. Any ideas?
  17. ^^^ Log added in. Tested each one seperately.
  18. So I can feel like I'm contributing in some small way, I'll add another that won't defrag/causes defrag to fail ::: C:\Windows\System32\wbem\Logs\WMITracing.log C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Scm\SCM.EVM and like the other two individuals, nothing from C:\System Volume Information is defragging/causes the degrag to fail. Anyone have any idea why it's doing this? When I get on next, I'll post the Defraggler debug log in here so someone might get a better idea. Oh, and I'm running Vista 32bit SP1, although I'm not sure which version, but upgraded from home. Or something Be well, and hope this helps.
