  1. What sort of games? There are hundreds of free games out there, but many parents may not approve of them. Abandonia has a good lot, Link Here, and so does Abandonia Reloaded, Link Here. However, many of these games are very old, and you may need to download DOSbox or another DOS emulator, as XP/Vista doesn't seem to run DOS games like they should be able to, but choose not to. Hrm. A few shooters come to mind, but, again, most of the games I play are either very old (ie - DOS games, NES games, etc.) or, when it comes to the internet, MUDs (Achaea, Aetolia, and the like)
  2. I generally try to avoid downloading at all from any sort of browser. When it's a "big" download, I find a torrent, as it's usually faster, and whatnot.
  3. @Forte : I've had many problems with Firefox and downloading from specific sites. Check if the file downloaded is the same size as it is supposed to be. It generally happens, I find, when downloading from heavily-used networks (so many times that I've downloaded from Ubuntu servers only to get it to break at 455 MB or something similar, and force me to re-download with cross-fingers. I can't be sure what causes it, though. I'm going to ponder awhile over any fixes one can do for it. (although, I've heard using DownThemAll and similar programs help a bit, although I've had them do this to me as well. CleanUp!'s download site generally did it, and the program is under a MB!!! It's annoying, but Firefox isn't the only one to do it. I've had it happen with Netscape, IE 6 through 7, -haven't tried 8b1 yet-, and Firefox 2. Perhaps it's browser-caused, or perhaps it's server-side rather than client.) [edit] : added a little more information. nothing was deleted from my original post
  4. No reason to be disrespectful, he explained why in his post. Glen, something that might help you see what you type is the magnifier. I believe that most versions of Windows sold these days come with it. It really does help. Anyways, I find that, pending on file sizes, it changes intermittently. For example, when I run Defraggler, it can take 10 minutes for the majority of my files, but, then it comes across some of the WoW files, and it takes the program from 10% to 100% in 40 minutes on bad days.
  5. Firefox 3 leads in memory usage, in test : http://dotnetperls.com/Content/Browser-Memory.aspx
  6. Why not switch the FAT32 format to an NTFS? My laptop came as FAT32, was completely horrible for defragging, and when I switched to NTFS it suddenly worked wonders.
  7. http://blog.wired.com/geekdad/2008/06/world-of-workcr.html It's quite odd.
  8. Ahhh... Security upgrade. I don't really look at them. >.> Anywho; like I said, I haven't had any problems with Java, since the upgrade. 10/06/2008, right?
  9. I just did a update check, and found no updates. I've not found an IE update in quite some time. Perhaps, it's a virus? Malware? I don't know what to say. I, too, have Vista Home Premium SP1, and use Java everyday. Do you have the latest build of Java? If not, it's on Filehippo.com. Do you think, perhaps, you can show a pic of what it says or does when it "doesn't work"?
  10. All in all, it works for me. I use IE7 occasionally, so why not let it run on my FF as well? It saves -me- the hassle of loading two seperate browsers -wink-
  11. I don't use Opera no more. I just wasn't comfortable with it. Anywho, Mobiusgames.net did end up working with IEtab. Strange.
  12. Just because you or your mother haven't come across any problems, doesn't mean anyone else might. I, for example, use minimal add-ons, keeping to what I need, and deleting what I don't. (Although, I go on monthly add-on sprees, to see if I 'click' with any.) I actually had my first crash since beta installation, but that was due to some add-ons that weren't fully compatible yet. And, if your mother installs large number of add-ons, it does nothing more than build up in memory. It's not viruses we're concerned about, it's user-friendliness and general overall clean running. Another note, Firefox is well-known to be a resource-hog. Install Firefox 2, and install the general add-ons, (not sure which, although there are quite a few lists that would give you an idea.), open up 15 tabs. I believe one test had the memory-usage at somewhere near 220-ish, which was just under IE7 with the same number of tabs open. Nonetheless, for alot of people, that can be alot of RAM that would be better spent elsewhere. GUI's are GUI's. You can customize it. They give you a basic one. You can choose to install new themes, which can do wonders for it, or you can play with Chrome yourself. They're not concerned with GUI's compared to being concerned about speed and functionality. Anyways, it's about bed-time for me... G'nite! [edit] : and just because I need to have my bedtime smoke, I'll add that, in general, those who are 'skilled' or have a 'general' grasp on computers are generally less likely to screw things up. I've found that novice users don't know what to look out for, and are very ignorant to the ways of the internet. I remember when I was a kid, I downloaded (if I may borrow the word) a plethora of viruses because I was... well... a kid. I didn't know that what I had downloaded were viruses! Now, however, I know what to look out for, I know what to trust. A 'really novice' user wouldn't know that, and end up, say, walking straight into a rickroll, as my friend is keen on saying.
  13. In the process of d/l'ing both. Will edit this post in regards to my experience with them. [edit] : Gah. The Avira site went from english... until I clicked a hyperlink to the free edition, and went into what I can only assume is German? ( I do not have a very handy grasp on languages other than french and english, and I can't even speak french ) RUN WITH AVAST! (now deleted) : I liked the skin. I liked the feel. I didn't like it not letting me delete it's start-up entry. >.> That was it's only fault, I found. RUN WITH AVIRA : So far, my only complaint is the ad that popped up while I was updating. Beyond that, I ain't seeing nothing wrong with it. It's been running for something like 10 minutes and is already at 9.5%, which is generally fast.
  14. [edit] : Just came across this news http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08...08&from=rss [original post] : Here's what my setup looks like right now :
  15. I checked it out (mobiusgames) It looked all messed up with FF3, but was actually cleaner with IE7. -skims through source- Ok. For some reason, it seems that FF3 doesn't like to use all CSS functions. Could explain why it is so in Opera as well? Oh well. heh.
  16. I just like to get personal opinions of them. Some might 'look' nice or 'run smoothly', but, unless I purposely infect my computer, there is no way to tell if they are accurate or not. If you understand what I mean.
  17. Someone deleted the uninstall entry for AVG 8, so I need to reinstall in order to kick it swiftly... ... and I've never seen so much violence in Northern Ontario (drunks generally, as there are at least 7 bars within 5 miles around my house.). I was never shot at or mugged.
  18. I'm not going to respond to the first half. 'nuff said. Secondly, I can't seem to find this problem you're having. I've been using Firefox 3 since beta 5, and haven't seen anything resembling what you're saying. CCleaner cleans it up, just as it does IE7, and just as it does Opera 9.5...besides, I also have it set so that everytime I close Firefox, it automatically deletes my browsing history, download history, saved forms, blah, blah, you all know the rest. At the same time, I do not allow it to retain any form of history, and I only allow cookies to last for as long as my session lasts.
  19. ...Did anyone else accidentally download baby 0.1?
  20. 1 ) Real-time scanning isn't too much of a problem, because generally all I do is play MUDs. When I do have need of scans, it's when I traverse across hyperlinks I've not been before, or when I download something, to give it a test-run. 2 ) Aye. I'm in the process of re-downloading AVG 8 because of the resource-hogginess, plus the forced Firefox add-on, which, by ironic circumstances, isn't compatible with Firefox 3. 3 ) So, now, down the count... Your suggestion is either : ( a ) Avast or ( b ) Avira AntiVir? 4 ) Aye. Northern Ontario, unfortunately. I miss my Toronto [edit] : just had to fix my brackets... forced smilies and whatnot
  21. Is it, by any chance, this link, bookmarked? The new style that they have is that they bring your bookmarks into your typing, as a way to avoid having to fully type everything. I can't remember what I did, (it could be an add-on), but I have it so it doesn't do it anymore. And, in a sec, I'll check to see if I come across problems on wwe.com. Edit this in a sec. [edit] : I'm not coming across any problems. Can you specify a video that might be buggy for you? [edit-edit] : Ohhh, wait. Did you do a new install of the Windows Media Player 11 Plug-in? If you didn't, it won't work. I'll find the link later.
  22. I've been doing some window-"shopping", and am stuck between choosing one of the following anti-virus programs. -Bitdefender 10 Free (only thing I'm not sure of is whether it's vista-compatible) -Avast! Home Edition -AVG 8.0 (the only one I truly have experience with) --- If anyone has any better ones, please point them out?
  23. Well, for me, no. Vista doesn't use the website to update no more I just installed it for the fact that some people claimed it wouldn't install for them. I've just been too lazy to uninstall. I actually use User Agent Switcher to go on sites that have the 'IE-or-GTFO' kind of layout (or any site that, you know... has a layout that tells you 'no-way-you-have-x-browser-we-want-y-browser'. [edit] : but, from the website : http://ietab.mozdev.org/ the first thing I notice is the first line : Believe it or not, we really ran Windows Update from Mozilla/Firefox.. So... I guess you can
  24. I dunno what went wrong with you. Currently, I use the following add-ons : Adblock Plus Adblock FilterSet.G Updater Basics Download Statusbar Feed Sidebar Firebug 1.2.0b3 FireGestures Flashblock ForecastFox Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer Nightly Tester Tools (currently disabled. its only there when I decide to test those supposedly 'incompatible') Open IT Online User Agent Switcher IETab Skins - Aquatint Black Gloss, Past Modern. I've not had any problems so far. Generally, what most people seem to come across, (ie - crashes, slowness, etc) I've not found. I've had nothing but smooth sailing since beta 5. It's odd.
