    Woodworking?

Actually, it looks to be quite safe. Wood burns at 450F, so it'll be rather hard to set a fire .

    Woodworking?

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you hardware oriented geeks (like myself ) knew anything about working with electricity and wood. I have this (relatively) old Dell computer sitting in my basement, and I was going to tear it out of its shell, and replace it with, well, lumber. I guess I'm concerned about two things - fire and heat dissipation. Obviously heat dissipation is going to require some decent airflow, but I think I know how to handle that. The only concern I have is some sort of fire starting. What timber will have the highest burn point? If I have my motherboard on spacers between the actual timber, and proper airflow, is fire even a concern? I'm doing a lot of my own research but any comments/suggestions are welcome. Also, if this moves forward, there will be lots of pictures.
  5. Ugh! Why is Microsoft doing this! If they wanted a 'better' OS, they'd go back to XP SP2, and take a look at the following things: 1. The Registry. What is this junk useful for? If you want a program to do something scheduled, then a script of some sort that isn't hidden behind 10,000 tabs of confusing junk should be written! Every 'installed' program should be contained in it's C:\Program Files\*\ folder, and nothing more! 2. The filesystem. We were promised WinFS - was that leading to increased performance? The filesystem should be inherently strong, not needing regular defragmentation. 3. Security. While I think the 'Windows has blocked.... ..... ... continue?' aspect of Vista is too constricting, I think there needs to be some sort of 'root' access just like every other OS out there. You know what though? It isn't that complicated! When Windows is installed, you create an admin account. Windows should force you to put a password on that account, and create a non-admin account for regular use. When you're on the admin account (which you shouldn't be unless it'd be cumbersome to be using the non-admin account), you can do all of your stuff without password / continue prompts. When you're in the non-admin account, you should just need some sort of prompt! Think like using su/sudo. I gotta run but there's a lot more that could be done before the GUI changes.

  8. Er, I didn't mean to leave Firefox on the 'uninstall' list. Just a mistake . Yeah I understand your point but the majority of his stuff is useless, and he's running low on HDD space anyhow. CCleaner's hotfix uninstaller cleaning? I haven't heard of that. I'll look for it. Thanks a bunch.
  9. So, I'm leaving him this message, and I just want to make sure that nothing that he uninstalls will 'cripple' his computer (it's a Compaq Presario v5000). The list of garbage is rather long, and I don't actually expect anyone to read through all of it, though someone saying, 'everything looks good,' is always encouraging . The original list of programs that CCleaner produced is at the bottom, the first half is just the stuff I would remove if it were mine . Here's all the junk that you have installed on your laptop. I would remove a lot, and then defrag overnight. That's the best performance increase you can get.... aside from the RAM that you don't want to buy :].Here's what I would remove:Adobe Reader 6.0.1AOL Instant Messenger // Drop this and HydraIRC, use MirandaIM or PidginAOL Uninstaller (Choose which Products to Remove)Conexant AC-Link AudioConTEXTCP_AtenaShokunin1ConfigCP_CalendarTemplates1cp_LightScribeConfigcp_OnlineProjectsConfigCP_Package_Basic1CP_Package_Variety1CP_Package_Variety2CP_Package_Variety3CP_Panorama1Configcp_PosterPrintConfigcp_UpdateProjectsConfigDeviceManagementQFolderFullDPAppQFolderGoogle Toolbar for Internet ExplorerGraphing Calculator ViewerGuild Wars // Unless you still playHP DVD Play 2.0HP Help and SupportHP Imaging Device Functions 6.0HP Photosmart Premier Software 6.0HP Software UpdateHP User Guides 0025HP User Guides--System RecoveryHP Wireless Assistant 2.00 C1HpSdpAppCoreAppHydraIRCInstantShareDevicesjetAudio Basic // GO FOOBAR!!Kaspersky Online ScannerLexmark 730 Series // KEEP IF YOU'RE GOING TO RESHARE THE PRINTERLightScribe 1.4.56.1 // USELESS FEATUREMathReader 5Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007 (English)Microsoft WorksMozilla Firefox (2.0.0.4)Mozilla Sunbird 0.3a2 // RAINLENDER / GOOGLE ARE BETTERMyDSC2Opera 9 // FIREFOX? 11. My guitar: It's classical (smaller body than a dreadnought acoustic, a wider neck), D'Addario nylon strings, with a Rosewood body and an ebony fretboard... the tone is really great, and it doesn't get too 'twangy' when you play pantochello. There are better guitars out there, but this one will last me for years.
  12. Wireless N is no better than MIMO-enabled wireless G. It won't give you greater speeds or better connectivity, only better range. I personally like Netgear just as much as Linksys. Look for sales in your local electronics/office supplies stores.

I gave you as best as I could some sort of empirical data to back my claim up; it's true though that it's only speculation. If that didn't convince you then my only other observation is that you might be too confident in where you get your information from. But hey if you're happy I guess that's all that matters...

Consider the direction of a projectile when it's forced from a single point. It travels in all directions from the source. Not only would the immediate area absorb most of the damage, there would be a large amount of nails per person. Have you ever made a DRANO bomb? Or in chemistry class, dealt with an exothermic reaction? Also it wasn't a single building, it was a car parked in a 'nightclub district' where people are behind walls, multiple walls. Gasoline (or petrol, if that's what you call it) doesn't burn quickly enough to do this type of damage. Let me just reiterate that I'm not trying to make light of a bomb threat. It's horrible and I don't condone it, but this isn't the same magnitude as what we're perceiving it to be.
  15. I'm seconding the 'faster than' OOo part, that's what made me use it for so long, but after a while I went back to OO.
  16. I'll stick with my Cordoba . Cool guitar though.

1,700 people is a lot of sq. feet. Doesn't that seem high to you? You would have to have one hell of a bomb to do that! Look, if each person was standing directly next to each other, each person taking up 1 sq. foot, then we still have 1700 sq. feet of occupied space! A mile is 5280 feet, so we have a third of a sq. mile being occupied here! That's a HUGE bomb! Doesn't that make 1700 deaths seem a *bit* high? Not to mention that most people won't be in such close proximity to each other anyways.... I'm not doubting that there was some sort of danger, and I'm truly glad for the response, but I think this is a instance of things being blown out of proportion. To answer your question, I don't know what level of prowess this guy has when it comes to making bombs, but it appears that he knows enough to tear down the facade that people are making this out to be. Something you might find really interesting: Now you might reconsider what the NYT wrote.

  19. No startup entries are necessary for Windows to start up normally. By the way, Anthony, you should try using your KB/Mouse without SetPoint. I have a Logitech S510 wireless 'desktop' and it works just fine without the software. I personally didn't like the software one bit when I installed it .
  20. I don't think that Ron Paul is the best candidate, but nonetheless he has a lot more respect for what this country was founded on than say, the current administration. I don't think that it's putting your head in the sand and pretending there are no problems in the world - it's saying that they aren't completely our business! We're in an unjustified war, and it's getting worse as time goes on, and Ron Paul is just one of the candidates that will make a positive impact. I don't understand why you're not worried - you have something granted to you by law being taken away, and all you can show is apathy. That's scary, if anything.
