  1. Hehe just a side note, I wouldn't rely on the Windows defrag engine to tell your how well / poorly your hard drive is fragged .
  2. Several of the folders (all of them perhaps) will be regenerated each time you restart your computer.

    USB 2.0 vs 1.1

    Nope, the interfaces are identical.
  4. I disagree, DiskTrix UltimateDefrag has been nothing less than stellar for me. I even bought it (usually I'd just go with freeware, but this program is ridiculously amazing).
  5. There is another account on my machine, titled ASP.NET Machine A... Obviously .NET is from Microsoft, and ASP is a web related topic, but why the account is there, I have no idea. Is it safe to remove? Edit: Found the answer - http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/aspdot.php
  6. No, due to the differences in how certain files are stored. That and there is no registry, no install detail, etc.
  7. Bad sectors do corrupt and spread; is it the same hard drive? If not, I would start backing data up. The other possibility, if for whatever reason you're running FAT32, is that the filesystem itself is causing you issues. FAT32 is not journaled and I have heard all too often that certain files, and in some cases, parts of certain files, are being moved without notice.
  8. Don't teach him bad habits! /slap /slap! First of all, start fresh, start modern. XHTML is all lower-case. Secondly, there are some tags to avoid like the plague. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a wonderful implementation, and I suggest you read up on it, as it goes hand-in-hand with XHTML. The second thing I would reccommend, aside from a bunch of tutorials (W3 Schools really are great), is a good editor. I use ConTEXT (www.context.cx), it's rather awesome. If you have any questions, just ask.
  9. You wouldn't believe me if I told you \=.

    Freeware!

Just want to point out that dbPowerAmp really is the converter that has the reputation for being the highest quality / most accurate.
  11. Hey guys, I was just looking at the February desktop thread and thinking, "Well, I'm not at home and this thread is going to the hills soon, so I might save them somewhere...." and then figured that other people might find it useful as well. So, here are all the visual styles provided in the February desktop thread. If you have more, please reply with them! 12. It's Vista CG (for Windows XP, of course), you can find a bunch at http://www.crystalxp.net/galerie/en.cat.3.htm The lack of opacity in the media player app (foobar2000) is a native option to that program.
  13. 28 Processes, 285MB Ram usage. I'd like to note though that two of those apps are Firefox and Paint.NET. Aside from that, I have a bunch of stuff like foobar2000, MirandaIM, UltimateDefrag, and such going.
  14. I won't be upgrading to Vista. I'll be buying Cedega instead, and finally moving forever ^^.

    extractnow

Considering the computer literacy of this group, I'm surprised that so many of you are so concerned over a GUI that you never have to look at. Right click -> 7zip -> Extract...

    7zip has no match.
  17. Take a look at Sidewinder computers: http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/home.html They have some good sales on coolers.
  18. Turn your resolution down all the way, say to 800x600 (or around that range). Turn the color down to 8-bit. Turn off your computer (for about a minute). Turn it back on. Do you still hear the sound? I'm assuming that either your video card fan or north bridge fan is going crazy trying to keep up with the display that your monitor is pulling. Both of those fans are very small in diameter and will reach a high number of RPMs if you push them.
  19. Ok, so here's my little rant on Vista. Numero uno: People are getting way too excited over flaws found in the operating system's debut. It should be painfully obvious that this happened with XP, with ME, with 2k, with 98, and so forth. There's just no testing that a company can do internally that will match up to real world use - at least with software on this scale. Flaws are always going to be found in new operating systems. Number two: Do you like Vista because of the eye candy? Well, then, my friend you're in the wrong boat. If eye candy is your (only) primary concern, give Fluxbox, KDE, or Gnome a whirl (on a *nix OS, certainly). If you like Vista for DX10 (also in the "eye candy umbrella"), well, I suppose you don't really have a choice (with the given exceptions of Wine, Cedega, Darwine, et al). Nummer drie: Make sure you know what you're getting into when you choose Vista. I don't exactly wear a tin foil hat, but I do think that Vista has some "big brother" qualities. Namely, it supports DRM, the whole idea behind the TCPA ( http://www.againsttcpa.com/ ), and the fact that Microsoft has a near-monopoly over the desktop market.

    Bells and whistles .
  21. I don't browse the internet in such a manner where that would bring any issues, and when I did have AV installed (about the past year, displaced a month or so), I never found anything. If I have suspicions, I'll use Kaspersky's online scanner or BitDefender's online scanner. I'll give that HD Tune a try. dxdiag shows DirectX at 9.0c. Edit: HD Tune showed SMART enabled and that (what I assumed to be a check for bad sectors) health scan came up 100% green. Perhaps a memory test would be next in line?
  22. Well, once again, I've experienced a completely (not completely) random freeze. I was playing Guild Wars, minding my 34C temps, when all of a sudden -everything- stops. And not just for a minute. I let it sit for an hour before I held that button on the front of my case. I do suspect the hard drive because, well, it's the hardware of lesser build quality. I suppose though, there are plenty of other factors that may cause my computer to freeze completely. Any ideas? I had been playing Guild Wars for about an hour before it happened, but I don't think temperature was at all a problem.
