  1. I would have to say that this looks like it may be a bug. Then the problem becomes, what's causing it when so many others are using the current version without this bug. I'm wondering what sort of other system tools you may have for security. Many of my questions lean this way. What I'm getting at, is if any of those programs may have some sort of protection for the System Restore. I'm really hoping not, but are you running any of the Norton/Symantec or McAfee products? And/or is the computer in question a Toshiba. I think they have their own special backup system. Maybe this will point someone else into thinking along these lines too and have a solution for you. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  2. My first thing to try would be to turn off the system restore and reboot. Turn it back on, reboot again. Then see if you get the same error. To turn off/on system restore - right click on the "My computer icon and choose properties, and then from the box that comes up choose the system restore tab. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm PS to all the regulars - Howdy! And long time no see! I've been working a LOT and haven't been able to chip in as much. I'm still keeping an eye out for the posts, but I'll still be working a heavy load for the next few weeks and I'm sure I'll be back on track.
  3. I imagine that the file is listed as having been deleted because CCleaner has done that, but for the NSA level (7 passes) of deletion, it will take a considerable amount of time. Each bit must be written over and and changed/erased. Depending on the size of the iso you were getting rid of then it really could take a long time. If CCleaner still finds it the next time you restart it, then you may have to use a utility like "Unlocker", please use this with care, there's not much it won't delete, including system files. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  4. OK, so for CCleaner let's try this one - http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No...lish_d4191.html - If you bookmark that link, you'll always get the "slim" version without the Yahoo! Toolbar and it will always have the latest version. Next, go get the latest version of Firefox which is version three (3). If you use any of the "Advanced" settings, make sure you check the "Save all settings to INI file" box and then go the CCleaner folder in the Programs folder and copy that ".ini" file and save it somewhere else where it won't be deleted, so you can use it again later. Before you install the new version of CCleaner again, I would do a complete uninstall of CCleaner from the Add/Remove Programs from the control panel first. Reboot the computer and see if the Yahoo! Toolbar is in your explorer options, if it is, then use the Add/Remove Programs to remove it also. Make sure you don't have any extra programs open when you start your install. Then try the new "Slim" version of CCleaner. At this point, do not use the ".ini" file you saved yet until we see if Windows works right with the new version. If it still crashes then we'll know for sure that CCleaner has a conflict with something else on your system. I just don't know about Pando, I had to look it up to see what it was. I'm not saying that it is bad, I just don't know and haven't really had anytime to look at it. I'm also sure that the rest of the people here in the forums will also have some suggestions for you. Also I don't speak Spanish, but I know some of the folks here do and if the translation gets to be too much, someone will help. Please let us know what works and doesn't. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  5. This sounds pretty serious so, for now, some questions. 01. What version of CCleaner, including the version number and if you used the "Full" or "Slim" version? 02. Where did you download it? 03. What version of Windows, including the service pack version number? 04. How did you go about removing the Yahoo! Toolbar? Meaning did you use the Windows "Add/Remove", the one built into CCleaner in the Tools section, or did you just delete the Yahoo! folder in the "Programs" folder? 05. What browsers do you have? Internet Explorer and version 6, 7, or 8beta? Firefox 2 or 3? Safari(really hope not - security issues)? 06. Is the Yahoo! Toolbar showing up in the Windows Explorer? Even if you don't see it, right click on a blank area in the area above the address bar and see if it's an option. 07. Are your Windows updates, up to date? 08. When you say that you couldn't open "My PC or Windows Explorer", what exactly to you mean? Because either your computer will boot into Windows, and the Explorer won't open and you're just looking at the blank desktop background, or the system just won't boot into Windows at all. And/or when you say "My PC" are you talking about the "My Computer"? If you can list the answers by number, we can better help you, and it will be much appreciated. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  6. I did a quick search here in the forums first and found the following link. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showto...l=vista+autorun I can't speak for the program they suggest, although even as a tech and as a very paranoid downloader, it does look to be legit. And they do give info for doing it manually. I would also suggest looking in the Defender and see if CCleaner is listed there to be allowed, or not, to run. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  7. Normally I would say this is a job for CCleaner, so this blows. I would do a CCleaning, do the uninstall, reboot, check the programs folder to make sure the folder is actually gone and if not, delete it. Then do a reinstall and see if that gets you up to date. If not, I would still use CCleaner to do the registry scan and cleaning (a couple of times to make sure you get it all). If that didn't work then, I would start the same process over except that you could use the portable version. I did a search to see where other files might be and you might see if you've got one in "C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch" and if so, delete it too. Even the ".ini" file if you use it, will be in the CCleaner program folder. Also I did a quick registry scan using a cool little program called "RegLite" and found a few entries on that machine and the only ones I think I would make sure were gone were - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CCleaner HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\CCleaner Now, I'm not a software writer, and don't know that these would make any difference but getting rid of them couldn't hurt after the uninstall and before reinstalling CCleaner. I, as well as the CCleaner software writers, will be interested to hear what you've done to cure this, so even if you do get it please report back again. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  8. I agree about installing extra toolbars, my personal preference is for the Google Toolbar since it "lives" on your computer and doesn't require that you be online for it to come up which makes starting Firefox, or heaven help you if you're still using IE, faster. All that being said, the Yahoo toolbar isn't malicious and in fact it offers the yahoo anti-spyware scanner which is OK, not the top (SpySweeper or Spyware Doctor), but pretty good and very fast. And I'm sure the folks at Piriform are either making some money or get some hosting from Yahoo by including it, and that helps them give out CCleaner for free. The link to the builds page above is good and also the one at MajorGeeks.com is static as well, even if the version changes. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  9. If possible, can you post a screen shot of this issue, if you don't have someplace to upload to, Picasa is my first free (and favorite) choice and Flickr is also free and both have pretty easy signup. You can then point to the url with the button above the box you post in here. Or maybe you can refer to one of mine. See the link below, and if you want to use one of those pics, click on the screen shot and you'll get a larger version to link to. I've been using CCleaner for quite some time now, and don't get what you are talking about. I'm not trying to be rude, I just don't get it. Also, please tell us what version of CCleaner you're using, along with the version of Windows (XP Pro, home - Vista Home Premium, Ultimate...), and if you're using something like Window Blinds. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  10. For the scanning I posted this before so I'm going to point you to that post. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showto...mp;#entry105562 Also it sounds to me like you are also talking about "Favorites", "Feeds", or "History", with "History" being the one that you are trying to clear. Did you try closing everything, running CCleaner, and then reboot? Are the appropriate check boxes selected for IE in the settings for CCleaner(from the link you'll notice that I keep my history on purpose)? Also in the advanced settings you need to uncheck the box to keep files newer than 48hours. This last one really could be what's missing for you. Give these a try and let us know what's happened. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  11. A couple of things... First, the double posting may have been because you've double clicked to add your post, you almost NEVER have to double click when using a web page, I suspect that you did that or weren't patient enough and clicked again which gave us double posts. Second, Davey's right but may not have given quite enough info. After you run CCleaner with all other programs closed, you need to reboot the computer and that should finish the cleaning. The IE .dat and some of the other IE files are removed after you reboot and before Windows loads and those files are automatically rebuilt by Windows when they're needed. Next, your first problem is using IE, get with the program and switch to Firefox and have a faster, and safer experience on the web. That being said, sometimes you have to use IE because some web designer is too lazy to build a decent web site that is web compliant so that multiple browsers can use it. There is also another reason for this, and that is so they can exploit the security flaws in IE and infect your computer. Have you done your security scans of your computer since you started to notice this issue? If you could give us just a bit more info we might be able to better help you. What AntiSpyware and AntiVirus programs are you using? Depending on what those programs are, the files that won't delete may be locked down by the bad guys(malware) or even the good guys (anti-malware). Is the user account you're on an Administrator or user account? Is the version of IE you're using 7 or the beta of 8? And last but not least, so you don't think we're picking on you, a week ago Tuesday was "Update Tuesday" and in fact, Microsoft may have done something funky. Make sure you have all your updates done, and you might try to reinstall the latest version of CCleaner. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  12. Hopefully this will be my last response in this matter. I'm sorry that I can't communicate this clearly enough. These files will always come back automatically once they are deleted, and it simply does not matter how they are deleted, or by what means, program, or method, they are deleted. If you use a program like CCleaner, or if you delete them manually, they will ALWAYS come back since they are needed by Windows in order to function properly. It's not any strange behavior that they come back, that is the way Microsoft designed Windows to function. If you still don't understand what I'm telling you, maybe you could fill in your location information in your profile such as what country you live in, and what language you normally speak. Or at least post it when you respond next time. This is a very good forum, and there are people who are advanced users that use CCleaner from all around the world who might be able, and happy, to translate for you. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  13. I don't know this to be a fact, just my guess that it was just hidden in those other versions. Those files are going to be replaced each time they're deleted. You could delete them 100 times in a row and the very next time they're needed and not there Windows just puts a fresh copy back. They truly are nothing to worry about. Even if you use a heavy weight file removal tool like Unlocker (use with extreme caution if you don't know what you're deleting then don't use it), those files will still come back each time. Your best bet is to run CCleaner and then reboot. After that you can rest assured that the system has had a good cleaning. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  14. Don't worry about them, they're just rebuilt automatically by Windows when you reboot or even open a folder. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  15. I'm not an Opera user, but from what I read, are you leaving it open when CCleaner runs? If so you should have it closed. If not, I'm sure somebody else will be along soon to look at this. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  16. I do this stuff for a living and I agree 100% with mushu13 (and Davey, not enough caffeine or just up too late? ). Since this just came up in another post, I'm going to point you there for some instructions I gave on quick, easy, and effective scanning. Malware Scanning Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  17. http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings....OptionsAdvanced What Keith is pointing out is exactly right. Also you'll want to reboot after the cleaning to finish clearing out some of the IE stuff. Index .dat will be rebuilt by the OS automatically but the old one will have been removed. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  18. You should scan your computer with a better scanner than SB or AdAware, I still use both in certain situations but for a better free scan you can't beat the one given away with the Google Pack. Go to pack.google.com and get only the Spyware Doctor for the downloads (you can get the rest of the stuff if you want but for speed sake I would do that later). Don't mess with the Norton Scanner, it's likely to slow down your computer. Once Spyware Doctor is installed go to "Settings" > "Scan Settings" and check the boxes for "Scan Alternative Data Streams" and "Scan for rootkit hidden files". You can also modify your schedule for when the scanner runs, I set mine to AM and Sunday for the full scan as opposed to PM and Friday, you should decide when you won't be using the computer so it won't affect what you're doing. After that use the update and let it get it's first full update. Then your ready to run your scans. If you're really impatient, just run the intelliscan and see what you get, but if you've got the time, a full scan would be better. You'll probably have a few items that Spybot and AVG missed. Like I said before, I still use Spybot in some situations and I almost always use AVG AntiVirus. The antispyware feature of AVG is not really in the same league as the others and I turn it off in the new version 8 as it also slows down the browsing quite a bit. The top two antispyware programs are SpySweeper and Spyware Doctor. Those two are usually a head and shoulders above all the rest and fight it out for who is on top. This free version of Spyware Doctor isn't the full featured version, but for free it's an excellent scanner and uses the same definitions file as the full version. Then after you've removed the spyware, you should check your logs or settings in AVG and make sure it's had a chance to run a full scan. Hopefully after all the scans you should be back to normal. If not you can try an old trick that is to simply create a new user account. Check to see that everything is working in the new account and back up your data from the old account and move it to the new one. Once that's done, delete the "broken" account. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  19. To show the updates in the Add/Remove at the top of the window have you checked the little box that says "show updates"? It will be listed as "Windows XP Service Pack 3". Some SP3 links that may be helpful. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389 http://www.viclovan.com/Windows%20XP%20Ser...%20Pack%203.htm As for restoring the files, I suspect you could put them back in whatever temp folder they live in for the installation by just expanding the SP3 stand-alone exe and copying the new i386 folder there. To expand SP3, or almost any of the other stand-alone installers, right click on it and use 7zip to extract to "WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU" and that will create a new folder with the files from SP3 inside it. Also a small point of order, it's called CCleaner as in Crap Cleaner not CCC or "CC Cleaner" as many people incorrectly identify it, Komando comes to mind (I don't listen often but if I'm board and have really nothing else in the car...). Not really a big deal, just sticking up for the guys(and maybe gals) who code one of the best pieces of software ever, that's all! Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  20. I'll see if I can get my hands on a Vista computer tomorrow and find the paths and how to get this thing right. I spent some time looking and did find a link to the Microsoft site to download it. I even found a post on a CNET forum that I made and forgot about. I read it and found myself thinking that this is exactly what I would do. How's that for forgetful? I saw my own name at the end of the post and cracked up. I would probably reinstall, disable, and ignore it. Or just ignore the listing in CCleaner unless it's causing trouble. Also I don't know if this might make CCleaner "see" defender, but did you turn off the defender service (if it's still there)? Right click "Computer" > choose "Manage" then go down to the bottom of that box and under "Services and Applications" (I think this is the same for XP or Vista), > "Services" and find Defender and double click on it and "Disable" it. Just a thought... Either way I'll keep looking, I really dislike Defender quite a bit so if I can find a good way to help, I will. *
  21. Time to go back a bit. NOT a system restore, but how this should be done. In Vista, go to the add remove programs in the control panel, which in Vista is just "Programs" and look for the "Vista add-ons" or features. I can't remember exactly since I don't have Vista and am winging this from memory. This also might be found from the same window that has the Microsoft Update page, I know this is a long way around but you should be able to find it. Once there, go ahead and add the Defender back to your system. Once you've done that you should now have two choices on how to deal with it. Open Defender and there are several check boxes in the settings that you want to deselect so that Defender doesn't run on your system. The last one to pay attention to is about not letting other users have access to it or something of that nature. Close Defender and reboot your system. Now it will no longer run. The next choice if you now want to remove it the right way, is to go back where you added it to your system is to remove it there. The reason you want to do it this way, instead of just deleting the folders where it lives, is so that the system should get rid of most all of the traces of it in the registry, hidden folders, and settings folders. Then once you run CCleaner and the registry cleaner it should be rid of Defender and now probably won't show up in CCleaner again, unless you add it back to the system. Either way, even if it is listed, just ignore it. I have it turned off like I've suggested in the first method, on several client machines and CCleaner has never had any issue with it. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  22. In Safari you should clean it manually by using the "clear recent searches" from the drop down menu at the search window. Now, I hate to be one who starts a browser war discussion but in this case it's merited. PLEASE don't use Safari as it is even less safe than IE, and that's saying something. If it's just about the looks, go find an add-on theme for firefox to make it look like Safari, I'm sure there are many good ones. While NO browser is completely safe, right now Firefox is probably about as good as it gets. Even Microsoft has pointed out the problems with Safari, that must have made 'Bill' feel pretty good to get to point out someone else's browser problems. Anyway here are some links to articles about the problems with Safari. PayPal to Safari users: 'Ditch it' Safari 3.1.1 Still Not Safe. URL Spoofing Flaw Confirmed- Research website claims both Mac OS X and Windows users of Safari are facing a "less critical" vulnerability this time May 31, 2008 Ah, the irony! Microsoft says Safari isn't safe on Windows And last but not least, some info about Firefox and the page to download it. Stay Secure on the Web Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  23. Have you tried running the registry cleaner yet? You'll need to run it 2 to 3 times usually to clean it completely. Run the cleaner and reboot. I think maybe this could remove any of the references to the defender. I will say that even if it doesn't, it shouldn't be a problem. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  24. This sounds to me more like a security question. What I mean is, that it sounds like either you have a security problem in the form of a virus/malware or it's your security program and one or the other is blocking the cleaning. What would be helpful is information about the security programs you use and their versions. Also what service pack are you up to - none, 1, 2, or 3. How often or when was the last time you've run these programs? Also have you recently installed other programs? These things may help us (forum members) try to help you. Good Luck! Vic VicLovan.com http://www.viclovan.com/ccleaner2settings.htm
  25. Closing all the programs that CCleaner is attempting to clean is the way it's supposed to be used. If you're not getting a warning to close the browser and it was open, then one of two things has happened, one and most likely, you've seen this warning in the past and then checked the box not to warn you again, or two, you have a bug where it's not giving you the warning. I would check the Options - Advanced and check to see that the "Hide warning messages" box is unchecked. If it is unchecked, and you're not getting a warning message like I always get, then you need to report that back here or in a new post. Also it sounds to me like you may have your browser temp folders set with a large amount of space allowed for your web browsers. And I don't know how often you're using CCleaner, I set mine to run weekly, at which time it's needed! Here are the locations to set the cache in FF and IE. Firefox - Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cache - this should be set to a fairly small number. I've left mine at the default values and it's set at 76.8 MB of space. I'm not sure how it's figured in FF so your size may be different. IE7 - Windows Control Panel > Internet Properties > General > Browsing history > Settings > "Disk space to use:". This one is usually set to a percentage of the hard drive size so it can be set to a very high size and should be set to something much smaller like 50 - 100 MB. IE6 - Windows Control Panel > Internet Properties > Temporary Internet files > Settings > "Amount of disk space to use:". This one is usually set to a percentage of the hard drive size so it can be set to a very high size and should be set to something much smaller like 50 - 100 MB. Good Luck!
