    Gimpshop!

Interesting, looks pretty cool. Especially since Photoshop costs alot and Gimp is free. Also, with Photoshop CS, I think that Photoshop started go down hill.
  2. The firewall in Windows XP SP2 is very easy and not in the way. But I suspect she might not be an experienced computer user, so it would probably be better to go with a firewall that also blocks outgoing connections (the firewall in XP SP 2 dont do this). ZoneAlarm is a free (as in beer) firewall that is very popular and I hear good things about it. It is probably a good thing to install Mozilla Firefox and let her use that for webbrowsing instead of Internet Explorer, to prevent her from getting nasty spyware and adware, etc. She should definitly have an antivirus software too. AntiVir and avast! are two free (as in beer) antivirus programs. Another good idea would be to create a separate user account for her, so she dont have administrator privilegies. - As for Linux, it is never too late to try it. If you never used it, I suggest a LiveCD, which you just boot the operating system from the CD without have to install anything on the harddrive. A LiveCD is easy too use. If you have a CD burner you can download one and burn it. Or you can ask a friend todo it for you, or you can buy one online they're very cheap, or even order one for free online. Ubuntu Linux can be ordered for free at http://shipit.ubuntu.com/ Maybe you'll fall in love? Linux in great in terms of freedom and security.
  3. They are just IE but slightly different, it is still the IE core which dont follow the webstandards. People tend to attack what is popular. These people wont care if it's open source or not, they attack to be able to infect users with spyware so they can make money.
  4. I havent used it, but I guess you can use your own IP list with it? And maybe the IP list that ships with the application isnt perfect, but that doesnt mean PeerGuardian is crap. When I read that news on the link, I got upset, it is sad that there is people like that who steal the money from donations. =/
  5. GIMP is not strictly Linux, it is exists a port for Microsoft Windows too. http://www.gimp.org/ http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/ http://www.inkscape.org/
  6. Well, I hope the controller is optional and there are more other ordinary controllers. However, the controller seems interesting, I read a review about it, that it was kind of cool for airplane games and such that it was used in a game to swing a sword. I also noticed that Nintendo have finaly decided to use discs on this system instead of cassettes as they used in prior consoles, which should make it easier for people to get their hands on games. And since both Xbox360 and Playstation 2 will have DRM that everybody hates, and that Xbox360 supposedly is extremly difficult to "mod" with chips. Maybe there is a place for Nintendo once again.
  7. I always create a new HTML file with then put a "<a href="http://www.example.com/animations/flash.swf">Download</a>" in it. Then load it up in the browser, then just click on the link.
  8. I dont like girls. ALL GIRLS ARE EVIL.

    9/11

Yeh, it was a terrible day. The sad thing is that since then, everything just got worse, with all the new silly "anti terrorist" laws.
  10. You just need to download it, install it, run it. You dont have to worry about OpenGL, it should work on most computers. Thanks for the correction, that it is 'astronomy'.
  11. I found a project on SF called Stellarium, and played around with it for a couple minutes and its really cool. Stellarium renders 3D photo-realistic skies in real time with OpenGL. It displays stars, constellations, planets, nebulas and others things like ground, landscape, atmophere, etc. http://stellarium.sourceforge.net/ It is pretty neat...
  12. Well, try Gmail and you will see why it is so great. * 2,5+ gb space. * No-popups. * No graphical advertisement. * After read mail, no need delete, just put in archive folder. * Powerful search function to search for your emails. * Mark important messages with "star" to find them easily. * Filter incoming email to appear in labels. * Access keys. * POP3 support. * XML / Atom feeds. Etc, it's the best email provider there is.
  13. I still use Winamp 2.81 from 2002. Winamp used to be a great product when developed by Nullsoft. But ever since AOL bought bought Nullsoft, Winamp have started to suck. Now in the crew who develops Winamp, there is no member from the orginal Nullsoft crew. Justin "1014" Frankel, the genious who was the main guy behind Winamp resigned from AOL because he disliked the company and is now working on other projects. Justin's homepage is www.1014.org and his new company is www.cockos.com

    Programming

I have programmed in Visual Basic 6 some years ago, 5 too if I dont remember wrong. The good thing is that its easy and it doesnt take much time to create things. But the bad thing is that people who want to run your applications will need the vb runtimes (vbrun) dlls. Also you are locked to the Windows platform. And you need to have Microsoft Visual Basic which costs money.
  15. Nag your silly hosting provider to update the MySQL.
  16. Can someone give links and explain what type of software they are and why they are so great?

    cd rom drive

I agree alot with CaPMan, excellent advice. If you consider buy a new one, maybe you should look into one with write capability, I heard they're pretty cheap nowadays...

    WMP9

Both 9 and 10 are glitchy and slow.
  19. Google for it, maybe you find something. I dont know what it is, but if you want, I can try come up with some bogus information about it such as "wbdbr32i.dll" must stand for "WeB DataBase Release 32 (International).dll) (dynamic link library), and assume its a spyware and very bad.

    Sandboxie

Sounds pretty cool, I have heard alot about sandboxes on Unix-like systems but never on Windows. I am also curious to how it does work...
  21. I havent done this alot, but I think I did it once before in VobSub, it was very easy and worked really great. http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli Maybe it is the avi splitter, I dont remember...
