  1. The reason I suggested trying out, as a test, a new user profile is that sometimes a certain setting in a users account profile can become corrupted and lead to strange happenings.

You do not have to set up a Microsoft Account to do this. Just go Settings..Accounts.. Add another user, and follow the prompts (I do not have this persons sign in details etc)

Anyway it's a strange one this as it has never been mentioned as an issue before.

Does it also happen if you select a picture for example as your screensaver ?

  2.  Did you do an upgrade from a previous Operating System ?

    What screensaver do you use?

If you make another user (just as a test) make it admin , do your screensaver settings etc, and then after testing they work a couple of times, run ccleaner and see if the same thing happens. You can then boot into your normal admin user and delete the test one you made in accounts.

    Have you tried this?

  3. You didn't mention if you ran CCleaner, you just said you installed it.

If you ran CCleaner, did you tick all the options?

Did you use the registry cleaner?

Did you have any issues with your laptop before ?

What Operating system and security software do you have on the laptop?

  4. @logon.

Can I ask ask a couple of questions just out of curiosity?

When task manager shows CCleaner as still running does it close straight away if you highlight it and select 'close task' from the bottom of the page?

During the 8 seconds when you have taskmanager open, if you click on the Details tab at the top do you see anything running there that you don't expect to see? (perhaps a screenshot of the page would help you look through with 8 seconds being your allotted time)

For troubleshooting the handle keeping the process open you might consider doing this (you'd have to be quick though with it involving 8 seconds :))
