  1. It usually works fine for me. There was a time, though, when a problem with Firefox caused duplicate cache folders to be generated, and these were not being cleaned out.. Even though I was clearing the cache after every browsing session, I found I had 4 cache folders, when there should never be more than one. You should take a look in your Firefox Profile, see if you have extra history.dat files. If you don't know how to find the Profile folder, read this article: Profile Folder - MozillaZine Knowledge Base http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder
  2. Anytime you apply custom settings in any program, you'd better be absolutely sure you know what you're doing. Rely on the documentation, not on what somebody told you. It wouldn't hurt, though, if the Beginner's Guide were a little more emphatic about explaining that cleaning custom folders means cleaning out everything in them.
  3. 1.0.6 is just a security and stability upgrade of 1.0, 1.5 (now being tested as Deerpark) is a major revision of the browser, including significant changes in how graphics are handled. I don't know if this will involve changing the caching system, though. Since the release of 1.5 is scheduled to take place in a couple months, any revision to CCleaner intended to change the way it interacts with Firefox should be designed for that version.
  4. Has anyone tested to see if this is still an issue with the new version of Firefox, currently available as the Deerpark alpha?
  5. HDCleaner, at least, allows you to wipe free space on one or more selected partitions, you don't necessarily have to do the entire HD. Still a lengthy process, I'm sure.
  6. I use both NTREGOPT and PageDefrag, as they do different jobs. In the documentation for NTREGOPT, it even says specifically that it doesn't physically defrag the registry, like Sysinternal's PageDefrag, it compacts the registry. To achieve the maximum benefit, I think you need to do both. PageDefrag is worth having for the other files it defragments, in any case.
  7. It's not a separate AVG firewall, it's the antivirus plus a firewall. It's also 50 bucks for a 2 year license, which means I won't be trying it.
  8. Have you created a Firefox profile in a non-default location?
  9. It seems to be generally agreed that the online help is not very good, for one thing. Read the reviews at Download.com, they're extremely mixed. One loves it, another says "Ewido is worse than a virus", says it broke most of his links and disabled all his other security programs. Lots of complaints about slowness, one user said it kept just quitting, and had problems updating. Of course, you can't tell how many of the problems are user error, but even the editor's review only gave it 3 out of 5 stars. Another site, don't recall which one, while praising it's advanced features, described it as very promising. That sounds to me like the description of a work in progress, not a finished product. I'm glad to hear you use it without problems, I agree that it does sound promising. I wasn't aware that the scanner was free, that's good to hear. For now I'm gonna stick with what I've got, though, already got more security than I need.
  10. From the research I've done, it sounds like Ewido still has some bugs to be worked out. In any case it's not free.
  11. Actually, it's not even beta, it's an alpha version. They renamed it Deerpark to try to make it very clear that this is not a Firefox release. It's a long way from being ready for general release, which is why the Mozilla.org page linked above repeatedly says it's for testing purposes only. Many advanced users do seem to be using it without much trouble, though.
  12. I disagree. I see the primary use of CCleaner as removing the Windows garbage that bogs down your computer. Covering your tracks is another matter, and while it might be worth adding (if it doesn't make the program too unwieldy), CCleaner is not going to fade away without it. It's not as if this function isn't readily available from other free programs. I already have two apps with this capability, Spybot S&D and HDCleaner. I have never used the secure file deletion function of either.
  13. I note they also ripped off the names of a couple of Firefox extensions.
  14. I would like to see A-squared included in some tests. It never seems to be included, I suppose because it doesn't fall neatly into the category of AV or antispyware, since it's both, and more. I installed the free version after hearing about it on this forum, but I have yet to see any test that demonstrates how well it works. While I respect the opinions of the users here who recommended it, it would be nice to have something more than anecdotal evidence for its effectiveness. I can't tell, I use Firefox, and rarely get any malware.
  15. With this neat little extension, users of web-based e-mail can click on mailto links and have them open their e-mail Compose page, instead of MS Outlook. It eliminates the time-consuming hassle of copying the e-mail address, opening your e-mail Compose page and pasting it in. Instead, one click and you're ready to start typing. Alternate e-mail sites can be enabled in the right-click context menu. It's a slick solution to a major annoyance, I love it. WebmailCompose https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=206

    Registry

Since cleaning the MUI Cache was added, a couple updates ago, CCleaner is now a complete registry cleaner. I still use EasyCleaner as a backup, but it no longer finds very much.
  17. Post #32 in this thread explains how the problem occurs: http://forum.CCleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=850&st=0
  18. I regularly browse the Mozillazine Firefox Support forum, and I can tell you that disappearing bookmarks is a frequent problem. It can occur apparently at random. This was undoubtedly a coincidence, that one user happened to lose bookmarks after running CCleaner. Informed Firefox users back up their bookmarks regularly, either manually or with the aid of an extension. I recommend the Bookmark Backup extension, it backs up bookmarks and other browsing data automatically every time the browser is closed: http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=13
  19. I suggest you read the Beginner's Guide, the second topic in this forum. It explains what is deleted when various settings are enabled. I can assure you, though, that if you run CCleaner with the default settings, you won't notice any difference except that your PC will run a lot faster.
  20. Actually, NTREGOPT gives the results as percentage of reduction in the size of the registry, not in MB. I think using ERUNT to back up the registry first is what was intended when NTREGOPT and ERUNT were bundled together. That's how I got them, anyway, via MajorGeeks. On the author's site, he has them as separate downloads from the same page. You can get just one of them, but the implication is clear that they go together.
  21. Until the features you want become available in CCleaner, you could use EasyCleaner instead of Cleanup!. It is quite customizable (but less convenient than CCleaner to use) : http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/...ne.htm#download I recommend you don't use its Duplicates scan, that's very risky.
  22. AVG 7 Free, though I also have A-squared Free as a backup scanner (the free version is only the scanner, I don't try to run two resident AVs!). I do this even though as a Firefox user I rarely get viruses. I guess I'm just paranoid.
  23. If you want to view what's in the file, right-click on it and click Edit.
  24. If you already made a complete backup of the registry, making a backup of CCleaner's registry deletions would be overkill, I agree.
  25. It wouldn't hurt; if you're comfortable with editing the registry, and want to go to the trouble, go ahead. Even when I had to fix a bad install of Fx 1.0.3, I didn't mess with that, you can read about that here: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.ph...6488&highlight= I uninstalled, deleted the installation folder, ran CCleaner (both scans) and EasyCleaner (registry scan), and re-installed. I had no more trouble after that. If your previous version wasn't corrupted, I wouldn't even bother with that. I just installed 1.0.6, I did back up profiles, and uninstall the previous version (1.0.4, I skipped 1.0.5), but that's all I did before I installed. It went without a hitch, seems to be working flawlessly. But I'm no expert, if I was I might be less reluctant to edit the registry! Take as many precautions as you feel inclined, you're the one who has to deal with the results!
