  1. Well, I tried it 3 more times, and I was not able to reproduce the problem with the modem. The problem of missing graphics was consistently reproduced, however. It didn't just affect the site I was connected to when I ran CCleaner (this one) either. Running it again after disconnecting did correct the problem. Cleaning again while still connected didn't help. So it seems my inability to dial up after my first test was a fluke, or a coincidence. I've been told by a couple of users that they run CCleaner while online, with no problems. So it doesn't affect all systems, is easily reversable, basically not much of a problem. Of course, I didn't try running the "Issues" scan while online, I'll leave that to somebody braver (or stupider) than me.
  2. If experimental results can't be reproduced, they're meaningless, so I guess I'll have to try it again - as soon as I can work up the nerve. I'll post the results afterward, so stay tuned.
  3. I know it sounds absurd, but it's what happened. I tried to reconnect 3 or 4 times, kept getting the same error message, one I'd never seen before. I wish I'd written it down, but I was in a bit of a panic. I was prepared for Firefox to get messed up, had backed up profile and saved a copy of the setup file so I could reinstall the browser easily. I was totally dumbfounded when this happened.
  4. I tested this myself. Not only did I have missing graphics, my modem couldn't dial up afterward. I had to do a system restore.
