  1. Since Google search is on the Firefox toolbar already, and I know how to spell, I'll pass.

    .RAR

If you don't need all the features in Tugzip, here's a small, simple utility for extracting a number of different file types including .rar : http://www.extractnow.com/
  3. If you really had AOL installed, it may leave a lot of garbage behind. Used an AOL free trial as a temporary expedient one time, it left all kinds of bits scattered around. I eventually did a search for anything with AOL in the file name, apparently got ot all. Norton, however, wasn't that easy...
  4. There's quite a bit of improvement, actually. It's noticeably faster than the 1.0.x versions. A new update system can install patches, there's no more need to do a complete re-install every time there's a minor update. Updates can even be installed automatically, if you want. It has a built-in bookmark backup that keeps a copy of the bookmarks file from each of the past five days. There's a new "Clear Private Data" option that can be run automatically, from a keyboard shortcut, or from the Tools menu. The way extensions and themes are installed has been simplified. You can now make backups of the extension folder, or your entire profile, re-install them, or transfer them to another computer, and the extensions and themes will work, without the editing of the chrome.rdf file that was necessary before. The memory leak problem has been improved. The old "profile in use" dialogue has been changed, so it should no longer fool users into creating a new, blank profile. Now it prompts users to shut down the Firefox process that's running in the background, like it should have done to begin with. Popup blocking is supposed to be improved, though I can't tell, I didn't get that many popups before. I think those are the highlights, though I may have overlooked some. <edit> Eldmannen's post appeared while I was composing mine, that explains the duplications. Drag-and-drop for tabs, that's what I forgot! Probably because I never use it. (I've been running 1.5 since beta 1).
  5. That should be "is supposed to be released today". These things don't always go off as planned. The schedule is for sometime after noon, PST, which I believe is 8:00 PM, GMT.
  6. Hanging shutdowns are often due to extension problems. I suggest trying Mozillazine's Standard diagnostic (Firefox): http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_%28Firefox%29
  7. Are you sure that Firefox is shutting down completely? A "hanging shutdown" with some processes still running in the background, is a fairly common Firefox problem. Open the Task Manager -> Processes tab, and end any firefox.exe processes that are still running after you shut down Firefox.
  8. You should close Firefox while running CCleaner, especially if you're cleaning the Firefox cache. Firefox doesn't have a cookie folder, cookies are stored in a .txt file in the profile folder. See this page: http://the-edmeister.home.comcast.net/advi...ile_folder.html
  9. You got it figured out pretty well. I actually meant having CCleaner make backups of the entries it deletes. I don't actually back up everything anymore, but if something comes up that I'm not totally sure about, I back it up. These are just extra backups, I have the entire registry backed up daily by ERUNT. I'm on XP myself, so I know what you mean. If you uninstall a couple programs, there'll be a whole bunch of those.
  10. For anybody who sees this and thinks that's too much trouble to go to, you can easily clear those logs manually. Open Spybot S & D, at the bottom of the left hand column click Info & License -> Statistics to view the log, click Reset Statistics at the top of the page to clear it.
  11. Since I was sure this had been discussed before, too, I did a little search. I found a thread with a good explanation of this, and it turned out that it was one I had posted in. No wonder I was so sure! Anyway, read this: CCleaner Forums -> Missing Shared DLLs http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=1050&hl=
  12. The one I use is CDBurnerXP Beta: http://www.majorgeeks.com/CDBurnerXP_d4242.html
  13. I've been quite happy with Free Download Manager, it is spyware and adware free. Though its user interface takes a little figuring out, it's really easy to use once you get the hang of it. It will automatically send downloads to a pre-selected folder, but the option to change the location is easily available. It has an option to have your AV program scan all downloads automatically, so you don't have to worry about finding them to scan them. <Edit> Added download link: http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/
  14. I agree, nice job. A definite improvement over the old version.
  15. 7-Zip errors are fairly common with downloads from Mozilla, it's what they use to compress the files. If you get a corrupted download, a 7-Zip error message comes up when you try to extract the files.
  16. Sounds good, I can hardly wait til the additional features are ready!
  17. If you had just closed Firefox, it might not have finished closing yet. I've experienced this myself, it doesn't happen if I wait about ten seconds for the browser to "wind down" before running CCleaner.
  18. You're welcome. You could just ignore it, too. I had 5 of those "change" entries for a long time before I bothered to do anything about them. It's not like they do anything... I don't want to disparage Tarun's advice, he knows a lot more about computer security than I do.He's just not a fan of AVG, and maybe a little quick to assume there's a problem with it. I'm sure he's correct that eTrust is a better AV, and it's got a 1 year free trial, which is not a bad deal.
  19. This doesn't mean there's a problem, it means the file was updated or an error on the disk corrected. This thread on the AVG forum explains it, and what to do about it: http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php...4,backpage=,sv= The only thing you have to worry about is files that are shown as infected.
  20. There's also a problem with the Firefox extension Adblock. To fix it, switch to Adblock+, or there's an unofficial fixed version of Adblock you can find on the Adblock Forum.
  21. I've always installed over the top of the previous version, never had any problems.
  22. Looks good, easier on the eyes than the current version. Plenty of worthwhile updates, I think this should silence the naysayers.
  23. That's been discussed many times, it's up to MrG if he wants to do that or not. You're wrong about there being no program that does this now, however. EasyCleaner has this function: http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/...ne.htm#download Not as convenient as CCleaner, but I use it occasionally to supplement CCleaner (which I use daily). Do not run its "Duplicates" scan, though, it's dangerous!

PC INSPECTOR insists that you save recovered files to a different drive. You could save to another partition, if you have one, or to a CD or floppy, or a USB Flash drive, I believe. Did you read the program's help files? Click the question mark on the program's welcome page to access them.

A file recovery program would have a good chance of getting back your files if used soon, before they get overwritten. This one is supposed to be pretty good, and it's free: PC INSPECTOR File Recovery http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm
