  1. Don't use CCleaner while Firefox is open [or disable CCleaner's Firefox cache cleaning]. Firefox: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cache > Clear.
  2. Ha-ha, you didn't read the whole post! He can't get into Windows anymore. Since it powers off almost instantly after power-on, the problem can't be memory [unless a stick physically burned, which is probably not the case here]. It's probably either the power supply, or something in the CPU area (CPU fan died, thermal paste is weak/core shorting on the heatsink, etc etc). Have a tech check the CPU area first. The fan is either no longer spinning and your core burned out [which means getting a replacement CPU], or it needs to be re-thermal-pasted, or the heatsink is not making contact with the CPU, etc... if all seems well there, then try a known-good power supply.
  3. Memory detection via Win32 api is sketchy [and therefore approximated], because it does not include shadowed/shared RAM. I was told that CCleaner rounds to the nearest power of 2. (1.99 gets rounded to 2048, 2.0 GB)

  7. I think: Your monitor lost its settings when its AC power was interrupted. Try this and see if I'm right -- setup your monitor's geometry a certain way, shut down the PC, then remove AC power to the monitor for 5 minutes and then restore it, and turn everything back on.
  8. Yep. You don't know how to speak POP3. But I do! Though this is not really advisable, because if you can telnet into it successfully, you can use a client on it. You cannot really backspace or you'll get errors (most telnet clients send ^H when you backspace, but POP3 dictates ^H is a character, not a command) Here is what a transcript should look like [what you will type is in bold] : +OK POP3 <snip> <snip> server ready USER djlizard +OK User name accepted, password please PASS ******* +OK Mailbox open, 33 messages (all spam) LIST 1 2458 2 1739 3 8233 4 7773 5 1135 6 19369 7 5593 8 5118 9 18455 10 4055 11 18464 12 5852 13 4661 14 1543 15 13535 <that's ID # and then size, in bytes> . That should basically sum up how to speak POP3.
  9. That's what we're here for - to help you. But we're not going to pull teeth. *You* tell *us* what's wrong. This is like wasting time by asking "Can I ask a question?" when clearly that was a question itself. I suggest you start a new thread about your concern. In the new thread, give us more information. Tell us first that you're not renaming the download to 'CCleaner.exe', because this will not allow you to install CCleaner. You may want to browse and search the forums a little longer to make sure that your problem has not already been addressed (like the renaming to CCleaner.exe that's been asked a thousand times)
  10. I don't understand what is going on, so I think you need to seek a technician.

  15. Gotcha. I knew it had to be either one of them. Was more certain it was 98, but not surprised that it's ME. That's pretty crazy that you want to do that. Windows Me barely takes advantage of 512 MB, let alone 1GB+. At any rate, you either need to upgrade to Windows XP, or don't put in more than a gig of memory. Try this: Start, Run, SYSTEM.INI find the [386enh] section add this line under [386enh] : MaxPhysPage=40000 This limits the amount of physical RAM that Windows can access to 1 GB (4096[decimal] X MaxPhysPage[hex] = memory available to Windows) Windows Me can't access any more than 1024 MB. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/181862/EN-US/ for notes on MaxPhysPage. Sorry, but you're going to have to use this to actually *limit* the amount of memory that gets used [even though you want more]. But don't worry, you're really just wasting your time anyway because you'll never make Windows Me *use* that much RAM
  16. Are you running Windows 98?
  17. I'll tell you what it does. It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.
  18. If it's peeling off, then it's probably that your hard drive is always cranking. You need to find out why this is. See if task manager (control+shift+esc) shows anything as always running at 99/100% CPU usage. Maybe you have a service running that is being bad (like stupid cisvc) or some malware... or maybe you're running XP on a system that is more suited towards Windows 98/Me... lots of things. Post a Belarc Advisor log or something.
  19. Yes, you should go and find the files manually and delete them as well. HJT only removes the registry entries that "point" at the files.
