  1. You have a corrupted Recycle Bin, most people get one at some time - it's fairly common and easy to fix.
What happens is that Windows throws a wobbly and is remembering/reporting files that have already been cleared as being in the the bin even though they are not there anymore .

It's a long standing bug in Windows and has been happening for years. There are various things that can cause it to start.
Many people have a corrupted bin but don't even notice because (most of the time) it looks like it's acting as it should, it's only when you look deeper that you can see there's something not right.

And as I say it's easy to fix it; See here for how to do that:

.... this time it ran normal.  It did not say that FireFox need to close.

Like I said above I think the cause is an occasional glitch in the last 2 Firefox versions, not in CCleaner.

From what I've been seeing here, with the last Firefox version and with this one, then sometimes but not always Firefox is not closing like it should do and is leaving some files open.
If/when it does that then CCleaner will say that Firefox is still running, because some part of Firefox hasn't been closed properly.
(You may also occasionally see the 'Firefox is already open' message when you try to launch Firefox, I've been getting that occasionally with the last 2 Firefox versions).

If a Firefox bug is the cause then it's for Mozilla to fix it.

CCleaner does not provide email support

Yes they do, and they are usually pretty quick to help you sort out any problems:

    Send your email to support@ccleaner.com
(Laurence CCleaner also gave it in his post above).

It's best if you can use the same email address that you used when purchasing/registering CCleaner.
(or at least let them know what it was so that they can easily find your registration).

  4. @SteveTK As I was getting to above if your internet wasn't connecting for some reason then both Speed and Security would be greyed out.

If only one of them is greyed that would indicate an issue connecting to one particular server.

If it's only just happened, and it wasn't greyed out for your before, then it's probably something at the server end.
Maybe a connection glitch, maybe a server glitch, maybe just server maintenance.
In either case it should connect if you try again later when the server is back online. (Which may be why the original poster didn't come back, his problem disappeared on it's own when the server came back online?)

However if it remains greyed out for a day or two then that's probably your antivirus/firewall settings blocking the connection.

If that's the case and you need to come back to use then please let us know your CCleaner version, your Windows version and build, and what Antivirus you are using and if it's not Windows Defender then the AV version.

TBH in my opinion the Speed function doesn't really need running everytime that you run Health Check, but that's the way Health Check currently works.
The Speed function clears/prevents unecessary apps from starting with your computer and thus slowing it down by running in the background, once cleared from the startup list these are unlikely to come back into it again.
(Health Checks' Speed is the equivalent of Tools>Startup from the CCleaner menu, but in Health Check it is run automatically with it's own rules of what to remove from that list).
The possible case for running Speed everytime with Health Check is if a newly installed/updated app, or Windows Update, has put something new in the startup list

  5. There are various reasons why files come back after cleaning.

With 'Trackers' (actually cookies and other browser files, history, etc.) syncing the browser can often be the cause, as can 'live tiles' on the start menu, and anything else that runs in the background.

See here for more about 'Trackers', why some files come back after cleaning, and what you can do to stop some (not all) of it:

  6. So do I,
but I believe that this new functionality is still running in the background even if it may not be meant to. It's ticked by default, even though greyed out.
(I think that may be a bug, I don't think it should be ticked if you didn't already have 'Automatically install' set).
This is what I saw following the update to v94.0.1
    image.png

What I have just done now is:
Select 'Automatically Install updates', untick the new setting for 'When Firefox is not running', reselect 'Check for updates ...'.
So the new function should now be definitely turned off:
    image.png
I'll watch to see if that changes the behaviour, but as it's only occasional here it will take time to evaluate.

Having read more about how this new updating is supposed to work I personally suspect that it is launching the background task on a schedule, (even if you have told it to notify only it's still checking if there is something to notify- as long as that box is ticked), but in some instances it's not closing again or at least not closing as quickly as it should.

Of course I could be wrong, but when an app/browser suddenly starts behaving differently I look for what has recently changed in that app/browser that might explain the different behaviour.

  7. As I say I think it's probably something to do with a new "background agent" in Firefox that wants to deliver version updates when Firefox is closed. (Why they want to do that is another question).

    Quote

On Windows, there will now be fewer interruptions because Firefox won’t prompt you for updates. Instead, a background agent will download and install updates even if Firefox is closed.

  8. Which Firefox version and which Windows version please?

I have noticed that Firefox has occasionally been behaving oddly for a couple of weeks now.

It seems to be not fully closing and leaving something running even though it's not showing in Task Manager.

Opening and closing Firefox again usually sorts it out - till next time.

I first noticed it with cookies.

I have Firefox set to clear them on closing, and then part of my own cleaning routine does it again to make sure.

But occasionally for the last few weeks CCleaner will still find Firefox cookies to clean despite those two already supposed to have cleared them. Obviously something is still open (at least for a while) and preventing them being cleared.

I've also a few times recently had Firefox say that it's already running when I've tried to open it after turning on the computer.

Personally I believe that it may be a bug related to the way they have changed Firefox version updating to happen even when Firefox is closed. I've not looked any deeper yet.

  9. @Andavarinah, the SSD was/is brand new - it seems to be certain Windows versions that has issues with it.

21H1 wouldn't format it, but 1909 formated it quite happily and then 21H1 can use it with no problems.
Probably similar to what happened with yours that went funny "after doing a major Win 10 upgrade", it's Windows that changed not the drive.
I actually got an identical replacement SSD sent out from the supplier - same formatting issue with 21H1, fine with 1909.

Of course using it to make a clone means reformatting as part of the process, and it's not 1909 that I wanted to clone but 21H1 so that was a bit of a problem.
TBH I should have made a mirror backup while I had both drives and done it that way instead.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it would format fine with the 32-bit Windows 21H1 on my Toshiba laptop, but that is a brand new install so I don't want/need to clone that either.
I have to admit that I've not tried playing with it again for a while, the house move got in the way.
For now I'm just using that SSD for external storage and any Windows version is quite happy with it.

  10. Thanks Hazelnut,

Reflect v8 now installed, when I've got time I'll see if it can sucessfully clone this laptop to that problematic SSD that I've got lying about.
(I've not given up on that SSD yet, just no urgency. I may even try it in the 32-bit Toshiba first; that one could really do with a speed boost).

  11. You say "manually deleting"; is there any particular reason why you didn't use CCleaner to delete them?
(Or do you mean that you right-clicked and selected 'Delete Now'?)

Do you have your browser synced?
See this for why syncing, and other things, will bring cookies and files back after cleaning:

Is the browser fully closed, ie. nothing still running in the background?
    Try:
Open Chrome > click Menu > Settings
        Click Advanced > System
Move the "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed" switch to the left, to the "Off" position

  12. I'm no expert on using Recovery software, but do know that:

If/when a recovered files is reading as containing all zeros then that usually shows that the contents have been overwritten. (or damaged).

If it is recoverable but contains all zeros then that is probably because it's been deleted by a secure delete function, or the space where it had been saved has later been wiped by a 'wipe free space' type routine.
The whole point of those measures is to make the contents of deleted files unrecoverable.

In which case the secure delete and/or free space wipe has done it's job correctly and there is nothing left inside the file to be recovered.

  13. Although not sure what happened to 'hide' the passwords for you, searching the threads here on the forum I can't find any other reports of CCleaner affecting Bitwarden.

So either it's something new happening and you are first to report it, or it wasn't CCleaner that did it?

I'm not familiar with bitwarden, but from a quick look online it seem that this can happen occasionally and the solution is simply to resync your Bitwarden account, or close and reopen it:

  14. Could you please give more details of what is happening?

Are you using Health Check or Custom Clean?

Have you used the Registry Cleaner or any other tools?

"Woke up this morning". Is your computer left running and logged overnight? Is Smart Cleaning enabled or not?

And  of course the CCleaner version and Windows version will help.

  15. As long as you are still using the same email address as when you purchased then you can have your licence details quickly resent to you by email.

Simply use the form here: https://www.ccleaner.com/support/license-lookup

If you are no longer using the same email address then you can contact support by email on support@ccleaner.com
You will need to tell them the email address that you used when purchasing so that they can look up the details.

Once you have the key again you may also find this of use:

Thanks. I used this button and got 2 replies on my Inbox.

As the online request form works, but not when you send a request by email, then it does suggest that there may be an issue with your email account and sending emails.
Have you noticed any other problems with sending emails to other people or companies?

I believe that you are using an Hotmail address?

Hotmail itself can block outgoing emails in some circumstances, all outgoing emails or just certain ones.
It can do it for various reasons. (Limits on numbers sent in a certain time period, attachments too big, content of the email, and so on).
See this for some ideas of what to check: https://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/hotmail-problem

Hotmail actually stopped service years ago, and you are in fact using Outlook even though your address is still '@hotmail.**'.
You may want to consider changing your email address / service to a more modern one, possibly Outlook, possibly Gmail, there are many options.
(I know it can be daunting to make the change and have to inform all your contacts).

You can even register your own domain name and have you own email address like 'myfirstname@mylastname.com'  it's fairly easy to do and cheap or even free.
You don't need to create a website if you don't want to, just use the email facility.
See this for how to do it, it shows a choice of domain hosting companies:
    https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-get-a-free-email-domain-quick-and-easy-methods/

(Personally I have my own domain and so personal email address hosted on IONOS which isn't listed in that article. it was free for the first year and now costs me just £12 GBP, about 14 Euro, a year).

.... moving the mass of existing users, many of whom may have multiple accounts, to Two-Step verification may be more of a struggle.

I personally know people who have hundreds if not thousands of Google accounts, usually because they had been creating new ones almost daily to log into Google.

(Makes it fun when they lock themselves out of their device and ask if you can get into it for them - does anybody know the Google account password they used when registering a new Android device? I certainly don't remember any, although I probably made a note somewhere if I can find it again).

As these multiple accounts would likely be connected to a particular device you would think Google could find a way to merge them?
Of course doing that would lose them millions of account holders and a big slice of market share, if only statistically.

  18. I wouldn't be too worried. (As long as you have got Speccy from the official source).

1 (or a couple) of detection by a minor company(ies) as opposed to 67 'cleans' from the others, including the big boys, is not unusual on VT.
From a quick look online it appears that SecureAge Apex is known for being quite prone to giving FP's.

You will see similar results with the odd false positive for most things that you check on VT.

    EDIT.
Interestingly I've just checked and it's only speccy64.exe that Apex FP's on VT (although it doesn't show the '64') -  if you upload speccy.exe Apex passes it as clean.

I am just using the default settings set by CCleaner during the installation process. I am not cleaning the registry.

Just to be sure here - you are only using Custom Clean?

The default screen set during installation is Health Check and not Custom Clean.

Health Check uses it's own rules which you can't change, changing any settings for Custom Clean will not change what Health Check does.

If you want Custom Clean as the default then go to Options > Settings and change 'CCleaner home screen' to Custom Clean.

For cleaning of Office documents look at the Custom Clean Applications tab and in the 'Applications' section make sure that you have your version of Office unticked (or all Office versions unticked) so that it is left alone by Custom Clean.
(Health Check will still clean it if you run Health Check).

The printer issue may be something else, it may be Windows itself.
I haven't heard of CCleaner causing printer problems before, unless possibly if you've used the Reg Cleaner which is why Nergal asked.
It is now also possible that if you have used CCleaners  Driver Updater that it might have changed the printer driver, but you haven't mentioned using that.

It may not be CCleaner at all - Microsoft have been having numerous issues with updates breaking printer functionality for a year or two now.
Everytime there is a Windows Update some people find that their printers stop working.

Windows 11 is no exception to this and there are currently at least 3 known different ongoing printer problems with Win 11.
