I don't use Chrome, I use Firefox but the solution is the same. On the 'Applications' tab of Ccleaner uncheck the 'Saved Passwords' option.

I recall that this was noticed when this forum announced the change from http to https and asked us all to change our bookmarks if necessary. I reported at the time that even though my bookmark still said http, Firefox automatically changed this to https when I clicked the bookmark. I tried this with various other bookmarks and they all did the same. Others, including mta, confirmed that they were seeing the same with FFx when using bookmarks. Maybe the ones that are not changing automatically are not configured correctly? (or don't have a https version yet?). Or it could be that if you are following a link, or typing directly into the address bar, then FFx does not make the substitution?

It's their 'instant ink' thing. The cartridge tells the printer it's running out, and the printer phones home to order a new one. So even if you are not signed up to it they know your cartridge is empty.

Is the answer to make manufactures of IoT devices more responsible for the security of the 'things' that they put out there? They wouldn't get away with selling something that was electrically unsafe, there are laws in (almost) every country against that. So why should they be able to provide stuff that is internet unsafe? Looks like a case for adding internet safety into existing product safety legislation? Probably be a nightmare to legislate for and enforce though. PS Do you realy need your fridge to be able to 'talk' to your washing machine?

If you know that there are only a few fragmented files then- Analyse View files Select all Defrag selected Takes minutes to do. OK you have defragged the files not the full drive. so what, you won't notice any performance difference.

If you don't have backups of the files then depending on just what ransomware/malware has been used to encrypt the files then you may be able to get them back, with help. I suggest that you go to one of the specialist FREE malware removal sites, such as the MalwareByres forum, There are other malware removal sites as well; see item 10 here for a list: https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showannouncement=15&f=4 If you go to that Malwarebytes link the read the 4th post down " I'm infected - What do I do now?" to get you going. If/when you post tell them about the encrypted files. If you register at one of those they may be able to unencrypt the files for you, and more importantly they can give FREE one-to-one help with cleaning any and all malware from your computer. You will get one-to-one help from one of their malware removal experts who will ask you to run a couple of programmes to see what is infecting you PC, and then customise one or more removal programmes to get rid of just what it is you have been infected with. (You can look at some of the other threads there to see how it works, but don't use any of the removal programmes in them. They have been written for that specific user/problem).

My internet connection at home has gone down and so I am currently tethering through my mobile phone (or going to the pub to use their wi-fi). I'm new to tethering like this so wonder if anyone here has more experience. When tethering a laptop to a mobile phone is it better to use a USB cable, or to use the mobile as a wi-fi hotspot (or bluetooth it)? Or does it make no real difference? Both methods will obviously use the mobile contract data allowance, so no advantage there. I realise the hotspot (or Bluetooth) method would use more of the phones battery. I presume that using a cable would be very slightly faster, although probably not that noticable. But are there any other advantages or disadvantages between the methods?

You can tell Speccy to save a 'snapshot', or an xml, or a text file, or even just print a report off (from the file menu), but as far as I know it does not save one automatically. http://www.piriform.com/support/speccy#204044294 So I guess this is not what you are after here, unless you have already saved one previously it won't be on the drive. It's something to bear in mind for future use though, print one off and put it somewhere safe.

(Well maybe a bit dodgy if you don't need or use Assistive Technology, but they are not checking at the moment).

I don't think you can blame Microsoft for lightning strikes killing your PC, Thor maybe? You could try a surge protector or a UPS, but it's probably not going to protect against nearby strikes. Best advice is to shut down and unplug during thunderstorms, don't forget the ethernet cable. There again you may not even know that a distant storm is happening and still get a power spike. Without spending a fortune on industrial scale lightning protectors there is not a lot you can do other than claim on your houshold insurance if your PC gets fried..

Well this week Windows 10 has had the Anniversary Upgrade, and yesterday was patch Tuesday which also gave a Cumulative Update (KB3176495) and a Malicious Software Removal Tool update (KB890830). Both the Anniversary Upgrade and the Cumulative Update made changes to Edge. Even if you dont have the Anniversary Upgrade yet and are still on Win 10 1511 there were updates yesterday for patch Tuesday. Could be that Edge has moved the target again and it will take the devs time to work out what has changed and catch up? PS. I have the Anniversary Upgrade (version 1607) and Ccleaner works fine on my machine. Only problems that I have had is with StickyNotes, reported in another thread, and with slow browser tabs, but that may be Firefox 48 rather than Windows AU; I'm stil trying to track it down..

With the new app, which is part of the new Windows Ink, the minimum size that you can drag them to is just too big. 8 notes at the smallest they will go is the most you can get on the desktop without overlapping them. You may get more on a higher resolution, I've not checked. Not that I would want 8 up at once, but it gives you an indication of the minimum size. Even just one looks too big and ugly. Maybe they need to be this big to let you use a touchscreen stylus? There have already been multiple moans on the Microsoft forums about the new ones being too big. Oh well, time to either stop using them or get one of the 3rd party alternatives, there are plenty out there.

So as Windows sticky notes has now become a 'Trusted App', so that it works with 'Ink' and Concertina, it looks like we are stuck with the new version. No problem, from memory the exe goes in (see below) and the snt goes in (see below) but I am on my phone now, will post the two correct paths when I get home in an hour or 2. EDIT. Back home now. The .exe file goes in- C:\Windows\system32\stikynot.exe The .snt file goes in- C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes\StickyNotes.snt As said you will find both of them at the same paths in the windows.old after you have done the upgrade. (and just for info the .snt is the one that keeps all the contents, screen positions, and sizes of the notes) EDIT2 - WARNING Although doing the above restores your old sticky notes all is not well. Although you can type into the notes (and delete, etc.) there is no right click context menu for copy and paste? (ctrl+c, crl+v, etc. keys still work). You can click on the + to create new notes, BUT you can't click on the X to close them. Only way to close the notes is to stop the programme then delete (or edit) the .snt file. (Kind of defeats the object).

One thing I have found is that the 'Sticky Notes has changed from a programme to a Windows app which seems to be part of the new "Ink" thing. If you had any sticky notes on your desktop they will be gone after the upgrade. (Fair enough). The new app has a few more functions but not much, and I don't like the new font, or the size of notes themselves. You are limited as to how you can resize them. Being a native app there does not seem to be a file where the contents of the notes are saved. And you can't add it to start-up other than having a note open, or putting Ink in start-up. I found it easy enough to get the old programme back and running by copying the StikyNot.exe and the StickyNotes.snt files from the Windows.old folder back to the new installation. Which of course also restored the contents of my old sticky's. Not critical, just another little niggle.

Well I went for it using the 'Windows Update > Learn more > Get the Aniversary Update Now' route. Took over 4 hours to download and install. (The wi-fi I'm using tops out at 2.5Mbps, that's what you get for living rural). That did include a helpful "Something went Wrong" after 1-1/2 hours of downloading. Seems OK up to now, need to check what privacy settings it has changed, and otherwise have a good look round. All programmes, including speccy and CCleaner, are still there but some icons have changed. It's also put an AudioWizard icon on the desktop for some reason. I'll check that next. And it keeps bugging me to register for OneDrive. No thanks, I still don't trust cloud storage. EDIT I've had a look about and TBH I don't see much difference apart from a few cosmetic changes, and of course having to change back 'spy' settings that MS had reset in their favour. There again I don't use Edge, I don't have a touchscreen with stylus for the new "Ink" thing, I don't sync to my phone, and I don't play Xbox games. I didn't even turn Cortana off completely, just turned off it's privacy and learning settings so it just works as a searchbox. One oddity; Even though this is Windows 10 Home it says in Settings>Privacy>General "Some settings are managed by your organisation". Looking online all the sugestions I could find say you get rid of this message by changing the Group Policy using gpedit.msc - but this is the Home edition, it does not have any Group Policy (or gpedit.msc). The only thing you could call a group with the home edition is the Wifi network Workgroup. I do notice that one of the items there is greyed out, so its probably something to do with that. (Send MS info about how I write to help us improve writing and typing in future). I think it's to do with Cortana and/or Ink. Not a problem, just an oddity.

Are you sure that it's CC that is deleting your cookies? Check your browser settings for Delete Cookies / delete history on closing.

I've also been considering doing this. But I remember that some of those who did this with the 1511 update had problems, and had to roll back and wait until it was installed through WU. I've also seen reports that some who have used the MCT this time have had problems with Cortana not installing properly (or at all). Cheers for that, The Aniversary Upgrade has not installed itself here yet, but that was one of the issues I knew about and was looking for a hack to turn it off ASAP.

That will be because that article is for the Edge browser not Firefox, I included it because I wasn't sure which browser you were actually using. I'm still not sure here just what is happening - Is MSN loading into its own window on startup? Or is it loading into a Firefox tab when you open Firefox? If MSN is loading into its own window on startup then you need to turn it off, or remove/uninstall the app. See the link I gave above to the howtogeek article on how to uninstall it. Read the full article, you may not be able to uninstall it in the normal way, you may need to use powershell to uninstall the app. If however it is loading into a Firefox tab then lets see if we can work out why. In firefox go to settings - (the little cogwheel or click 'Options' in the Tools menu), and then select 'General'. Iit will show how you have set FFx to start and should have 3 options- Show my Homepage. Show a blank page. Show my Windows and tabs from last time. It will also show just what url (webpage) your homepage is set to load if 'Show my Homepage' has been selected. Unless you have MSN set as your homepage url; or have 'Show my windows and tabs from last time' set, then it is not Firefox that is loading MSN. Please try the above and report what FFx start settings you have. (I have to go out for a while, will be back later).

It's not clear just what you are asking here? Do you want to keep MSN news feeds or remove them? (or change the options?). Are you using FireFox or IE? (or both?). "constantly removing all IE entries on CCleaner." will have no effect on FireFox.
