  1. With v5.74:

    1. If you don't wan't to see a CCleaner icon in the System Tray then:
      Make sure that you don't have 'Minimise to System Tray' selected in Options>Advanced.
      You also need to turn off 'Smart Cleaning' (completely, untick everything there), and untick Options>Updates>'Keep CCleaner updated automatically'.
      Either one of those options will run a background task and so put an icon in the System Tray.
    2. CCleaner has never been able to clean files that are open. You have to close the files or skip cleaning them.

    I suspect that it's the new 'Keep CCleaner updated automatically' that is putting an icon in your Tray if you didn't have one before.

    I've checked back to CCleaner v5.62 (the earliest I still have, from October 2019) and that Explorer warning message was there back then.

    If you were not seeing the message previously then either:

    1. You didn't have 'Other Explorer MRUs' ticked, - or
    2. Explorer was already closed, - or
    3. You had at some stage ticked the 'Do not show me this message again' box and so if Explorer was open then 'Other Explorer MRUs' were being skipped without showing you the messge.
  2. So that rules out any connection problem; good to rule that out but doesn't help you.

    The next suspect with a new CCleaner version would be your Antivirus.
    We often see problems with some AVs when a new version of CCleaner is released. (Certain AVs more than others).
    Usually these clear themselves up as the AV definitions get updated, but it can sometimes take a few days (or even weeks with some).

    So the next step that I would take is to check that your AV is up to date.
    It's sometimes best to do that on their website, an AV can report that it is up to date when in fact it isn't.
    (We had that issue with Trend Micro a couple of months ago. TM2019 reported it was up to date, but as soon as users went to the website and updated for free to TM2020 that cured their issues).

    If updating the AV doesn't cure the slow loading of CCleaner then you could next try making CCleaner an exception in the AV.

     

    Just to note that I once had a CCleaner that was very slow to launch on my machine.
    A few others were also seeing it, but not the majority of users.
    Rolling back to earlier CCeaner versions didn't help.
    It turned out that it was something a Windows Update had done to my particular machine (and some other users) and nothing could cure it until the next Windows patch.

  3. This thread is from 2 years ago, things have changed.

    As well as the Active Monitoring above - In v5.74.#### if you don't want to see the icon in the system tray then you also have to turn off "Keep CCleaner updated automatically".
    PS. That doesn't use many resources by being left turned on and the icon sitting there, it just checks once every 12 hours if there is a new version.

  4. I've not noticed it particularly with v5.74.

    Just as a test you could try disconnecting from wifi/the internet and see if it then loads faster.

    Obviously that's not something you would do normally, but it may point up if it's some setting for your internet connection that is slowing it down.

    Also just to cover possibilities, which Windows version and what antivirus are you using ?

    Big Sur was expected to be called Mac OS X 10.16 (and beta versions were identified as such) but Apple decided at a late stage to call it Mac OS 11.0.1 instead, apparently catching a lot of people by surprise.

    But there may be more to it than that:
    It seems that it was such a late decision on Apples part that some internal labels in Big Sur itself still call it OS X 10.16, so CCleaner may be picking one of those labels up.

  6. Just to note that we have had 2 users who needed to do a restart of 20H2 (Windows 2004) before CCleaner 5.74 would install properly for them.

    I'm not sure why that should be, it's not something that is normally needed.

    If you haven't done a Windows restart (not a shutdown/reboot) for a while, and especially if you normally sleep/hibenate, then a Windows restart may be worth a try.

    PS. I'm begining to suspect that at least some of these CCleaner can't run or can't install issues for certain machines may have been caused by last weeks Windows Patch Tuesday updates.
     

  7. Good to hear that a Windows restart also  worked for you.

    It's not something that is normally needed to install or update CCleaner.

    I'm only guessing here but it may be related to 5.74 being pushed out as an 'Important Update', or it may be related to something in the latest 20H2 Patch Tuesday update on certain makes of machines or machines with certain chips.

    @Dave CCleaner You may want to have the devs take a look at this, and advise users having install/update problems to try a Windows restart.

  8. Both 32 bit and 64 bit executables should be installed.

    If the install has got that far then can you look in you CCleaner folder and see if both CCleaner.exe and CCleaner64.exe have the same 'Date modified'.

    I'm asking because we had a user last week whose CCleaner.exe had updated to 5.74, but his CCleaner64.exe was still showing the install date for 5.73.
    When he reboted the next day and looked again they were both showing the same date, correct for v5.74.

    Not sure why that was but it appeared that his machine needed a reboot/restart of Windows which finished installing the CCleaner64.exe.

    If your two files are showing different dates then it may be worth a try.

  9. As Dave has asked you should check that, I've had that happen myself following a Windows update.
    It's in Settings>Apps>Choose where to get apps.
    If the update has set it to 'The Windows Store only' then it usually (but not always) prevents downloading of anything at all that is not from the Windows store.

    If that isn't the problem then our next 'go to' trick is to try downloading the 'Slim' installer from here (it's the third one down) and once it's downloaded double click it to install CCleaner:

    It installs exactly the same version of CCleaner but the Slim installer can sometimes work when the Standard installer is being blocked for some reason.

  10. Which version of CCleaner are you trying to install?  I assume the latest v5.74.

    And which antivirus?

    We often see issues when a new version of CCleaner is released with certain AVs stopping them from installing.
    It can take a few days, or in some cases a week or so, before the Antivirus updates to recognise the new CCleaner version.

    Certain Antiviruses are more prone to this (slower to update) than the majority.

    Plus some antiviruses will say that they are up to date when in fact they are not.
    (For instance Trend Micro 2019 will say that it's up to date, but the latest is Trend Micro 2020 which you sometimes have to get manually from their website).
    You could try going to your AV makers website and check what the latest version is there.

    That should help the devs investigate what may have happened.

    I'm not sure what may have happened, the v5.74 update is a bit different to usual as it's classed as an 'Important Update' but nobody else is reporting this issue of losing their settings. (yet?).
    Mine updated without problems, but I do have an ini file, and I did update manually by downloading an installer from the builds page rather than updating through CCleaner itself so it's not the same as yourself.
    (If I get time I may go back a version, remove the ini, and update through CCleaner - just to see what happens).

    Isn't it always the case that the one time you don't check is when something goes wrong?

    That is a possible explanation, is it likely that you may have done that?

    PS.I know this isn't what happend to you, but just in case you didn't know:
    The other way that (some) things that are not checked will be cleaned is if you run Health Check.
    Health Check uses it's own cleaning rules which you can't change, and it takes no notice of what is ticked or unticked for Custom Clean.

    Did you uninstall your CCleaner before installing the new version?

    Doing that will lose your setings/changed preferences everytime, and the newly installed version will start again with the default settings.

    I'm always uninstalling/reinstalling different CCleaner versions when helping others on here so know that this will happen.

    As Megan says the way around that is to tick the box to tell CCleaner to save your settings to an INI file, once you have that box ticked it will save your current settings and then automatically save any further changes that you make to those settings.
    (If you untick the box again it will keep the current settings, but won't add any further changes).

     You must remember to save a copy of the INI file to a different location than the CCleaner folder. (and save a new copy each time you change any settings).
    That's because uninstalling CCleaner will remove the INI file from the CCleaner folder and so you have to put the copy back once you have reinstalled.

    (I actually do it slightly differently - I make a copy of the INI in the CCleaner folder itself and rename it as 'Backup of CCleaner.ini', that will survive the uninstall and can be copied/renamed back to 'CCleaner.ini' following the reinstall. But I do also keep another copy elsewhere just in case).
     

    If you didn't uninstall the older version then how did you get the update?
    Did it update itself (as an Important Update), was it offered in a pop-up when you launched CCleaner, did you click the 'Check for updates' button , or did you download a new installer (maybe from the 'builds' page) and install that yourself?

     

  13. Good to hear it's updated itself and is OK now.

    The dump files are an known issue and they are working on a fix.
    You can delete them without any problem, or just leave them there.

    They have promised that when the fix is released it will also automatically clean up any .dmp files that have been made.

  14. If 5.73 is still working on your 1809 LTSC then I'd stick with that, and turn off the automatic updating of 'Important Updates' to make sure that it doesn't update again as an 'Important Update'.

    You might try v5.75 when it comes out, but I suspect that you'll find v5.73 may be the last CCleaner version that will work on 1809 LTSC.
    (Similar to how v5.64 is the last version that will work on XP and Vista for those still using those OS's).

    If you are using LTSC for a general use computer then it's not really intended for that, and you may want to think about updating to regular Windows 10, home, pro, or enterprise.

    PS. I was thinking about it and I do know one machine that is running Win 10 LTSC; it's the cash register in my local pub.
    It only ever uses the manufacturers own cash register/accounting software, nothing else, so it doesn't need Windows updating to keep up with other software.
    It's like that Microsoft article says about being for a specific use, you wouldn't want to be doing constant Win10 updates on a cash register, and when it gets old you don't update the OS you get a new cash register.
    In normal use you never even see that it runs on Windows, it hibernates so that you turn it on and it's ready to start using.
    I only even know it's Win10 LTSC because I've helped reset in the past following a crash and it briefly flashes up the Windows splash screen when you reboot it.
    (It did lose half of that days records of sales in that crash, along with everyones open bar/table tabs which was fun).

  15. I don't know if this is anything to do with it but 1809 reached End-of-Life/end of support 5 days ago on 10th November.
    That shouldn't affect LTSC which has a 10 year support channel.

    However:
    LTSC is intended for devices that have one specific function and so don't need to be updated, because of this it may not support the latest versions of apps.
    LTSC is designed to be a stable platform for certain uses and is not updated to the latest specifications semi-anually.
    (If you need to update LTSC you install a whole new system, hardware as well as the OS/software).
    The issue with this is that LTSC may be unable to run the latest versions of apps, and has to stick with older versions.

    I do know that Microsoft's thinking on LTSC has changed since it was first implemented. - Because business who deployed it for other reasons have realised that is not what it was meant for and their systems are falling behind.

  16. "Run CCleaner when the computer starts" does not remain running in the background. - It cleans once at boot time and then closes.
    It does not remain running in the background, it does not leave an icon on the taskbar.
    It does this clean 'silently' so you do not see the CCleaner screen.
    You will see the CCleaner logo in the middle of the taskbar for a second or two, but it's only there for seconds and you may not even notice it.

    "Smart Cleaning" if turned on (enabled) does need to run in the background and puts the CCleaner logo in the System Tray part of the taskbar on the right.

    "Automatic Updates" if turned on in versions since v5.74, released earlier this week, also needs to run in the background and puts the CCleaner logo in the System Tray part of the taskbar.

    If either or both of those last two options is turned on then CCleaner will have a background task running and will have an icon in the system tray similar to this:

    If both are turned off then CCleaner won't running in the background, and the icon will not be there:

    When running the background task(s) will not be using many resources.
    Smart Cleaning just checks once in a while to see if junk is building up and/or if you have closed a browser.
    Automatic Updates checks twice a day (if your computer is turned on) to see if there is a new update available.

    There was a glitch in the early release of v5.74 (first few days) where the new "Automatic Updates" would also turn on "Smart Cleaning" -  so it could be difficult to turn both of them off.

    That glitch has quickly been fixed and if you downoad/reinstall CCleaner again you should now be able to turn both those options off.
    (If you already have a downloaded installer don't use it - download/install the new one).
    If you do have "Automatic Updates" turned on then CCleaner will do this itself to fix things. - That's why the Automatic Updates are now an option for all users, Free and Pro.

  17. I am looking at your screenshot of File Explorer and notice that the dates for CCleaner.exe and CCleaner64.exe are different.

    They should both have the same date.

    It looks as if your CCleaner64.exe has not been updated to 5.74. (23-10-2020 was the v5.73 release date).

    I don't know why that would have happened but it is probably what is causing problems.

    I would do the following -
    Make sure that you have a copy of your registered name and licence key.
    Uninstall CCleaner, and restart your computer.
    Download the Slim installer from here and double click on "ccsetup574_slim.exe" to install a new CCleaner:

    Once installed will need to enter your name and registration key to re-register as Pro.

  18. The 3 Microsoft browser are listed under the 'Windows' Tab in CCleaners Custom Clean.

    Other Browsers that you have installed are listed under the 'Applications' tab when you click on it.

    For example Firefox here:

    If the browsers are Chromium based then their cookies may be seen as Chrome cookies.

    You can tell Custom Clean (but not Health Check) if you want particular cookies to be left alone, or if you want all cookies to be left alone, see this article:

    But as I said above - it will keep popping up until either you update to 5.74, or until Piriform downgrade the update status from 'Important Update' to 'Product Update'.

    You will need to contact support to resolve licencing issues; it's not something that we can do on the open forum. (For security/privacy we can't see licence information here).
    You should email them at: support@ccleaner.com

    If possible send your request from the same email address that you used when registering CCleaner.
    (If that's not possible then noting that registered email address in your request, if you can, will make it easier for them to find your account).

    You should get an automatic acknowledgement by return email that your request has been received and is in a queue for action, if you can't see one then check your email spam folder.

  20. You seem to have 3 different issues there, let's address them one at once:

    All versions, (except the portable), will check for updates when you open CCleaner, unless you are not connected to the internet.

    It won't update automatically though unless you have the "Apply these updates automatically" options selected.

    As you can see in your screenshot there are two tick-buttons, one for Important Updates and one for the regular (monthly) Product Updates.

    As far as I remember this is the first one to be deemed an Important Update.

    For the Product Updates you can untick "Show me notifications for these updates" and you will not be shown that notification.

    HOWEVER - v5.74 has currently been deemed an Important Update, and whilst it still has that Important status you will be shown the notification for it; That's the point of having different levels of Update.
    If you don't install v5.74 you will continue to get that notification until the update is no longer flagged as Important.

    (There is also a third, seperate, method for Emergency Updates, that is for critical security measures only so there is no option to delay them. That was introduced 3 years ago and has not had to be used yet).

    The Application error that some users are seeing is under investigation. (But see below).

    The licence not being accepted issue may be one of a couple of things.
    What/which error message is being shown?

    There is a slight possibility that the licence key issue and the Application error may be connected. (We have had one other report of this from before v5.47).
    Can you sucessfully register the licence in older versions? or are you only being shown this licence error with v5.74?

    Note - v5.74 has a quick bugfix update and is now at v5.74.8198; you may want to try that new version if it wasn't the one you already installed.

  21. The automatic update to v5.74.8198 was a small bugfix rather than a full version release, so that is probably why the install date of 5.74.#### was not changed in Apps and Features.

    When 5.75.#### comes along that should get a new install date.

    As you note many applications work the same way, full version changes get a new date, smaller changes to a version don't get a new date.

    You can always check in File Explorer (C:\Program Files\CCleaner) to see what date the CCleaner.exe and CCleaner64.exe were updated on your machine.

    It's another small bug that is due to be fixed. It isn't affecting the running of CCleaner just the UAC skipping.

    If it's bugging you then you can easily cure it for yourself by following the 4 simple steps quoted in this post. (You may have to do this after each CCleaner update until the permanent fix is rolled out).
