  1. updates for AVG 7.5 are to cease from May 31, 2008. Some people are getting the following nag screen (that is now loading after AVG 7.5 free runs): http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm5/LarkB_album/AVG.jpg (link is perfectly safe to click on, is a picture of the new nag screen) I haven't got that one yet, just a nag screen to update with no date mentioned.
  2. my readings at the moment: The maximum advertised speed I can get on my ADSL broadband package is 8MB download speed and that is only possible where all conditions are perfect - the person lives close to (within half a mile of) the local telephone exchange and the broadband connection is at the main junction box in the house plus all cabling etc is perfect. I happen to live within half a mile of the exchange but I use an extension cable which degrades the download speed - the main junction box for the house is upstairs and I have an extension running downstairs to a secondary junction box (extension point for telephone etc) and then have a lengthy cable running from that box to my computer (ethernet connection). I reckon if I used my computer upstairs I'd probably get an extra MB or so of speed. The length of cabling all together in my house is probably in excess of 40 feet (I make that over 12 meters) (ie from the main junction point to the back of my computer there is about 40ft of cabling involved). My broadband package is ?17.99 per month ($35.70) but I'm on a long-term customer discount. The proper price is normally ?20.99 ($41.65). My sister is on the same telephone exchange as myself but a mile away from where I live and her max speed is usually about 3000kbps. She too is on the advertised 8MB package but can never get anywhere near that due to the distance from the telephone exchange. That reading I have, above, is probably one of the best I've had, it's usually about 6000kbps to 6500kbps, although it can drop in peak hours. My upload speed, nearly always between 375kbps to 382kbps, is far too slow but is standard for my ISP.

    Internet Speed

your first connection was to a server in the USA, the second was closer to home. For that speed test to work reliably you have to connect to a server in your area (or on the same continent at least!)
  4. I wonder if this is possible... I'm running XP Every night I back up several files / folders I have on my computer, none of them massive files, mainly things like Microsoft Money file, Works Folder (for things like calendar etc). The files I back up are pretty much a constant and I back them up to a folder in My Documents called Backup which I then backup to a USB Flash Drive. However it's a nuisance having to go around to various parts of my computer to right click and use the Send To feature to back up each of these files (I have a Send To: Backup in that right click dialog box). It only takes a few minutes but I'd like to be able to backup in one go... What I would like is something like a batch file where I could just run that and it would then automatically run a backup of all of the various files and folders I backup. I would like them sent to the Backup folder on the computer and I could then copy that to the flash drive. Is this possible? If it is, how do I create one? Thanks!
  5. I've found an easier way to get around the problems - it's called using XP! Vista is OK (although a pain at times...) but I'll stick to having it on my laptop which I use for little more than the internet and some basic work projects. My PC, on which I do nearly all my work remains happily an XP machine! And works a treat.
  6. This is one of the few times I'll be around here until after the new year, so all the best to everyone - I hope Santa brings you something you like! Merry Christmas I have a feeling my liver will be complaining come January 2nd!
  7. I'm not sure if this has been suggested before, or if the feature is already enabled: Would it be possible to include an option (eg a tick box in Options) to hide / unhide the Preview Pane feature in Recuva? This would be useful if a user wanted to scroll through the list of files whilst viewing all the file details without having to resize the pane to a minimum (ie it would set the view back to how Recuva looked prior to the introduction of the feature). It would make the Comments column easier to view as viewing this column always requires resizing the Preview pane. The default could be set to show the pane, if most people use it. Thanks Robbie
  8. There's two (free) tools that can be used for capturing / resizing images which can then be uploaded to a photo hosting site. Windows Snapshot Maker, also known as WinSnap - to capture the image the latest versions aren't free but version 1.1.10 is still available and is free to use on personal PCs (ie for non-commercial use). it's the last that was free to use. You can use it to capture the entire screen or to capture parts of the screen (eg just an open application such as CCleaner). Images can be saved in a variety of formats including jpeg format. http://filehippo.com/download_winsnap/ the version you need is available on that page ImageResizer - free from Microsoft This can be used to resize the image, to a custom size if needed http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...ppowertoys.mspx scroll down on the page, the download link is on the right hand side. Note to mods: I'm not sure if linking like this is allowed, if not please remove the links. Both links are safe and both applications are PC safe to use.
  9. Glad to hear you got it for the same low price! I'm in Sunderland tomorrow, I'm getting there for 9am to do some Christmas shopping and so I can get back home before the crowds build up - I hate shopping when everywhere is packed...
  10. it looks nice and slim. What colour are you after? If it's black, then have a look at amazon as it's marked down to ?99.99 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NWZA818-Video...4661&sr=1-1
  11. I had this problem about a month ago, I'd guess 1 November (as I'm always up to date with CCleaner it would be whatever version was current on that date). I suddenly was faced with dozens, perhaps well over 100 uninstaller reference issues. Stupidly, as I was distracted, I never saved a backup copy and deleted them all. I then found all the uninstaller information etc had vanished from Add/Remove Programs in Windows. The programs were listed but there was no uninstall option, no date last used, frequency of use etc. I thought it was my computer, but you have had the same problem as me.
  12. Having tried both XP and Vista I much prefer XP - to me it seems more user friendly.
  13. it's awful - of all the countries in the world, Finland is one of the few that I thought would never have this problem. I was shocked to find out that it's the third in the world for gun ownership, based on population.
  14. I've just gone into the display settings for my monitor - if I adjust the colour setting from "9300k for general use" to "6500k for Image management", white colours display as light brown (which is beige). Changing to "sRGB" makes the brown / beige even more pronounced. Changing back to 9300k brings back a blue hue / brighter white colour.
  15. perhaps you need to alter the display settings? (right click desktop - settings - advanced in XP) or perhaps the colour settings of the actual monitor need adjusting? It could be the way the graphics card is mixing the red, green and blue colours. I have a feeling that beige is a composite colour of mixing red and green, so you may need to make some slight adjustments.

    SOAD Tribute

anyway, I think we should be thinking about Caldor - as he's drank his home brew has he survived without getting a hangover?! The home brew can be strong - I hope System Of A Down kept him sensible and sober!

I always thought it was about which song a company could hype the most! I must admit I still follow the charts but with a top three of Leona Lewis, Take That and McFly I sometimes wonder why I bother...

    SOAD Tribute

I've not heard much by them, mainly the singles that made the UK charts. Chop Suey was their only UK top 20 song, though the follow up, Toxicity, went close.
  19. Hi all I've just bought a 19" widescreen LCD monitor which, according to the spec sheet, is WXGA+ 1440 x 900 screen resolution. However, my computer doesn't allow me to set this resolution, the closest I can get to it is either 1280x768 or 1280x1024. The latter makes the display look terrible, the former (1280x768) isn't too bad, though of course it isn't the optimum and therefore I'm not getting the best display I can get. How much difference is there in the ratio between the optimum screen resolution of 1440x900 and my setting of 1280x768? I can live with the display but would prefer to have the optimised resolution. Also, I currently have integrated graphics which is VIA/S3G Unichrome IGP (it may be KM400?). How easy would it be to upgrade to a proper graphics card, to obtain the correct resolution setting, or is that not possible? I'm not that clued up on integrated graphics / graphics cards - I don't even know what one looks like, let alone how to install it! I assume it's not just like a memory card, or is it? The driver is as up to date as it will ever get as VIA appear to have abandoned updates for this driver, the last being in March 2005. Any advice welcome!
  20. I want to buy a laptop but every laptop I see comes shipped with Vista and I still want to use XP. I'm reluctant to pay ?500 ($1000) for something that comes shipped with an operating system I don't want.
  21. if your parents had 55 acres in England I'd be touching my cap and calling them M'am and Sir - that's a large amount of land to have! I have a small garden which is about 10 foot by 6 foot and that's quite enough to be called posh around here
  22. lol! I'd love to visit Canada, I have some relations living there, as well as in Australia and New Zealand! My dad's side of the family are from Scotland, some moved south to England but some emigrated to the far flung corners of the earth...
  23. I learn something new... I didn't know Canada had a Thanksgiving day. What's the historical context for that? I know about the American Thanksgiving, I was taught the reasons for that in school (mainly because it relates to the Pilgrim Fathers) but this is a new one to me EDIT: I just looked it up on Wikipedia. I learn a lot by coming here (and from Wiki!)
  24. and the Romans built Hadrian's Wall to do the much the same and neither really worked! I love Bamburgh Castle, it's to my great shame that I haven't been there since the 1980s, yet it's only just up the road from me, relatively speaking (a mere 50 miles).
