but this should mean that the index.dat files aren't erased beyond recovery, which is what the OP seems (partly) concerned about. My guess is the file is just marked as deleted (not securely deleted) and is lying in free space, meaning it can be recovered.

I've looked around the forums as I remember this question being asked not too long ago, and as usual, I can't find the thread! The answer was something along the lines that Windows XP Add/Delete feature hides certain things that CCleaner lists, and these are things that shouldn't be uninstalled, but beyond that I can't remember the answer, sorry. see this post and the linked post mentioned http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=1110 It may help point you in the right direction. It seems a bit confusing at first but eventually I worked out how to do it, to add cleaning the MRU registry entries for Excel Viewer.

as far as I can see, the Options -> Custom feature is to add any file or folder to be cleaned, not excluded from cleaning. Perhaps I'm missing something?

I switched to FF about 2 years ago, and have never regretted it. Firefox is by far a better browser, more user friendly and safer, as most exploits appear aimed at IE, since it is part of Windows. It has tabbed browsing, meaning you can view more than one website within the browser. It also doesn't have index.dat files in the way IE has. This means they are easily deleted, unlike the index.dat files within IE which take some removing. There are also some cool Themes that can be downloaded, to change the appearance (skin) of FF and the user interface can be personalised in a much better way than IE. It's no coincidence that IE7 looks more like FF, while IE6 looks clunky and old fashioned.

Would you have any idea when IE7 is coming out of beta? It was supposed to be last autumn / fall but is yet to be fully released...

out of interest, what is the Tray Notifications Cache (TNC)? I've always had this unchecked. But the entries in Run do clear after a restart, which I do anyway, for the index.dat files wipes. I don't think the entries in Run clear after a restart if I don't run CC so it's not an automatic MRU purge by the system, and I haven't got the feature in Tweak enabled. Though getting the Recent Programs feature in Start to clear takes clicking "Start" a few times. Is this controlled by the TNC too? What else does this feature clear?

on my computer, the Start -> Run (MRU) box only clears after a restart, and it's not just with CCleaner that this happens: it does it with other cleaning programs that clear MRU lists, such as MRU-Blaster too. I just assumed it was a quirk of the computer. In fact, I'm sure it happened with my previous computer too. I'm sure it's not a problem to be worried about?

I've never checked back for a while, but one of the Windows newsgroups on usenet said that IE7 will only be available for WXP, and perhaps only for SP2 too. I may be wrong, but I'm sure new Windows software like IE7 are only to be made available for WXP operating systems.

I just tried a quick test and CCleaner cleared all my Firefox cookies - I double checked by checking the Cookies file in FF. However, I have a more up-to-date version of CCleaner, ver 1.28.177. That said, there was an issue regarding the cleaning of FF Cookies, but this was meant to be addressed by the version you have: v1.27.260 - [14th February 2006] - Added secure file deletion. - Added Windows HotFix Uninstaller cleaning. - Added optional IE toolbar. - Updated application icon. - Fixed large file size issue. - Fixed Firefox cookie error. Unless you want to update your version of CCleaner, you could just add the FF Cookies file to the Custom Files / Folders option. Other than the CCleaner version and a slightly different FF version (I have 1.5.0.2) our computers have the same set up, WXP Home, single user account. I can only suggest therefore you either upgrade CCleaner or use the Custom option to resolve the problem... My mistake here: I overlooked the part where you said you chose to keep some cookies, and deleted the others. I just retested by visiting a number of sites in my bookmarks, then selectively choosing to keep a number of cookies. CC deleted all the others, and I confirmed this by checking in the FF Cookies file. I then removed a few more cookies, ran CC again and again it worked fine. I then finally chose to delete all cookies and all were gone. Obviously, as you want to keep some cookes, the custom option is probably not an option.

which of course begs the question: why install Google Desktop in the first place if you want to flush sensitive information....
